How awful for family and friends to witness this. My heart breaks for them.
I was a tree climber for 30yrs.
I did 100s of palms. So dangerous.
RIP
I worked in tree trimming for like 2 years. I remeber Lots of climbers won't do overgrown palms. The risk of being crushed by the skirt is to high they said. That and ladders and trees don't mix. That's what I was told.
How did it happen ?
@@DixieNormous9 the video one ?
Climber was under 100s of pounds of dead
Tree frowns and they all gave way at once.
@@PInk77W1 That's terrible
Trash trees
My heart is heavy for the family. A man working an honest living and loses his life. It’s hard to see this and his lifeless body but he looked most peaceful. I hope he didn’t suffer too long.
That explanation by the FD of the skirt falling was really helpful. Never heard of this.
The “ring of death” is when a climbers safety pins him/her, to the tree. I cut a top one time the tree was hollowed and decayed on the back and I didn’t see it till I landed. My Foreman said just cut the top and we’ll get out of here. It was late and on a work order so that’s what I did. I peel cut it and big mistake. I ran on the back and the top did NOT separate like the dozens of tops mostly pines I have done. I stayed connected because it was hollow/decayed and all of a sudden I found myself getting pulled into the tree like wtf? That’s the ring of death. Depending on your gear you can’t get out of it and for sure you can not just unclip from it because your safety is being pulled hard INWARD. To clear the hook you’d have to pull it back and no, you will not. Plus you just un safetied yourself. The ring of death. A palm is a GRASS. He had a lanyard around it big big no no. And the pedals of the fonds collapsed down the stalk pinning him. Had ZERO to do with the fonds. It was the collar inside those fonds that broke loose due to weight and someone shifting it then it collapsed.
Palm trees with overgrown dead fronds are deceptively dangerous. Hundreds of pounds of fronds come crashing down on top of workers crushing them.
Unfortunately, this seems to happen somewhat regularly as I see these palm tree trimmer death stories pop up here on UA-cam.
What a horrific way to go 😥
@@culcune😢😢
I've never even heard of this, though Colorado isn't known for palm trees.
My sympathy to his family
I told that homeowner to hire a professional tree arborist that’s licensed and insured, but no, he’s a cheapskate and hired some clown off the street, just to save a buck.
And as you see, he hired illegals, and they probably will sue, and they just might win.
Prayers to the family of the trimmer. I lost a friend to the same situation.
People don't realize how dangerous the job is... RIP to that hard working man & condolences to his fam.
Your friend was unskilled labor too?

