  • Today we take a look at a new Oncidium type orchid with quite the extensive root system and see how to properly repot it!
    🦋 More info below! 🦋
When receiving a new orchid it's always a great idea to repot it sooner rather than later. Some orchids are just a pain to repot though, especially orchids with extensive root systems!

Rather than saving all the roots, which might not still be in good condition, I like to remove the oldest roots, no matter the state they are when I repot the orchid.

Very good video on the repotting. I don't have experience with orchids (just started), but what you said about beneficial bacteria, that same thing you can find out when you search for bonsai info (already a few years I'm growing bonsai). At first I was affraid, then I actually used for one sick tree a transparent pot, cause I wanted to see the roots and what do you know, the mycorrhiza (some trees really need it to absorb nutrients) appeared in a blink of an eye. In my experience that's what happens with other beneficial bacteria or fungus that you might want with your plant.
And the cutting of dead or dying roots, oh I experienced that with my trees, I used to be affraid and left some roots only to see them rot away and bring so much acid to the media that I either needed to flush it and even raise the pH a bit, or just repot the tree again and cut those roots completely. They just kept rotting away. Now I'm not really affraid with trees, I hope to be able to do that in time with orchids. They're a new beast for me and I'm always too careful and too affraid with new unknown stuff. But your videos really help. Thanks :)

Hi Danny. I'm about to rerepot my oncidium Firefox after repotting twice already. Going thru experimental stage with these guys and seeing they prefer leca. That was my first media then changed to moss thinking perhaps softer and more water retentive. But I have two oncidiums that is doing great in leca, both spiking. And the Firefox was doing better before moss. My two cents hehe. Hope Bendy is back to his sparky spirit. 🤗

I can never get enough of your orchid videos , 😉 I have a miltonia but no bulb, just looks like canes and the spikes with flowers look like a dragons head , not the opsis type flowers. Roots all hanging out the pot everywhere , it’s time to repot, bit worried though as it has lovely flowers at the moment, should I repot anyway.?

Hi Danny, I was gifted an phalaenopsis orchid that my friend had for a long time that overgrew it's pot (4in). It was extremely root bound. I have the biggest plastic vented pot I could find at 8in and I tried to clean up the root system as much as I could but it didn't have many dead roots. It won't fit in the 8in and I can't seem to find anything bigger and I'm not sure what to do. There's still about 1/4 of the orchid roots bulging out the top of the pot.

I'm having difficulty finding information on how to handle orchids that have too many healthy roots to fit back into a pot. Either because they became root bound in the case of several pseudobulb orchids I bought or in the case of a phal, the roots are too long to fit into a proper pot. For the phal, the mother plant had a terminal bloom, but a daughter is going well from the stem. Do you have videos on these issues planned?

As usual, from your video, Danny, I've learned more about my new and enjoyable "addiction" My mini-phals. Even though they are very different from the plant you worked with in this video, the information is of great value. I love learning from your site.
I've just purchased a new mini-phal that is loaded with blossoms and more than 20 buds that are opening one-two a day. Love it but I just discovered the 3rd spike is a "terminal" spike. I need a refresher to understand that issue. I seem to recall that "terminal" spikes mean the plant will not be long lived and when it stops blooming, it will die. Is this correct? I'll be sad.

I have a terminal spike mini one too! I heard some of the mini hybrids are known for that. Not sure if thats true tho!

Hi Danny. All hydrogen peroxide I can find in pharmacies contains some stabilizers and I'm afraid that it can do more harm than help to my orchid. What do you think about it?

How do I figure out what kind of orchids I have? I have one that has ”roots” outside of the medium but the base of them are green but the tips are dried out. Honestly I’m not even sure that they are roots at all.

Hello Danny, the video is very informative. This explains why the medium of big rooted orchids I have repotted becomes bad soon. Especially oncidiums. Please make a video about big rooted vandas from the tiny plastic basket to a wooden basket like repotme. I have a few vandas which are attached to the plastic basket and I don't know whether to remove it and place it in wooden ones if so how best to do it without damaging lots of roots. And will it be harmful to keep it in its plastic basket? Thank you.

Danny, so in your climate you are not using self-watering when you have bark medium? Just checking.

Hi I sure hope u answer this question! I purchased phalenopsis at a store clearances because it was bent over and cracked on the stem where it has 6 blooms on it. Should I cut it off or just clip it up

    • @MissOrchidGirl

Hi, try to straighten the spike, it might still remain green. If the flowers start to wilt cut it and put it on water. Here is a similar situation ua-cam.com/video/59hQomcnODw/v-deo.html
