  • Islam was a social and political force in Spain for over 800 years; 3 times the entire history of the United States. And yet, the impact the Muslims had on Spain and modern Spanish culture is rarely ever acknowledged.
In this episode, I tell you the story of how Islam entered Spain, how the Muslims of that time still have influence on modern Spanish Culture and some possible reasons why Spain's Muslim past is rarely discussed today.

I would say that in Spain we are complete aware of our muslim and Arab influence. And I say more... we are proud of it! If you ask a Spaniard "where it comes Spanish culture from?" MOST probable the answer will be "roman, Gothic, muslim and Christian", no one will skip those 800 centuries. BUT, maybe because christianity became very strong in the next centuries, the rest of the world see us as fanatical catholic. It is the rest of the world who is unaware of this. Not us españoles.

give me a break with the "Dark Ages" myth already.
of course Europe just like any other civilization in human history had a decline at some point.
this happened because of constant wars. there was no time for innovation of scientific progress.
and besides, Europe was not allowed to innovate because of outside influence and oppression from the Arabs and later on the Ottoman Empire.
my country of Romania and any other Balkan Peninsula countries were opreseed and lived in the Dark Ages because of the colonialism and oppression from the Ottoman Empire.

Most of this applies to Portuguese too. As a Brazilian, I know that we have many words in our Brazilian Portuguese that came from Arabic, and I learned more about it from my Lebanese friends here. Beside the names, there are also many surnames in South America that were derived from Arabic, such as the last name of my uncles "Medina", which is an Arabic word that means "The Luminous City", which also refers to one of the most holy Muslim cities in the Arabian Peninsula.

Every country has minor and historically hidden civilisations and peoples. The Arabian peninsular for instance has Kurds, Jews, Chandalians, sand Arabs, Bedouins. But the most influential was the Arab one. It's the one that influences your language the second most, probably after Latin. And the secular scientific scholarship of the Arabs is what elevated Spain way more, with all due respect the Visigoths and the others did.
And simply put, you guys don't respect the Arab culture. You always try and demean it. So although every culture has their place. This video is a channel with a Muslim focus. Just like the Muslim focus is forgotten and neglected in your culture. We like to remember it from this context. And it's not even an exaggeration. @@anneeq008 it's not forgotten, it simply happened a long time ago. The Visigoths gave us some important rules of law though, and before them we had the romans. But yeah, there's more to life than big civilisations and most of the people from Iberia has a very prevalent common Neolithic genetic marker. This means it was more of a cultural exchange than anything else. At the time, the moorish culture were more advanced in many aspects and even brought back certain classical elements from rome. After 1500, forget about it. Iberia was far more advanced than Arabs. How do you think it could be an influence then? Mate, we had the best ships (thank you for the triangular sails though), we were bringing new stuff no one had ever seen, we circumvent the moorish and Venetian control of trade with the east. No chance.

Hello Omar, one last comment. I wouldnt say that the Islamic heritage of Spain is something purposely hidden or unknown. The period and its heritage is not only taught in schools at different levels of educations and to different extents, but its a daily presence in quite a bit of the Spanish geography and daily life. The architectural heritage of a lot of cities, the cooking, as you very well mentioned, a lot of our vocabulary... Some of our biggest touristic places and UNESCO heritage sites are of muslim heritage (Alhambra, Cordoba's mosque-cathedral...). The presence is very much noted.
Undoubtfully, a lot of Spaniards live their daily lifes giving very little or no thought to this topic, their more earthly worries take most of their mental space; but within the more educated elements of Spanish society this is very much something taken into account when talking, thinking, or discussing national matters. Politically speaking this happens to, both the groups that like and value this heritage and those who try to diminish it or deby have to deal with it, its an undeniable fact.
Basically, those 700 years are accepted as fact, as something that is very much part of the Spanish identity, wether there are ideological positions that like it or not.

The Iberian Penisula was not Spain at that time. Spain or what was to become Spain did not exist. The Catholic northern region by Asturias was the genesis of Spain. These people after realizing that the moors were traveling north with the intent to take over large portions of Europe, decided to confront them and eventually defeated them, taking over their vast stronghold, and with it, all that they had built there. This is similar to what happened in the US with the westward expansion and their wars won against Mexico, where lands were taken but cities and towns remain to this day with heavy Mexican/Spanish characteristics, names and architecture.

