lol…watching you remove the worm brought this to mind…lol….What’s worse than biting into an apple and finding a worm? Finding half of one…lol…
Haha that is EXACTLY what was going through my mind at the time lol 😀
Big respect for those bugs, they are living on poisonous wood! 😊
@@lizacole9520 Respect indeed! 😀
Mike, this was an especially entertaining video. The piece went through quite the shape metamorphosis...from sort of an, er, anatomical shape to a more...altered variation on that shape, to a chess bishop and finally to the lovely final shape. Good choice in the end and really lovely wood. Thanks for all the beautiful turns this year and the best to you and yours in 2025!
Thanks so much Leigh and the same to you and yours 😀
My mind was going that way as well 🤣
Great design and beautiful vase. It looked like a gigant chess piece up until the hollowing out part. The race against the worms is real. But you have to admire those little creatures being able to chew up that poisonous wood and make a living out of it.
Haha yes you do and thanks 🙂
Watching you has brought back my love for wood turning,I’ve had a lovely river red gum burl sitting in the corner of my shed for years and now I’m going to have a go at it
Fantastic Si, let me know how you get on, have fun 😀
go for it Si 👍
@@MikeHolton been measuring and scratching my head all day as to where to start cutting it down to size, she’s 2 meters by 1.6 and 820 mm deep, thick I might need my chainsaw, lol
@@siquinnell6068 Haha, yes I think you may, a handsaw would take till this time next year lol
Just another old lady who loves to watch you create art
Thanks Barbara and I'm happy to have you 😀
Very nice finished vase. So glad to see you managed to get rid of the bugs. They certainly guided your progress.
Me too and yes they did make a few changes lol 😀
Laburnum is something that doesn't grow around my neck of the woods, so I have never handled it. But it is a very striking contrast in its colors through the grain. Very nice. I quite like the shape. I thought the scalloped stem was a good idea, but it would have had to be much thinner with more curves to make it work. It looks like all the fireworks that Americans didn't use on November 5th are blowing up tonight, and my dogs are hiding in various nooks and crannies in the house. Of course, the Pyrenean Mountain dog is the one that has tried to hide under the bed, and he doesn't fit well at all. Good wishes for the new year, and I'm looking forward to seeing more great stuff from you!
Thanks William, I have two Labradors, one hates fireworks or any bangs, he won't even come into the living room when we have the fire on. The other is just to stupid to fear anything. Happy new year 😀
All those bugs. Ugh. You're a trooper to finishing it, and making it look so lovely. I like the finish.
Thank you Mega 😊
Love the dog ball! And the bugs, lol. Beautiful vase. ❤
Haha thanks Lori 😀
Another masterpiece, Mike. That grain is almost psychedelic, in a natural kind of way. I must say, to me, it has the look of a luxurious pepper mill. Excellent. 👌
Thanks so much Bill 😄
Unique beautiful work of art! Thank you for sharing!
You're welcome and thanks Jeannine 😀
My daughter and I love watching you create beautiful pieces of art.
Thank you so much 😀
What a lovely piece. Well done with pressing on and making something unusual and interesting out of a chewed up log. 👏
Thank you very much Geoff 😀
That is a beautiful vase. I was quite surprised there wasn't more worm damage. like the design quite a bit. Great job as always Mike!
Thank you very much Will, I was so glad when I got past the damage 😀
Imagine being a beetle grub, minding your own business in a nice, cosy hole and suddenly finding yourself being centrifuged at 1100 RPM!
Haha just imagine lol 😀
What a beautiful vase. I wish I could buy it. I've been watching your channel for a little while now and so appreciate your craftsmanship. You really know how to bring out the beauty of the wood.
Thanks so much Daniel, this one may come up for sale but it would be in a few months. All the best, Mike 😀
That Laburnham vase is outstanding, I personally like the tiered version. It reminded me of a palm tree, and with the top you have on it, it looks very Egyptian.
Thanks David 😀
Laburnum does surprise me with the stunning variation in grain and this piece doesn’t disappoint. Well done for persevering with the worm issues
Thanks so much Damien 😀
Laburnum has a lovely grain, I love the vase. And the finish is beautiful. Thank you Mike.😊 xx
Thanks to you too Elaine 😀
wow a beautiful vase and a very interesting design process
cheers
Tony
Many thanks Tony 😀
I am surprised that last little bugger seemed to walk straight... i would think his brain would explode! Beautiful vase!