One of the most dangerous jobs there is. I did it a few years ago and after one terrifying incident i quit. RIP Brother 🙏
What happened to cause this? 😢
The palm fronds are not only heavy, but very sharp. How traumatic for all involved.
I had seen something similar happen a year ago.
@@fghyjhkubut you didn't die. Shut up.
and what is the real shame...those Washingtonia palm fronds do this as an act of nature....these fronds regulate the temperature of the palm and the palms requires them to continue to be healthy...they are also a natural home for many wild animals.....waiting for the fronds to naturally drop is the correct procedure...but over zealous humans who have no clue and plant trees in the wrong locations are really to blame....Inappropriate trees planted in inappropriate locations by people who don't know what they are doing...is the true cause.
HOA is usually to blame. My dad fought like hell with the HOA explaining this to them for years. They forced him to cut the dead fronds and the trees ended up getting a mold or something that eventually killed them. He was so upset and was able to make the HOA pay for the removal. I was pretty young so I don't remember all the details but 25 years later now I've seen HOA's actually suggest either not planting them or letting them grow and shed naturally.
A few years ago, a video from OSHA came out showing how these accidents happen and how to avoid them. This is a horrible way tod die.
I've trimmed thousands of palms in Phoenix and Tucson AZ. If there is more than 3 years of growth they can only be trimmed with an aerial lift. That became an industry standard in the 90's. Powerlines are the most dangerous thing with all tree trimming. Specifically with palms the skirt sliding down is second.
So sad. Sending prayers to the friends and family of the injured. 🙏🙏🙏
Great job is always brother. One million thumbs up to your channel. This is the reason why you always call a professional to trim your tree down. Especially a Palm tree or a California Palm tree. They are very dangerous. So always always call the professionals. They have the right gear, the right tools the right equipment to keep them safe. And yes, they are insured in case of any type of accidents like this happened. Our condolences go out to the friends and families. And prayers as well. We also pray to our cameramen to keep them safe from bringing us the best footage in town.
So very sorry for the loss of this young man. My sincere condolences and prayers to his family, friends and love ones. This was an awful tragedy. 😢💔 RIP Sir.🙏🏿✝️🕯🕊🕊
Retired FF. 25 years ago the other shift had same call. When the FF got up to him he was still alive. City tree trimmer was driving by with their specialized truck. Which worked great but he died before they could free him. I’ve heard multiple times of the same call.
Tragic
Someone said at least you are closer to heaven ……
Here is additional info:
And these seemingly innocuous trees can be deadly. Deaths among palm-tree trimmers result from things you might not suspect: suffocation, falling, crushing, and broken necks. Fronds on palm trees can weigh well over a hundred pounds each.
I look at overgrown palms around my work & i can hardly imagine the fronds crushing & suffocating workers. But, i look closer & the trees are so dense that I can understand how it could be possible. prayers for the loved ones
LOL, palm fronds do not weigh over 100 pounds.
I hate palm trees, they're worthless and they drop those stupid fronds. Sad way to go.

@@katjay3125I agree. My 8 14’ trees came with a house. I hate them
How sad. This is the first time I have heard of a tree trimmer dying - crushed by the fronds maybe? Tragic.
Palm Trees claim lots of lives every year. Palm trees are a very hard tree to trim.
This happens way too often, trimming these palms from the bottom the dead fronds can close down on the trimmer which crushes their chest, they cannot move and they quickly suffocate. They should be trimmed from the top of the dead fronds, but that would require expensive equipment. Since there are no safety regulations these deaths will continue to occur. My heartfelt sympathy to all who loved him, may God give you the strength you will need in the days ahead 🕯🙏💐
Yep, typical unskilled, untrained tree trimmers who fancy themselves as "experienced" certified arborists.
@@carlv8168 👍Many probably have no idea how dangerous it is, it's sad.
@@carlv8168My wonder is if he really knew that what he was doing carried the risk of killing him.
@@AccidentallyOnPurpose Some of them know the risk but are willing to roll the dice anyway. Most of these folks are uneducated, illiterate and don't comprehend safety information, even in their own native language. Consequently, they don't heed warnings and place themselves at risk of serious injury and/or death.
There are safety protocols, unfortunately people hire unlicensed unprofessional people to save money. The home owner who hired them should also be held responsible. Sad situation nonetheless
Hearing his wife cry in the background is so heartbreaking how terribly sad for his whole family
What do you want to bet this tree trimming outfit wasn't licensed, bonded or insured.... Any takers? That homeowner is screwed.
You're probably right.
Homeowner’s insurance??
@@InMyPOV2u I don't think it's enough to protect them.
Damn! I wanted to hear that last question.
I am so sorry for your loss. Such a tragedy. Praying for you all...the family and the workers also. 😢🙏🙏
This happens way too often. The arborist union puts out detailed information on the hazards of palm trees. To properly trim these trees requires specialized equipment, which most tree companies don't invest in. Instead, they send a cheap laborer up the tree. The poor bastard needs the money, so he takes the job, resulting in his death. So sad. The guy is just trying to make a living.
If the trimmer is illiterate in even his own native language (which many of them are), the safety information is a total moot point and a waste of time.