These are after all historical events.
Now as for your Iranian-Arab example, the same point still stands whether you like it or not, and the implications of the Arab invasion into Iran facilitated the spread of Islam within which affected Iranian history quite dramatically, as I am sure you are aware of, as did the Arab invasions of the Iberian peninsula, again these are historical events and are aparts of both respective histories.

While my grandmother left us with quite a number of her things with many Islamic designs/decorations. I only met her twice when I was a toddler and then she passed. She had many photos of her in Andalucía. I decided to go there in 2018 to visit and Córdoba and Granada as well. It is obvious that there was Islamic influence there and was also told of the history of Al-Andaluz when we went to the former palace. It's not secret at all, it's openly talked about and taught in school. Spanish people generally know about the history and influence. I've been coming to Spain since 2005- that year I read a children's book written by a Spanish author which was about the history or the caliphate, reconquista, and as you say here it mentioned the people living together (though typically taxes were imposed on non-muslims). If you go to Granada it's talked about. When I started learning Spanish in the 90s we were told in class about words beginning with AL as having an Arabic origin. I think that perhaps this video is aimed at Americans, because in Spain the history is obvious.

I am from northern Spain, where Spanish was born and almost no traces of muslim or arabic culture, but celtic roots: traditions, music (pipes), etc.... It is funny to hear you arabs staying in Spain for over 800 centuries. That was like that only in Andalucía, not in the whole Spain. Also, having some specific words does not mean a high influence on the language. Spanish is a latin language with almost the same structure as French or Italian until the point they are mutually intelligible. The words you mention are also in the rest of the languages and are loans form other languages such as: Guitarra, algodón, azúcar (guitar, cotton, sugar,..) ... Toponims as Guadalajara are not reflected in the Spanish language. We don't say wada for water, but Agua (from Latin AQUA) also we have aceituna and aceite, but we have also oliva and óleo. Conquerors were adding some words (specially related with the agriculture and toponims) as they were recovering some lands down to the south but structure of Spanish wasn't touch by Arabic, actually is along with Sardinian and Italian, Spanish is the closest to Latin (you can find some studies) I find the video quite arabic-"biased" and with deep misunderstanding of Spanish culture. Of course there is an influence, specially in southern Spain, but not that big.
I recommend you to watch some videos about Spanish language:
    ua-cam.com/video/opabEN-0ECY/v-deo.html
You can also compare languages in linguistics.eu:
Latin - Spanish: 26,1 These languages are closely related!
Arabic - Spanish: 76,6 A possible remote relatedness between these languages is speculative (p-Value* = 0,049).

Good post. What people don't understand, due to lacking sufficient historical context, is that the Arabs only remained for 800 years in the "already highly civilized" parts of Iberia which were mainly the southern and eastern parts of Iberia. The central, northern and western regions of Iberia were highly underdeveloped and the agriculture mentioned in the video could not be easily brought and started there - the Arabs themselves said those lands were barren and not worth conquering, which is why they never attempted to conquer Asturias. This is never mentioned. The Arabs never saw the value in Iberian lands comprising about the top half of Iberia, which is why it was so quickly conquered back - within one generation from the start of their invasion. So most of Iberia was nowhere near having been controlled by the Arabs for 800 years - not even 50 years for most of the north. The Arabs themselves did not attempt to do that, and they themselves explain the reason why was the worthlessness of the northern Iberian territory.

It can be said that Spain has been *influenced* to (very) various degrees by Muslim culture, but not that Spain has Muslim origins like the video's thumbnail claims. Also, it is very misleading to say that Spain was controlled by Muslims for 8 centuries. It is more accurate to say that some parts of the Iberian Peninsula were Muslim for 8 centuries. Certain parts were never Muslim, and very large parts of the Peninsula were Muslim for much less time than 8 centuries. It should be noted that the Muslims in Iberia were by far mostly converted Hispano-Romans whereas Berbers and Arabs were only a small minority, and also that Iberia was never completely under Muslim control. In 1238, Sultan Ibn al-Ahmar, the founder of the Nasrid dynasty, became a vassal of Fernando III of Castile, and in 1246 Alhamar signed the Pact of Jaén, in which Granada had to pay tribute to Castile in order to maintain its independence. From 1264 onwards, the only Muslim territory in Iberia was Granada, which is smaller than Belgium, and it continued to exist as a vassal of Castile, and therefore cannot be called a "social and political force" since the 1200s.