Haha thanks Carol 😀
Beautiful piece of wood! I love the unique design!
Thanks so much Mark 😀
Nice one Mike! Darn bugs can sure mess up a good time for us...but I know they were having a good time.
I wish my on my latest turning I could got passed the bug problems but you cant win them all. And I just would not give up LOL!
See you on the next one,
Gary
Haha thanks Gary, sometimes you can and sometimes you can't, I'm just glad I managed on this one, really not a fan of bugs lol. Happy New year! 😀
Brave man! As soon as I would’ve seen that first live bug I would’ve ditched the whole piece of wood! 🤣
Haha it did cross my mind 😀
Beautiful piece the worms took you on quite the journey.
Haha yes they did 😀
Mike
This piece was odd and different , which make it truly unique in my book.. I never heard of this wood, but it is awesome.. Of all the channels I watch... This is my favorite.. The Frye Guy...
Thanks so much I really appreciate it 😀
Very entertaining watching you deal with the worms. Love the final vase. Very unique design.
Glad you enjoyed it Chris and thanks 😀
The grain on this vase is beautiful! The worms did a nice design job, with a lot of help from your wood turning experience.
Thank you very much! Suzanne 😁
Laburnum is definitely one of my favourites to turn. You have done a super job turning this piece, although I did wonder what it would have been like with the opening on the other side. Again, you did a great job,
Kind regards From Will.
And happy new year to you and yours, 🙂👍
Thanks Will, I did consider turning it but I would have lost some of that beautiful crotch grain. Happy new year!! 😀
That is some beautiful wood! Love that the bugs helped with the design. 😂
Haha thanks Lollie 😊
As always, a stunning piece Mike. Really loved the goblet shape at the top
Thanks Francini 😀
Beautiful piece in the end, I really like the design you went with on the top, really interesting.
Polished up beautifully.
Thank you very much!😀
Always come away with a greater appreciation for your work. A great service you perform even for us old timers!
Thanks so much Jonny, I just enjoy what I do and am so humbled that others seem to enjoy it as well 😀
It's has amazing graining! Great job, as always! I have to say I saw a tulip opening when I saw this piece of wood. However, I haven't learned your trade, so I don't know what's possible or not. The worst option of seeing half of a worm is only seeing half of that worm, especially while you are eating fruit. 😂 That has happened to me on more occasions than I like. 😂 My interdialog has been. Thank goodness it tastes like the fruit I'm eating!😂
Haha that did cross my mind when I found the half lol 😀
That wood grain is astounding, Mike! 😊 I like it a lot. You listened to what the wood was saying to you and you have a fantastic end result! 😊
Thanks so much Andrea 😀
Very beautiful piece with a beautiful grain. The bugs were there to guide the shaping 😄
They were and I'm almost glad lol 😀
The grain and your finish are beautiful. I'm back in present time now
Haha thanks Jim and welcome back 😀
Great video!!! Beautiful colors in the grain.
Thanks Harold! 😀
Living bugs 🫣😣, glad they were only on the surface 😅. You gave it a very unique but beautiful design. Nice one Mike 👌. 🩵💜💙
Thanks Wendy 😀
That wood is beautiful. Makes a nice vase.
Thanks so much Tim 😀
That really shows off the beauty of Laburnum!! Bugs designed a fascinating unusual shape there 😄
Haha they did indeed 😀
I love the end result. Once you flattened the ridges down the side, the grain was just beautiful! Those worms and sawdust would have met a match in our outdoor firepit!
Haha thanks Lisa 😂
Beautiful grain in that wood. The design is unusual, but who wants average!! Way to adapt on the fly! You handled those worms better than I could.
Thank you very much Lisa, why whole skin was crawling lol 😀
Laburnum is certainly a lovely wood to turn. You made a great job of making a vase that reminded me of the world cup. Well done Mike and Happy new year to you and yours.
Thanks Kev and the same to you and your family 😀
I don't turn wood. I'm just an old lady who finds this fascinating. You take bland and sometimes ugly wood and bring out their inner beauty. Love your work. I thought throughout the video that this piece should be called the Queen as the shape reminds me of a chess piece queen.
Thanks Jacey, you are right it does! Happy new year 😀
@@MikeHolton thank you. I'm from Indiana. I really admire your talent. Happy New Year to you and your lovely family. I look forward to seeing your 2025 creations.
