This is why I love good animation so much. The animated intro was so beautiful- just vibrant and hopeful and visually stunning. And, of course the Nacelle Sucker! And the Koala!
It's funny to think that both of these openings are technically animated. Also, funny enough, the 2D version of the Enteprise matches the color palette of the TOS Enterprise, incidentlly. Either way, I love both.
This is just another reminder that a lot of modern "serious" live action filmmaking has become so allergic to lights and vibrant color for some reason, to its detriment. The SNW _Enterprise_ looks even better when allowed to show off her resplendent white-colored hull and non-desaturated deflector dish, while still having the dramatic playing of shadows.
Not just that, the backgrounds in the animated sequences were more vibrant than the CGI version. Several of the scenes looked much better with the vibrant colors and the increased brightness.
Agreed! And it’s not only how dark it is but there’s too much contrast in the aztec hull plating for my taste. It distracts from the beauty of the lines of the ship. The refit from the movies got it just right. It was noticeable but subtle.
I get a desire for a more "realistic" take on sci-fi shows, which is why I appreciate that SNW is using the ships themselves to give us the beautiful colors and brightness needed. Granted some phenomena can be just as bright and vibrant, quite bombastic even. But let nature be natural and give me the bright optimism that's been sorely missing.
@@Anansi1701 Exactly. And I even think that the dark/gritty doesn't even scream realism. To me, the flatter lighting and brighter hull is more realistic. That's why to me Star Trek has always looked more 'real' than Star Wars' super dirty greebly ships full of random stuff stuck to the side. Clean lines, bright greys and silvers, and the ship being shown off in full light. That's how trek should look.
Gotta hand it to Titmouse - they've constantly improved their animation with each season of Lower Decks, and this was no exception! What a great take on the SNW opening credits!
now if only we could see the other series done in this style... TNG would be... alright, Voyager would be amazing... i honestly would love to see how they would do a Cartoonish take on Enterprise
I love that they even paid attention to scale when they added the creature. Cerritos is a pretty big ship, things 535 meters long and 240 wide. For reference a galaxy class is only 106 meters longer and 233 wider
Love the animated intro. You actually get to see the detail in the ship and everything else. Nacelle Sucker and Koala were such amazing little touches.
The animated opening title sequence was simply gorgeous, and there were a few scenes where I cracked up. Did anyone else notice that as the Enterprise went past those flaming rocks, the Nacelle Sucker was set on fire, and after the Enterprise reached Starbase One, the bug decided to go somewhere else, because that ride aboard the Enterprise was a bit much, even for them.
The white looks nice and clean and stands out better against space. Since Lower Decks uses CGI for vehicles I guess they just loaded an alt skin fiddled with some details (like adding the creature leaching on the nacelle) & re-rendered it. that would have had to have all been done by hand some decades ago so yeah that it doesn't look quite so CGI as Cell style is kinda amusing as it looks very Videogamey in it's original form. and it doesn't in cell style so yeah I like the animated one better for that reason.
I was wondering: "Did this title sequence ALWAYS look this animated?" Then I saw the big space slug thing hitching a ride and I got what they were doing. I'm a bit slow sometimes...
I'm glad animation is working its way into Trek more and more. The old animated show was my introduction to the franchise, and I've been hungering for that kind of look for a long time 😊
I'm glad to see enough differences in the shots to tell that they didn't just run the original through some kind of filter. Somebody took some real time on that.
Comparing the two really shows how dark the regular shots are. Someone needs to turn up the brightness a touch for S3 of SNW, whenever that happens with the strikes going on.
The amount of detail on the animated opening is so nice. This episode really did feel like a quiet admittance that Lower Decks is the current best-Trek haha
I think i prefer how the ship looks in the animated version tbh, i really like that grey and think its a bit too dark in live action. Lines up better with the ship as seen in TOS as well
You're not alone there, the animated Enterprise looks absolutely stunning since you can see her against the backdrop of space much more clearly than in the live-action show, as well as making the reds and blues 'pop' in a way the black hull simply lacks. Starfleet can do dark vessels, but you want to be able to see your hero ship against everything, and white is a fantastic pick for that. As well as just being more pleasant upon the eyes it shows scars much more readily, making it more immediately evident where the ship has been hit if brought intoa fight
Yeah the actual redesign of the Enterprise looks mostly great (save for the Kelvin style viewscreen and cut-out part of the saucer section where the registry is IMO) but god damn does the hull texture really drag it down. Should've gone for something like this or do the Aztec plate style of hull from TMP
The animated version looks great, and added bonus it has the classic matte paint that live action Star Trek seems to have forgotten the ships used to have.
@@maazkalim Oh for sure they didn't have a choice, a reflective paint would have shown very poorly on the television sets at the time. However just because they were forced to make that choice does not mean it's not the right choice even now, at least in my opinion.

I know why the Animated Enterprise seems to look better than the Realistic looking one - The hull plating looks more whole because the contrast is lower.
The object movement and timing often looks identical. Both are 3D rendered, so I wonder if the Lower Decks team had access to the original files from SNW. They could have reskinned SNW to make it look more cartoony.
“reskinned” as in.. Applying a filter with suitable color-grading? *P.S.* And that goes without saying that credits are more markedly differentiated in their order and appearance are altered.. Owing to the additional credits which had to be added for for this episode.
I think this is one of my favourite ST episodes of all time. Not because the story was necessarily brilliant - it was pretty good but not incredible. But because the concept was so clever and it was executed in such a fantastic fashion. THIS is what Star Trek is about. Not Discovery trying to save the whole galaxy. AGAIN.
For the most part, it basically just looks like re-rendered the same thing, with the parameters they use to render Lower Decks instead of something to look Live Action. It's almost exactly a 1:1, with the addition of the nacelle slug and Koala constellation.
The REAL question is: What DOESN'T he know? (...besides how to ascend to a higher plane of existence without MIND-NUMBING, EXCRUCIATING AGONY, of course!)

It's canon now
It was always canon. Lower Decks is a genuine Star Trek Show. Whatever happens there is canon.

They didn’t have to do this, but they did. Having animated SNW elements just shows they were committed to this concept from the bottom of the heart.
At first I was unsure about both shows. But this has felt more like trek than discovery or the first two season of Picard.
