Idk if you always read these, Caroline... But I can share my own "Street Man" experience. This one time, a few weeks ago... I went out into the rain feeling sort of down, wanting to go buy Groceries. So I did, and me wanting the extra bit of exercise after this errand-- starts walking home. There's one problem: I'm walking home from the store, which is a few blocks away; With a paper shopping bag. It starts pouring rain like a motherfucker. Groeceries are heavy, bag gets wet and starts falling apart at the bottom from the weight of my new items. I grab the thing by the bottom, trying to save my stuff from falling out. Decide to hide under the roof of a bus stop and take the bus the rest of the way.
Here's where it gets unique: usually, there's nobody hanging out in my appartment building lobby except the odd janitor. People tend to walk on by, if they're polite they say hello or make very minimal small talk in the elevator. Not this particular evening, though! This particular evening, there's a guy sitting on the lower end of the staircase in front of the glass door entrance to the building. He's texting, looks up to see a very drenched young woman struggling with getting the door open with all these groceries beginning to fall out of her grocery bag. (Drenched young woman being yours truly.) He speedwalks over to help me by holding the door open, which is unusual behavior for Swedes in Stockholm-- people in the big city aren't usually this helpful or compassionate, so I'm grateful and charmed by the kind act from the get-go. I don't really get a great look at him initially, because I'm kinda focused on the groceries which are plopping onto the ground and I'm busy explaining the situation. He starts backing away as I pull down the hood on my rain jacket, eventually sitting back down on the stairs. I'm saying something along the lines of "This is what I get for picking a paper bag in this weather. Not my finest hour." and he said something similarly chit-chatty like "Yeah, pouring rain and paper don't exactly mix." I thank him, putting my broken bag on the ground. Now that I have a minute to actually get a good look at this man I realize he is extremely good looking, has legs for days, is very kempt but also has a hipster mixed with skateboarder kind of look to him. I looked pretty nice that day too, I'd just curled my hair and my skin was looking pretty clear lol. I ask him if he's cool with looking after my stuff for a few seconds while I go get a bag from my appartment to carry it up to my place in. He says it's fine, in a bit of a hurried way. I barely got to finish my sentence before he replied. I figured he didn't really want to talk, and maybe he was busy when I interrupted him and he had to run open the door for me.
So I go get a dry, non-broken IKEA bag from my place, step out of the elevator down to the stuff. "Looks like it's gonna be an IKEA bag." I say, casually enough that I don't come off like a weirdo. "Thanks again for doing this, you've saved me a lot of trouble." I say. Again, he responds super quickly and is like "Take your time! There's no hurry. I'm just waiting for a friend."
So I get down, without my back fully turned to him in case he wants to keep making small talk. I'm at a loss, "Maybe he was just being polite when he said take your time... He's still on his phone, I don't wanna be rude or bug him..... Stockholmers hate small-talk, wtf do I do? He's not saying anything, but he seems like he doesn't want me to leave quickly... I don't even know what I'd say if I tried talking to him. Uhh..." I recently went through a pretty shitty breakup, too. So I wasn't particularly motivated to start trying to converse with a strange handsome man. I walk back to the elevator with my stuff in complete silence. As I get in, I push the button of my floor and peek back over at him. We are staring each other dead in the eyes, with practically the same confused, calm and intrigued facial expression. It was like looking in a freaking mirror for a sec, and the fact that we assertively held eye contact until the door of the elevator closed was pretty freaking extra. If I ever run into staircase man, I'll be sure to report on it here again as well.
My favorite thing is that you had to DECIDE to run into the storm. You didn’t know you’d be rewarded with that sun moment, but you knew you didn’t want to stay safe/dry because there was more out there waiting for you🥺✨

How you described that "first look" reminds me a lot of the first time my husband and I saw each other. We were both freshmen in college, it was late evening and I was standing under a street lamp talking to my mom. I don't know why I didn't walk and talk, I just stood under a street light talking to her. I looked up and saw someone coming towards me and when the light illuminated his face, our eyes met and we smiled at each other. It wasn't just a polite smile that you give a stranger on the street, it was an "It's been so long old friend!" type of smile, teeth and all. We locked eyes and smiled at each other until he passed me by and as soon as our eyes broke that connection, I looked down and in my head, I asked, "WTF, that was weird" and I started walking to my dorm with my mom still on the phone. I saw him the next day. I was talking to one of my friends and all of a sudden I had that feeling you get when someone is watching you and when I turned around I saw him again. He was far away, but I knew it was him. I told my friend that someone was watching us and he approached the random guy staring at us. And that's how I met my husband.
The rain scene with that song playing you out made me cry hahaha wow storytelling holds power
This whole thing was so perfectly edited and organized, I don't have the words to fully describe how exactly right it was. Like the inclusion of that song at the end? Perfection.
