Even when Adam didn't quite know what he was doing in the early years, he and Larry sounded fantastic as a rhythm section. I just love An Cat Dubh from Boy.
Completely agree. I feel like as time went on his contribution became progressively less pronounced. But it’s not because of a lack of skill or drive. If I had to guess, I would chalk some of that up to his personality. He seems to be significantly more passive than Bono, Larry, and Edge. But to me, as much as Edge and Bono occupy the spotlight for the most part, the rhythm section of Larry and Adam is the most consistently identifiable aspect of the band since Boy.
The pure emotion in Bono's voice combined with the musical layers building and building from the rest of the band, just leave you speechless. I feel it is about seeing a person or loved one falling deeper and deeper into addiction and wanting to help but beyond help. The lyrics are so passionate. Desperation, dislocation, separation, condemnation, revelation in temptation, isolation, desolation. So sad but beautiful at the same time.
Agreed. Before his voice was fried in the early 00s, there were very few vocalists in the history of rock who could touch him. Some of it comes down to preference, but personally I would put him up against any rock vocalist not named Freddie Mercury or Robert Plant. He was that good. He could emote vocally to the point it almost becomes physical. The album version of Bad is the best example of it.
When this broke when I was in highschool. This was my favorite record. We had never experienced anything so deep and atmospheric. If you get a chance listen to Bad Live on Wide Awake in America. It transcends you to another dimension...No Cap.
This song, is about a friend of the band, who was a Heroin addict. Yes, a few others have noted there are some epic live versions of this song. U2 got to working with Brian Eno, a musician who was in Roxy Music, who then amid his own music, Produced for David Bowie, Talking Heads and other. A co-producer of this album, Daniel Lanois would do some great production with Bob Dylan. (All music is connected) 🎸
Oooohhh man! I absolutely love this album! And this track is exceptional. The song just seems to keep building, and building… The drums intensify, Bono lets fly on the vocals. This song absolutely was FIREEEE live - you must check it out. Thanks for this.
Although the song is said to be inspired by heroin addict, the writing of the lyrics is so impressionistic that can be read as a prayer for spiritual cleasing. In fact the whole "Unforgettable Fire" album is a moody and introspective stop of U2 before they conquered the world with performance in Live Aid and the album "Joshua Tree", the biggest hit from it was "Pride (In the Name of Love)", also with deep cuts like "A Sort of Homecoming", "Wire", the title track and "Elvis Presley and America".
This guitar define a new era in terms of "Atmospherics " I honestly don't know why didn't get a "single " it's clear that this song went cross anyway towards "the media "...
Thank you for reacting to this one! So many people only react to U2’s biggest hits, which are honestly not always their best songs. This is definitely a gem!!
For many Diehard fans this is the Best song U2 have ever written but you have to react to the Live Version they done at Wembley stadium in 1985 at the " Live Aid " concert
You are the first person I know to react to the album version of this song. Great reaction! I first heard this song live then bought the album afterwards. The live versions are amazing too. I recommend listening to 80s live versions.
As previously mentioned, This song at Live Aid on 13/07/1985 for me was one of the subliminal moments in live music, hardly anyone had heard BAD except for hard core fans, Bono in the moment stretched it out so much so that I will follow, one of there biggest hits at that time couldn't be played , it was pure genius and possibly/probably made the band legends
U2 has been my favorite band since I first heard them back in 1982. They have been an incredible band for over 4 decades and are one of the best live bands you’ll ever see
this song is a journey man, 30 years ago I discovered this journey and in 2023 I just discovered it with you again, thru your ears! Thanks dude! subscribed!
Storytelling, poetry, and music were things that could not be taken from the Irish no matter what else was taken away. They will forever excel at being a storytelling people.
The *LIVE AID* performance was iconic, what happened during the performance almost broke up the band (read about it after you watch the performance) but it was something that you'll always remember after seeing it ( in a good way). Looking forward to your reaction.
Love how Bono gives it his all! Go back to their beginnings, the "War" album is my favorite, and "Two Hearts Beat As One" is my favorite song. I've been going to their concerts since 1983. On the War album, Sunday, Bloody Sunday is all about the strife on Ireland. They used to parade a white flag to the front of the stage and had the crowd chanting "NO WAR!" It is very touching, emotionally powerful
There are so many live performances of this song, it's not possible to pick the best, but for the best official audio recording, the Wide Awake In America would be best. The video for that particular track is edited from several concert performances.
U2 are one of my favorite bands with a very deep catalog. Suggestions: Every Breaking Wave (don't do the video, it's cut up and distracting), Ultraviolet, Pride (In the Name of Love), Zoo Station, Vertigo, Night and Day (from the Cole Porter tribute album, a dancefloor banger), Angel of Harlem, The Fly, Mysterious Ways, One, there are so many, but that can get you started!
I loved that these older U2 songs were barely kept from flying off the rails, but were so damned good as a whole. Like this song is a mess, but it is just so lovely. U2 couldn't sit down and imagine something like this today, IMO, because they have been stuck on this idea of writing "good songs" instead of just writing songs.