Wow you think he enjoyed working on those trash trees?
What the fuxk do you mean
Very sad for his family. I've lost count of how many such incidents I've worked as a firefighter/medic, and had pop-up in my UA-cam feed. The "skirt" of dead fronds makes trimming the trees. The older the tree, the denser and heavier the skirt. Tragic for those who care about the worker and highly dangerous for first responders responsible for the recovery/rescue of the victim.
This would not have happened if the owner hired a certified Arborist and tree trimmer. Or a tree trimmer properly trained in ANSI tree safety procedures while safely working in palms. Rule number one while working in palm trees with skirts is never tie in and prune below the skirt. Always tie in above the skirt and always prune from above...My condolences to the tree trimmers family. Very sad....
Mexicans have taken advantage of people wanting to save a few bucks. Thus the black market labor that thrives in California.
How did this accident happen?
@@melz6019 If you listen at the end, the fire captain who was interviewed explained it, and spoke in general as this occurs quite often.
@mikeollman3550 the other thing being S. California is the liability aspect. Homeowners who hire unlicensed people or even companies (who may lie about having the proper license) can be sued by the family of the unlicensed decedent. I guess if one has good property insurance, that will pay off the settlement, but why have to go through that hassle, not to mention the fact that someone literally died on your property trimming trees.
Certified or not that doesn't mean they are immune. There have been plenty of qualified and certified trimmers that have suffered these accidents.
Great law suit against the people that tried to save $400 by hiring an unlicensed illegal tree trimmer..hope they have $2 million dollars in their property insurance..😂😂😂
illegal tree trimmer? I did not see anything about an "Illegal tree trimmer."
@@I_am_smilingQuit pretending, you know damn well this is the situation. Let me guess, you also believe he has OSHA certification too?

All companies use secondary contractors too, plus will have a hard time winning if sign up for it and doing the job.

Why are there no machines or equipment they can use to trim those trees?
Oh there is…it’s all about $$$😢
Most of the time, it's about access. You can't drive a 26,000 lb boom truck over a skinny sidewalk, driveway, lawn, or landscape without very serious and involved planning and infrastructure. Couple that with a client that doesn't or won't pay more than a couple hundred bucks for the job and you have a problem. There's always some tree guy out there willing to do the job for cheap. I walked away from so many palm bids in my 30 years of doing this just for this reason.
Having equipment in yard can be damaging to your landscape and costly. I have 2 50 ft palms in back yard and after seeing how a lift destroyed my yard a request a climber. With that being said I have it done yearly so it doesn't become dangerous!
Aww bless him. How awful for him, his family, the homeowner/tenant and the emergency services. You just never know when the end may come.

Most contractors be knocking on doors
This comment is NOT in any way meant to insult the workers. It's meant to point out to those who think that a cheaper tree trimmer is the same as any other. The cost involved in doing these jobs SAFELY is reflected in the cost to the customers. This job should be done from a lift or bucket truck using a powered pole saw. The equipment is not cheap, the insurance isn't cheap. But using cheap labor can be costly. In this case, it cost a man his life, cost his family a family member. And it will likely cost the homeowners more in legal fees than what an "expensive" professional would've cost. Injury and wrongful death attorneys will be reaching out to his family for sure.

you said fuck no and they said get the fuck outta here.
How does a person die doing this? I’m confused 🤔. Don’t you tie the tree to the way it will swing away from you, as you cut down the tree?
He wasn’t cutting down the tree, he was cutting the palm fronds. Others have commented that the person doing the trimming should be above the fronds, not below. The dead fronds are very heavy and if the tree trimmer is below them and they fall the person will be crushed or possibly suffocate.
Wow
Those dead palm fronds can weigh as much as a small car
Ive seen another vid that same thing happened trimming palm trees must be dangerous
Lots of weight builds up with dead palm fronds. There are licensed companies who do this, which makes me think there are correct ways to do this, not to mention homeowners are put at risk for lawsuits when they hire unlicensed contractors who die while on the property in accidents while doing work.