The Arabs were in some areas of Spain for 7 centuries. A reconquest took place. Because what is Spanish is what is based on Celtiberian and Latin, not what comes from the Arab invasion, which is what comes from outside. The Christian kingdoms recovered their territory, and some time later expelled the Muslims who invaded Spain and Portugal.
The fact that there are words in Castilian/Spanish does not mean anything, there are French words, English words and words from other languages, for example war is a word that comes from Germanic, bellum would be the Latin word. In Spanish genetics, the Arab presence is only 10% of the Spanish lineage. In other words, their contribution is minimal. I have nothing against Arabs, but as a Spaniard I have nothing to do with them, and I know several Arabs, whether Moroccans, Pakistanis or Tunisians, with whom I am culturally unlike.

    www.google.com/search?q=c%C3%B3mo+linkear+una+p%C3%A1gina&gs_ivs=1#tts=0

Spain came and called us Indio because we look like American-Indians with a Islamic faith. North and the middle part of Philippines which known as Luzon and Visayas country lost in battle, only South or the largest Island Mindanao survive and was able to keep Islam.. People often forget the Mediterranean was easier to transverse than land then, if you had the means, meaning if you were rich and clever, you'd go all over around the Mediterranean.

I also have to admit there are many races in modern day Spain and Portugal. You have the Arabic and North African influence from the south. The moment I hear and see Flamenco music there's a close connection with the Arabic music. Then to the north of Spain you the Celtic and Basque peoples that lived there for centuries. Indeed a mix of people.

Having a small period of influence is different from originating in a culture. Your thumbnail is deceiving by saying "Muslim origins of Spanish culture". Instead it should say, the phase of Muslim influence on spain

Your viewpoint seems to contain some misunderstandings:
-It's accurate that the final Sultanate, Granada, existed until 1492, but this does not imply that Islamic rule spanned the entire peninsula. In fact, Islamic dominance started to dissolve even before 1212. Furthermore, recent research corroborates that they were unable to conquer more than half of the Iberian Peninsula. By the time of the Catholic Monarchs, Islamic states were not a significant threat to Christian kingdoms, and Granada, the last Moorish kingdom, was even paying tribute to them.
-Regarding technological advancements, many of the innovations attributed to the Moors, such as canal systems and agricultural methods, were indeed prevalent during the Roman era.
-The influence of a language on another does not necessarily translate into a cultural takeover. The Spanish language may have absorbed numerous Arabic words, but this doesn't make Spain's culture predominantly Islamic. For instance, the incorporation of French words like "jardín" (garden) or "bayoneta" (bayonet) into Spanish does not denote a French identity for Spain.
While the romanticized perception of Islamic influence on Spain exists, it is essential to remember that the bedrock of Spanish culture is primarily rooted in Roman traditions, including Greek philosophy and Christianity.

You are absolutely correct, plus the Arab side is no secret at all and much less "the origin" of Spanish culture.
Also, modern genetic studies have shown there is very little Moore DNA in Spain, which you could say the cultures did not mix that heavily.
Not to discredit the Arab side, but it is overplayed by afrocentrists.

What is left of Islamic influence is indeed pronounced in the light of the extreme efforts done to exterminate anything Islamic. Same effort have been done in the rest of Europe to erase the Islamic origin of the scientific renaissance.
Just because you don't like the Islamic influence and contribution doesn't mean it wasn't there

You do know this has nothing to relate with Indian Muslims .. isn't it ? Though I agree some of the information is good, some imagined for self massaging & some far fetched. No authentic references were cited.. which makes it quite imaginative. Indian Muslims will go & find their relation to totally unrelated people, cultures & societies .. but forget their own original roots & identity. No wonder your situation too will go the pakjstani Muslim way.. slowly, but surely.

I’m Mexican American with a high percentage of Spanish. I know that the Muslims occupied Spain for hundreds of years and that there was Arabic influence. Arabic food is delicious and Arabic architecture is lovely, but honestly I’m very glad that Spain stayed Christian. I needed and obtained (through repentance and faith) true freedom that only comes through Jesus Christ. 🙏☝️
