"The street was nothing before the 1980s. There were just a few insignificant things here and not many people. Then everything changed. Moroccans arrived, businesses opened and the street is now really good. We get lots of tourists from around the world, from every country and of every colour. This place is very important now."

"They moved to this mosque and it was then rented. So the area started to be a sort of Muslim neighbourhood, mainly Spanish. So the first shop it was a tea shop and a bakery, a little bakery."

"The people visit Alhambra OK. So they travel through time, they go back four centuries and then of course when they leave the Alhambra with its decorations. So after that visiting this street they feel themselves like living the Alhambra. With the decorations and the tea shops, and the tea and the music it gives them an atmosphere which is which is continuation of the Alhambra, you can say."

LEAD IN:
The Alhambra, the last stronghold of Islam in Spain, is the most visited attraction in the country.
Lately there has been a sort of second wave of Islam in Granada.
The formerly neglected old part of the city is being redeveloped and it's generating business.
STORYLINE:
The Alhambra is a symbol of southern Spain's Islamic heritage.
These days, modern Muslim Spain can be found in the city of Granada, in a district called the Caldereria Nueva.
The street is full of characteristic shops that make it look just like a north African souq (souk).
But the Caldereria Nueva wasn't always so alive and bustling.
Shop owner Said Elkhlouf explains that it was virtually deserted until north Africans came and injected life into the street in the 1980s.
The regeneration of the district helped boost the housing market and many historic properties are being restored.

In 711 AD. Tarik Ibn Siyad crossed the Strait of Gibraltar with 7,000 men. He and his successors conquered most of Spain and Portugal in 20 years, systematically settling Syrians, Palestinians, Persians, Yemenis, Iraqis, Egyptians and Hejasarabs in the individual districts in order to transform the Iberian Peninsula into an Islamic country.
The Islamic Southern Army under Musa Ibn Nusair with its 18,000 Yemeni and Syrian fighters conquered from 713 AD. Southern France, occupied Narbonne in 720 and Nimes, Arles and Avignon in 721. It stormed up the Rhone Valley, conquered Lyon in 725 and in the same year Langres, Sens and Luxeuil in the Vosges west of Basel.
The Islamic northern army under General Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafiki destroyed Bordeaux in 731, captured Portiers in 732 and was decisively defeated by Charles Martell (714-741 AD) before Tour 732 by the Frankish army.
From 752 to 759 the reconquest of southern France followed, which was completed in 795 by Charlemagne (768-814 AD).!
This finally eliminated the “Islamic ghost” on the Iberian Peninsula! The last MiniBastion Granada occupied by Muslims was 1483 liberated;!

Islam has not returned to Spain and for sure you will never see it. Spanish people eat pork, grow and drink wine, and celebrate all Christian festivities just as they have done for centuries. Muslims are a minority who are immigrants looked upon and I can assure you that they will just remain like that. In any case the natives background is Christian and they are not going to change that just because you say so. LOL.

Well, in 1482 the last Muslim bastion of Granada fell in the Reconquista; Fortunately, Spain was completely liberated from Muslim conquerors again! This meant that Spain, like almost all European states, was able to develop free of ecclesiastical and religious obstacles (the Catholic Church tried to slow it down for years, but at some point this ghost was over too!) Spain was able to develop with democracy, humanism, enlightenment, education , secularism, freedom of the press and developing equality between men and women; all attributes that are still missing in Islamic states today:!