@@jaceywarren1528 Thanks Jacey, I will always do my best 😀
😂😂😂No wonder the bugs liked that beautiful wood. As usual you created a lovely piece. With the help of the living dead. 😂
Haha thanks 😂
Love it.
I would love to see more of your beading tools used in a piece. You gave a brief demonstration some time ago. It would be interesting to see them used again.
Thanks, Mike, and a happy new year to you and your family.
Thanks Julian, to be honest I did consider using them on this, all the best for 2025 😀
27:27 Perseverance brings reward...and a small surprise. 😁 Love how your idea evolved into a lovely piece with a funny story. Here's to another year of wonderful surprises in 2025. Happy New Year! 🎉🎉😊
Thanks so much Cynthia and thanks as always for you amazing support, I hope you and your family have a wonderful New Year 😀
Quite ironic that you used shellac which is made from insects to decorate a piece that was full of them!! LOL
Great video as always, keep up the great work.
Take care and stay safe,
Joe
Thank you Joe and the irony was not lost on me lol 😊
beautiful. thank you for sharing such beautiful work
Thanks Jean, you are very welcome 😀
Another wonderful pivot, resulting in such an interesting object d’art!
Thanks so much Dawn 😀
Beautiful piece. The best thing about your videos is you let us into your head and what you are thinking. That is awesome. Very good job.
Thank you so much I really appreciate it 😀
Love laburnum looks fantastic with finish on great work
Thank you! Cheers Chris 😀
Beautiful vase! I love to watch you. The way you explain everything is better than some. Wishing you and your family a Happy New Year 🎊🎉
Thank you Jacqueline! You too 😀
Great job! You really stuck with it and didn't let the worms deter you. The final design looks somewhat like an enormous pepper mill, but that's perfectly alright. They design pepper mills like that because that shape is elegant and beautiful. I'm impressed!
Thanks so much Shawn! 😀
Well done for persevering with this, turned out great
Thanks Gail 😀
Bugs! Eww! It would have been chucked in the fire pit as my hubby would have been singing a rendition of burn ‘buggies’ burn! lol. 😂 I am thrilled you were a braver little soldier and dealt with them in a true Yorkshireman way, albeit squirming a lot less than my Fellow Yorkshireman hubby would have been. With me hiding behind him cringing! 😂😂
Seriously though Mike , you turned this bug infested log into another magnificent masterpiece! You always allow the wood to speak its true beauty to you, bringing out the most perfect design to show off the gorgeous wood grain to perfection. I love this design, such a tactile result. Thank you for making something that I wouldn’t be able to resist from touching and feeling this exquisite vase out of something I wouldn’t want to be within a mile of! ❤😊
Thanks so much Shelley and I'm glad I'm not the only one squirming lol. All the best for 2025 to you and yours. Mike 😍
Fantastic piece. Love the graining. Reminds me of a Bishop on a chess board. From what you said, you let the wood tell you what it wants to be is the same i do with my stones..👍👍
Thank you very much William, it is the same process, natural objects want to be made a certain way 😀
Well done .. Beautiful grain . it would have made a fantastic lamp some of your design are pure art.
Thank you very much John! 😀
What an absolutely beautiful Laburnum vase, Mike! 🐛 🐜🪲🪳🤢🤮…🤣😆😂 “A piece designed by a bug”💕 Thanks for sharing. Have a safe and Happy New Year 🎉🎊🎈🎆
Thanks so much Mary and the very same to you too 😀
Great piece, great video, such a nice result !
Thank you very much Jack 🙂
Lovely result Mike. Beautiful laburnum.
Thanks so much Stephen 😀
Beautiful wood and final piece. Reminds me of a torch ... especially with the branch pith as a switch.
Thank you very much Max, it does have that look 😀
It looks like a modern trophy. I love it
Haha thanks 😀
Great job Mike. Awesome, as usual.
Thanks so much Steve 😁
I cannot agree more_ I don’t mind wormholes but I am thoroughly appalled by worms!!! Well done.
