Low food prices are a consequence of low incomes of Russian citizens. The average salary in Moscow for service workers is 30,000 rubles. This is 400 USD. For office workers-from 50,000 to 70,000 rubles. This is 600-1000 USD. In the provinces, people earn much less. A salary of 15,000 rubles - 200 USD is considered the most common. And 15,000 rubles is the size of the pension for the elderly throughout the country. At the same time, there is a very high percentage of shadow unemployment. Because of the epidemic, many companies have laid off workers without pay. The sphere of cafes and restaurants still can not come to its senses. Many small companies went bust and closed down, too. For the remaining employees, employers reduced their salaries... It's not as good as it looks. The assortment in stores is not an indicator of well-being.

To see the prices gives me a better understanding of my wife. she always thought that everything in Denmark is expensive, even the discount products that the Danes thought were cheap. The same is also when she is in the stores in Russia that then it can take 4-6 hours for her before she is home again. In Denmark, we have a discount store on every street corner, so the distance is small. In Denmark, we also have Kefir, which you mention in your video. I think many countries have opened their eyes to the positive effects of eating kefir. It originates from the Caucasus, and is thought to be linked to the longevity of the people. This is the first of your videos that I've seen. But will definitely see more as I am interested in seeing what life in Russia is like. Seemed like it's exciting to see and compare culture differences. Then we must not forget that Russia has probably the best food in the world. Wow! I went to Russia way back in early 1990's about 5 years after the Change and Russian supermarkets were such sad places... Nice to see what they look like 25 years on...
This looks just as good if not better than what I find in Australia.....and Svetlana was a very pleasant guide thru the supermarket....not just her looks, but her calming demeanor. There must be something in the air in Siberia.
I don't know how I came across this video but I found it so interesting!! It all looked pretty normal and similar to the supermarkets we have here in England until I saw the fish and crayfish in the tanks! To me that is very bizarre as you do not get that in our supermarkets!
It's cool how just looking around a supermarket at the products and prices you can get such a good view of the place where the supermarket is. This is so similar to any of the bigger supermarkets in the cities here in Australia, so many common products for example the Garnier Fructus hair products you like, we have the same product range here and it is also a popular and good quality brand here. The bins where you bag, weigh, and stick on the price label yourself are the same here, the fresh precooked meats and meals, the trolleys that take and give back a coin to unlock, even the general look and layout is the same.
Most of the prices seem to be very low in relation to Western standards. But in order to assess that, it would be interesting to know what an average income in St. Petersburg is and how much fixed costs like rent etc. are.
Average salary in St. Petersburg is around 65k rub (900-1k$) after all taxes. As for the rent you're gona pay, it varies greatly. I think the average for a small flat will be around 30k (400-450$) including electricity, water, internet, etc. And if you live in your own flat it's gona be ~3 times cheaper. Overall, the average purchasing potency ofa single person (basically, how much stuff you're able to purchase after all the mandatory expenses) is still lower than in reacher European countries like Germany or Netherlands. Not dramatically tho. But the boon is that medicine is much cheaper - even if you completely forego "free" medicine (which ain't really free but is included in salary taxes), schools are almost free, kindergartens are free, almost half of university places are free if you pass exams above average, etc. I'd say the average quality of life somewhat evens out with the average European quality of life staying below the leaders in this field. Oh, btw if you like nature and travelling - there's no other place with such variety. Gotta go long distances tho.
Btw, statysticslly speaking, >80% of Russians earn their own place to live - be it a flat or a house. Around 40% earn multiples. Mostly a flat + dacha (a house on the outskirts of town closer to nature) and/or another flat.
@@kooaeisurname8332 absolutly not true! In the netherlands u can only dream to rent an appartament with 1 montly wage. The purchasing power in northen european countries are wayyyy lower , all the young people rent a bed and toilet with 1 wage. Only south europe and russia have decent purchasing power. And gwrmany of course. Forget london Amsterdam, oslo etc.

Haha, dude, the salaries are much much lower if converted to US Dollars. How do you like $200 dollars per month in a regular town in the middle of Russia? Prices for many products are pretty much the same with the U.S. though
But don't forget that a dollar is really expensive here. For example, I earn twice more nowadays than 10 years ago. But if I convert it to dollars, I earn even less than 10 years ago! My salary raised in rubles and went down in dollars.