Please make Bad Live Aid 1985, ideally the whole 15' performance with Sunday, Blood Sunday, unique and totally passionate. You'll be totally surprised by what happens to the audience. Addendum: U2 had their first brilliant performance in the legendary Red Rock Amphietheater near Chicago in 1983, which made rock fans all over the world sit up and take notice of U2. Sunday Bloody Sunday (first US rock radio hit), New Year's Day (UK top 10), Out Of Control, Electric Co, I Threw A Brick Through A Window are just some of the highlights of this epic energetic concert.
Yes, of course, I didn't think much about it, unfortunately I've never been to Colorado before, in this unique landscape. The story about the concert (it took place because of the weather situation) was very special. In the UK, U2 already had a top ten single NYD and the album War reached number 1. After the media reports about Red Rocks, U2 became an attraction at the Loreley Festival, which was broadcast by German Rockpalast TV in Central Europe. After that, U2 was also known to all rock fans. Have fun with good music!!!@@kferro
My favorite U2 song saw an interview with bono and the edge one time where Bono said this was one of his least favorite songs to perform because they always changed it and The Edge was like that is why it is one of my favorites. Bono said he never felt it was done.
Also, You need to eventually listen to "The Joshua Tree" then "Achtung Baby" then "Zooropa" over time. It's pretty amazing how they're not afraid to try new stuff. Don't listen to them all on the same day or you will get U2'd out lol
The UK are always miles ahead of North America musically. U2 are bigger than themselves and always put on absolutely phenomenal live shows. Next to Dire Straits they are my favourite band. Check out Bad Live Aid. Epic.
Thought the most famous live performance of this song is the Live-Aid one , to me the best version is the one on "Wide Awake in America", but I keep going back to the original studio version.
Please do Where the Streets Have No Name from The Joshua Tree for more of that gorgeous chimy guitar. Or Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, for the most lush, beautiful song that begins with the nastiest fuzz-tone guitar. Or One, also from Achtung Baby. They are currently performing Achtung Baby at the Sphere in Las Vegas. Look for some of the videos posted on YT.
For some super good bass, check out An Cat Dubh. It's from their first album, Boy, and a deep cut. I love U2 and it's one of my favorites. Other deep cuts that are great are the last three from their early 90s album Achtung Baby: Acrobat, Ultraviolet, or Love Is Blindness. Actually, every song from that album are all amazing. The Edge does one of his only solos in Love Is Blindness. Go for a live version, preferably from ZooTV for Achtung Baby songs. Well, for all U2 songs going forward. The whole album was a compete reinvention for them, and so so good. That album had some really good lyrics. The band were considering breaking up and they'd been together since high school. It was pretty serious. During Love Is Blindness, The Edge, who normally has a very light touch on the strings broke a few strings playing it. He was going through a divorce at the time, as well as the band having their issues. Oh, yeah, their drummer is the youngest member of the band and actually started it when he was 14 by putting an ad up at school. Once all members were determined, they rehearsed in his kitchen. lol! Larry Mullins, Jr. was a machine on the drums. He was still 17 when their first album was released in 1980. Again, always do live for U2 if at all possible!
Ya Shawn that Bad live dips into Stones and Lou Reed tributes. Amazing....other ones to hit first could include Where the Streets Have No Name, New Years Day or I Will Follow.
Ireland in 1984 the year The Unforgettable Fire was released. I was 17 and the country was in a bad state. Dublin was in the middle of a heroin epidemic. Roll it forward to 2023 and despite the economic miracles in the intervening period it's debatable whether things have improved.
I think things had improved during the earlier 2000s when I last was there, but it does seem rougher today...but then again, so does much of the world..
Desgarradora y epica canción de estudio pero la versión en vivo es otra cosa porque es la versión final. Wide awake in America y Rattle and Hum las mejores versiones en vivo. 😎🤘🏻
This song displays Adam Clayton's best work on the bass guitar. It's just fantastic.
Adam is the jazzman & backbone to U2. His humility is unmatched and is such an underrated bass player.
The pure emotion in Bono's voice combined with the musical layers building and building from the rest of the band, just leave you speechless. I feel it is about seeing a person or loved one falling deeper and deeper into addiction and wanting to help but beyond help. The lyrics are so passionate. The Edge builds his guitars and the sounds almost make you cry it’s so beautiful
The 1985 Live Aid version of this was so electrifying. The Rattle and Hum version of this has to be right behind it. Great insight and reaction 👏
It's one of the best U2 songs. Hell, it's one of the best songs.
Great song. I’ve seen U2 a bunch of times live. A favorite band my first show was 1987
Love this song and their performance of this at live aid is just epic.
This song always rips my heart out…
The lyrics are so poignant and meaningful that I get immersed in this song every time. One of my all-time favorite songs by any artist.
When this broke when I was in highschool. This was my favorite record. We had never experienced anything so deep and atmospheric. If you get a chance listen to Bad Live on Wide Awake in America. It transcends you to another dimension...No Cap.