Thanks Beth 😀
First sight of summit wriggling I'd run a mile and it might of ended up on the log burner lol. well done for sticking with it Mike, I'm gonna go with a version of the olympic torch 😂
Haha thanks David and good call!! 😀
Wasn’t expecting the wildlife 😂. Another fine piece, reminds me of an Italian pepper shaker 😀
Thanks Jason me too 😀
I absolutely love it. My personal taste would be exactly the shape as you’ve created it, but with the opening / top at the other side - a little shout out to an art deco moment :) gorgeous work!
Thanks so much that would have been cool! 😀
I'm impressed with how elegant the final piece looks. Even before you discovered the bugs, the initial piece screamed rustic.
It certainly did, thanks Ben 😀
Beautiful peace of work Mike!
Thanks Michael 😀
Beautiful piece. As a fairly new turner I appreciate the tips, tricks, & not editing out the little hiccups along the way.
You're welcome, if I leave in the mistakes and problems we can all learn together 😊
It's very beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers James 😀
Really appreciate how you talk through your design decisions.
Thanks! I hope it helps people with their creative work 😀
Always interesting to watch your creative process.
Thanks Jake, glad you enjoy it 😀
Love the patterns in that. It looks like a big chess piece 😁
Haha thanks Donna and I agree 😂
Love watching your videos and the grain of different woods that you use.
Thanks so much Kate 😀
It always cracks me up to see a man so creeped out by a tiny insect…beautiful piece as always. Happy new year to you and yours!
Haha thanks Alicia, I'm glad I amuse you lol 😀 All the best 😂
Finished. Looks great - that wood is always amazing!
Thanks again Tony, it never lets you down that wood! 😀
Gorgeous wood. I'm very keen on that end grain, as finished.
You and me both! Thanks Scott 😀
Another awesome piece. Keep up the amazing work. 👽
Will always try 😀
The shape works wonderfully with the grain of the piece. Beautiful vase. Have a safe and happy new year
Thank you! You too eric 😀
Stunning vase unique opening which I really like
Glad you like it Christopher 😀
An unusual but elegant piece after so many issue, your skill shows what can be done if you just go with the flow and work with what you have.
Thanks so much Simon, it pays to be flexible 😀
Another wonderful piece. Happy New Year to you and your family.
Thanks and the same to you and yours 😀
Stayed flexible nice looking finishe project.
Thanks Darren, it always helps to be open minded 😀
That squeak from the dog's toy was completely unexpected and entirely hilarious!
Haha thanks 😂
Gorgeous piece!
Thanks so much Carol 😀
After watching this all the way thru and seeing the final design, I am in awe of how it was created. The grain in that wood is amazing.
Thanks so much Carolyn 😀
Well done for pushing the boundaries on this one! Just waiting for my laburnum to season......
Haha thanks Dylan and keep yours away from bugs lol
It ended up looking fabulous.... but those bugs! It would have been into a fire if it had been me. I really don't care for bugs.
A very Happy New Year, Mike... and all the best to you and your family for 2025. Thank you for all the hours of relaxing video. ♥
Thanks so much and I was very temped to burn it as well lol. All the best to you and yours as well. Thanks, Mike 😀
It looks rather like the Olympic torch done in wood. A spray of reds and yellows would look very cool in it. Beautiful work, Mike!
Great idea thanks Jennifer 🙂
Another challenging turn. Well done!
Thanks so much Valerie 😀
What fun! Except for those icky worms of course. The wood is gorgeous and perfect for a vase. Best wishes for the New Year.
Thank you! Cheers Wes and the same to you 😀
I can see why you love turning this wood. The grain is unbelievable as well as the colors.
Happy New Years 🥂🎉🥳
Thanks Barry and the same to you 😀
That would make a gorgeous stand for a flower arrangement.
Thanks Anne I agree 😀
I love the shape with the goblet opening and the color is beautiful. The tool rack looks terrific also. Thank you Mike. Happy New Year.
Thanks David and the same to you 😀
It was like an episode of "Get me out of here!" with all those bugs. They're like juicy maggots, you could probably have had them for dinner. Thanks for getting the video out and Happy New Year. It's a lovely structural piece, as others have commented it bears a resemblance to a chess piece. Laburnum has such an elegant grain and colour structural pieces suit it really well.
Thanks so much Rachel 😀
Very funny seeing you squirm a little, the little fellas were just wishing you a happy new year I'm sure🤭Lovely design as always.
Haha I'm sure they were but nope, I do not like! 😀
Glorious! Happy New year sir! X
Thanks my friend and the same to you 😀