Supermarkets... too boring.. In Mother Russia we have Hypermarkets everywhere :D These are giant shopping malls that include supermarkets, restaurants, boutiques, food-courts, cinemas, bowling etc.. Small "commercial cities" with 3-5+ floors
I was really amazed by those prices. I live in Moldova, the poorest country in Europe, and our prices are at least 20% higher than that in the cheapest supermarkets. Not even talking about the taxi, only the starting cost is twice the amount they payed for the ride, and each kilometer adds to the price.
Little late to your channel, but simply fascinating. Thank you for sharing this with us. Now I will share something: yes, those razors are very expensive, even here in USA. After you use it, dry it off and then store it in a small jar or cup of mineral oil or baby oil. Water and humidity is what dulls the razor by rust. Keeping them in mineral oil repels water and makes them last 2 to 3 times longer
Nice to meet you. I am Japanese living in Japan, but I have an acquaintance with a Russian woman. She is from Belgorod and is a qualified cook. She cooks me Russian food. In the video, pelmeni appeared in the frozen food section, and Viniglet and Olivier appeared in the side dish section. I also eat it, but it's delicious. Since Viniglet is a beet, it is a good dish for the body. You got cottage cheese, sour cream and greetica. Sometimes I go to the supermarket with her and buy it. But I don't think the product lineup is very good in Japan. I was surprised that caviar came out and I could buy it for about $ 1. The price is higher in Japan.

Love when my wife makes borsch and other traditional dishes.
I have learned a little Russian, but still practice.
Even your music is beautiful and poetic.
I listen every day to Polina Gagarina and her song "disarmed".
Merry Christmas probably the best grocery store tour ever made...
Thanks😊
St. Petersburg is nowhere near Siberia
@@roysokolowski7234 I think she is from Siberia, I could be wrong, maybe she was visiting in one of her videos
I don't know how I came across this video but I found it so interesting!! It all looked pretty normal and similar to the supermarkets we have here in England until I saw the fish and crayfish in the tanks! To me that is very bizarre as you do not get that in our supermarkets!
In seafood shop we have it.
*Thank you!* prices are amazing and the food looks really high-quality, so informative! 😁👍
My bloodline would never allow me to pass the baked goods section. It’s beyond my control.
ln the USA the taxi driver would charge more than $1.15 just to wave and say hello as he drove past you.
i laughed so much at this
What do you expect for a $1.15.
Never compare Russia Vs America (Diffrent Ball Game). Russia went from developed to Developing..
Wonderful tour, very interesting! Now I want to go to Russia!
В России у 80% жителей есть собственное жильё, где плата за свет, воду и тепло и обслуживание не более 100$ за маленькую квартиру.
Great variety. Great presentation of the products. Great prices.
We've always shopped at Diksi, but this one looks great, too! Loved St Petersburg! Best regards ☺️
If i could shop in a store & hear that awesome little jingle everytime i was in there shopping, i would never leave!
Two years ago I spent a couple weeks in Domodedovo. Fell in love with the place. One of my favorite things to do was visit the Lenta supermarket. Simply amazing. Also, the Dixi stores. There were a couple other markets I liked but Lenta was my favorite. I still keep the card in my wallet.
Too bad the Covid thing keeps me from going back.
I really loved the fact about the difference between the prices and those groceries from your country compares to my country. Very helpful to see. Thanks 👍

Very interesting video. Love the store, great variety and your prices are much cheaper than Canada. I would like to visit Russia some day. Cheers
So very, very different from when I lived in Moscow as a student in 1994!
That would be interesting to hear about. What is the biggest change in terms of shopping?
The overwhelming majority of Russian cities changed from 1994
This looks like a really nice store, and the prices are very low when converted to US Dollars.
Incomes are much lower too.
Haha, dude, the salaries are much much lower if converted to US Dollars. How do you like $200 dollars per month in a regular town in the middle of Russia? Prices for many products are pretty much the same with the U.S. though
@@robertd9850 ppl always forget that part.
But don't forget that a dollar is really expensive here. For example, I earn twice more nowadays than 10 years ago. But if I convert it to dollars, I earn even less than 10 years ago! My salary raised in rubles and went down in dollars.
Much more variety than stop n shop
This Russian supermarket tour is a stress reliever. I like the dollar conversions. Looking forward for your future vlog, like Russian shoe stores, hardware stores, appliances stores, etc.. Watching from the Philippines.
Wow, things have really changed since I was there in 1987. That store looked like a Costco.
Great video ..everything is stocked and clean..love the tour guide lol..everyone should watch this and see how we in the US are being lied to..thank you for sharing your awesome
That was a great grocery store. You could be a movie star. Just found your channel. Thanks for posting.
I have been to Saint Petersburg and that particular store. It is similiar to Metro stores in Turkey. although I know there are also Metro store in Russia. Russain people are generally nice and friendly.
I had no idea Russia was so similar to the states. I swear America wants us to believe it's worse than it is. I was clueless about everything until seeing your video.
You should watch more videos, walking in Moscow, St Peterburg, Novosibirsk, Metro in Moscow, AMAZING SIBERIA - RUSSIA, etc, etc

