Yes it's a natural method of contraception. In technical term it's called "Lactational Amenorrhea" which starts just after parturition (delivery of the baby) and continues upto a maximum period of 6 months in which mother breast feeds her child and the chances of conception is nil during this period and so the male and female partner may have intercourse during this period without the need of condoms or any contraceptive insertions/pills.
But this is effective only upto 6 months.
*Note- And you can say chances of pregnancy/conception is very very low(almost nil) in this case. It doesn't mean that pregnancy will never occur in this case, it may occur in 0.01-0.05% females (if she is having unprotected sex) which is a very very rare case.*
