    Reading like writer is so helpful. I'll usually write down a short review when I'm 25% through the book, then 50%, then 75%, then at the end, the review being over the plot, characters, and writing itself. It helps me recognize what I like and dislike and how I feel about the pacing because I struggle with pacing. That way, I can incorporate that into my own writing. Reflecting on what you read as a writer is so valuable.

    as a fanfic writer, i definitely agree with the second tip! reading like a writer is not only fun, but helpful and productive. what i do when reading is mentally or physically note things id fix in the writing, such as typos, confusing strings of words, and awkward stops, and things that inspire me, for example, the main character in the fic im reading being flexible, which gave me the idea to have an ex-gymnast as a main character. i also write like im writing, if that makes sense. instead of just saying 'i 100% agree with tip 2' i try to write in paragraphs when its appropriate, such as now. i also tend to include whats thought of as minor or unimportant details, as those are crucial in writing.

      and as for tip 5, depending on how you are, seeing your word count can be helpful for motivation, but only when your done with your chapter, per say. when i see my word count, i think of the word count of other works, as they are so much higher than mine, which pushes me to write more! but if that discourages you, ignoring your word count is for the better.

    I think it’s so impressive how much content you put out on your channel and your podcast and instagram, and your so consistent too. I thought it would be cool if you made a video on how you do this because especially in this day and age the way a lot of authors reach people is through their online presence. And it’s kind of built in as part of the job.

    My Tip: Don't shy away from reading craft books! Personally, I love "Story Genius" (Lisa Cron), "Save the Cat! Write a Novel" (Jessica Brody), and "The First 50 Pages" by Jeff Gerke. But remember a key thing with craft books: not everything that is recommended will work for your writing habits/style! But learning new skills and new ways to think about stories can help improve your foundational draft immensely. 💜

    I love these tips!!💛 my favourite one over the years has definitely been "reading like a writer" :) annotating stories and studying narrative structure has helped me immensely, but the tip you mentioned about "calling yourself a writer" is honestly underrated! so many writers talk down to themselves when they shouldn't. if writing is meaningful to you, then you *are* a writer :))

    • @ananeu
      @ananeu  Рік тому +1

      aw kris! i totally agree! writers need to have more faith in themselves and their work. writing confidence is something that can grow overtime and be shattered so quickly. its difficult when someone close to you degrades your work. but most of the time that person is ourselves. tysm for watching kris!! can't wait for more content on your channel too

    I agree with the word count tip 100 percent. I was getting really hard on myself with word count, to the point I was belittling myself for not hitting the same numbers in the same time frame I did the day prior. It's so unproductive and can set you back.

    Yes ! To all of these tips 🙂 especially writing by hand in a notebook it really helps with getting in the flow again and helps with brainstorming. And tracking your writing through time is easier. I experience the same thing with word count during Nanowrimo it actually made me more discouraged to keep up with everyone else. Because actually alot of things goes into writing doing research, brainstorming, different drafts and word count is the last thing to worry about since it changes with editing.
    Another tip if you track your writing with using time you can also use a task or to do list to see what you've accomplished during that time. Can

    Thank you for these tips. I totally agree and recommend writing on paper especially when writing short forms of writing like poetry or flash to get first drafts done. I also recommend The Great Gatsby to read as a writer if you haven't all ready. As a reader I understand its not the most interesting book available but as a writer I think its a good look in how to craft a story with complexed characters and a unreliable narrator. I think Kris MF also did a video on books that impacted her writing which might be useful for you. :)

    thank youu! I find the "read like a writer tip" really helpful, especially when your reading from your favorite authors! (so in my case, Jennifer Nielsen lol) Its a useful skill since you can see exactly how they write and what is it about their style that makes you enjoy it so much. Bonus tip is to reread your favorite books or your favorite series and try to take notes on their writing style! Taking ideas from different authors and then comparing them will help you in understanding how to find a writing style :)
    Side note: could you actually make a video on writing style? I really want to know how