We call them Super Centers. Like our Walmart's. They have everything in one store.
It’s got nicer things too with a greater selection of everything.
We call them Super-Markets

Supermarkets... too boring.. In Mother Russia we have Hypermarkets everywhere :D
These are giant shopping malls that include supermarkets, restaurants, boutiques, food-courts, cinemas, bowling etc..
Small "commercial cities" with 3-5+ floors
From USA love learning about other countries
I was really amazed by those prices. I live in Moldova, the poorest country in Europe, and our prices are at least 20% higher than that in the cheapest supermarkets. Not even talking about the taxi, only the starting cost is twice the amount they payed for the ride, and each kilometer adds to the price.
Чего хотели на то и налетели! Живите теперь "счастливой европейской жизнью"! А "русские оккупанты" будут с голоду-холоду помирать, хехехе.
So clean and modern. Much nicer than my local grocery store.
Keeping them in mineral oil repels water and makes them last 2 to 3 times longer
thank you for advice
Простите, никого не хочу обидеть. Но Вы реально заморачивайтесь над этим?
Hi to Japan!😃 one of my favorite countries in the world!😍
I’m glad that you have a Russian woman in your life that introduced you Russian cousine. I think sushi is my most favorite food🤤🤤
I showed real and fake caviar in my video. I think the one you saw was the fake one because real caviar is never that cheap, even in Russia😊
I remember when I was in Japan, I bought a bunch of Royce chocolate. I still haven’t tried better tasting chocolate in my life😀

This is the caviar that came out at 10:23.

So you bought a souvenir for Japan.
I also think I bought some barbecue ingredients there. The картошка I ate at the barbecue was delicious.
I want to go to Russia again when Corona calms down.
Also, I am very honored to like Japan.
I'm fascinated with grocery stores in other countries. When ever I travel I always like to go to the grocery stores and compare things where I'm from (Canada). You are beautiful.
Thank you 😊
I live in the New York City Area. Every price you listed was about half or a third of what we pay here. Selection was better than I expected, and the food is probably healthier. Thanks for sharing!
Brooklyn has a store like this in the video called "Net Cost Market" but I agree with you...prices here are insane and on the rise. I'm in Florida and our grocery prices are insane!
it is. but here the salaries are about 300 euros a month and only the fixed costs are that much. Nothing left for living.

Hey Sveta, prices are comparable to where I live (Luxembourg). With my wife we are planning to visit your beautiful country. She already went to St Petersburg and loved it! Once the situation gets better we will definitely come. Cheers and thanks for the report. I believe that Westerners do not realize that Russia is a modern and rich country (even if there is a lot poverty still).

The thing you called a trolly, in America, it is called a shopping cart, or a shopping basket! love your video, very informative.
Prices are actually pretty comparable to my grocery stores here in W.Tx ,USA.....but I think such a dairy lover as myself would love to get lost in that dairy section! Bravo to the store itself, the cleanliness and orderliness are to be commended!
Prices shown in this video seem about 1/3 to 1/2 the price if the same things up here in New England.
And these prices already include taxes.
@@andrewb8235 I don't think it's that simple
the most impressive price for me is actuallly the taxi price, here in Norway just getting into a taxi is so expensive that I could say I developed a kind of taxi-phobia. I am literally scared of taxis!

Yep, in Russia taxi is a very viable option for transportation. even if it's just a ride to the store.

Thanks for the tour of the grocery store. Its a beautiful shop and the prices are amazing. It is much less expensive than the price here in Canada,... and I think the shop is nicer than allot of the shops here too! Thanks again!