"Its so busy, yet so light."
Yes sir. Great observation.
The unforgettable fire album began their journey to become the biggest band in the world .
Legends.. they don’t make bands like this anymore. Go Spurs!!
Adam owns this song
You have to see this live, unbelievable live. Especially the Live Aid version. It took U2 to a whole new level
Great review

Yes...Live Aid Performance... MUST SEE!
My favorite song by this band! It draws you in and the emotion is so pure!
One of my favorite songs. The Live Birmingham version is great

The marching band snare drum is so simple, but so moving.. I almost wanna bust out my tuba..
One of the best U2 songs
This is one of my favorite albums… incredible from start to finish, every song is amazing.
I loved Elvis presley and America....
Their beautiful song about addiction is Running To Stand Still
Edge has such a unique and distinct tone. Clayton's bass is sublime. Mullen Jr. holds the beat with perfect fills. And Bono has some serious pipes.
If not for a reaction then for yourself, watch/react to BAD (live from Rattle And Hum). Very emotional performance.
There are so many live performances of this song, it's not possible to pick the best, but for the best official audio recording, the Wide Awake In America would be best. The video for that particular track is edited from several concert performances.

in about a month 'New Year's Day" !
Oh Yeah, New Year's Day is so so good, I'm sorry I left that one out!@@dundundata7603
The live version from Rattle and Hum will leave you speechless. Get in that rabbit hole
I loved that these older U2 songs were barely kept from flying off the rails, but were so damned good as a whole. Like this song is a mess, but it is just so lovely. Maybe a typo, but Red Rocks is in Colorado, not near Chicago.
Yes, of course, I didn't think much about it, unfortunately I've never been to Colorado before, in this unique landscape. I love how the song builds
Best Band ever!!!
agreed
This is their best song.
Wide awaaaaake!!!!!!
One of those songs that is 147% better live.
I disagree...the original track to me is better...but I like the live version also...
My favorite U2 song saw an interview with bono and the edge one time where Bono said this was one of his least favorite songs to perform because they always changed it and The Edge was like that is why it is one of my favorites. Bono said he never felt it was done.
Bad is the best of song of U2 80´s !
My fave. 😍😍😍

Religious experience live in the tour in 84 and 85
Great track.
A sort of homecoming
Check out their song "One". ❤
Thought the most famous live performance of this song is the Live-Aid one , to me the best version is the one on "Wide Awake in America", but I keep going back to the original studio version.
Check this out at Live Aid…possibly one of the greatest live performances of all time
The live Dortmund version is the best I think. Watch it!

danke für u2
Maybe my fav U2 word games!
Depois você confere a versão ao vivo no Live Aid ! Épico!!!
Ya Shawn that Bad live dips into Stones and Lou Reed tributes. Amazing....other ones to hit first could include Where the Streets Have No Name, New Years Day or I Will Follow.
One of my favorite albums, so much good U2. Check out War and Joshua Tree albums as well.
Running To Stand Still you must check out!
The Wide Awake In America is the quintessential version.
Another great song and performance by Bono on addition is running to stand still. Do the live zoo tv video from Australia
Ireland in 1984 the year The Unforgettable Fire was released. I was 17 and the country was in a bad state. Dublin was in the middle of a heroin epidemic. Roll it forward to 2023 and despite the economic miracles in the intervening period it's debatable whether things have improved.

Would agree. The much heralded "Celtic tiger" years. Those days are long gone.
Un himno.
Great song, "Bad Live" was even a better version.
ich danke dir.....
Desgarradora y epica canción de estudio pero la versión en vivo es otra cosa porque es la versión final. Wide awake in America y Rattle and Hum las mejores versiones en vivo. 😎🤘🏻
Wubba Lubba Dub Dub!! (Is that a cry for help?)
Do yourself a favour: check out the live version from Dortmund in 1984.
Please react to Live Aid concert performance, second best performance next to Queen's iconic set.
🥰🥰🥰
You missed an opportunity not checking this out from Live Aid. 😓
Is it Zappa time again
👍😄👍👍😄
This song is about (hard) drugs, and losing friends to it.
bono?
Live version is better
du redest aber gerne.
