"The Power Suit's shielding loses energy with each attack; collect energy to keep the shielding charged." - Metroid Prime, Logbook The Power Suit has a force field.
Liam Mabelitini My theory is that what is left of the enemy’s bodies is converted into energy after the explosion. The suit then determines what the energy is best used for.
Liam Mabelitini I’ve always thought it was both. In “Metroid Prime 2: Echoes,” neither the dark suit nor light suit have better protection than the basic varia suit (obviously only counting against actual attacks. The suit upgrades in that game provide better protection against the atmosphere of Dark Aether, rather than attacks.) The dark suit is ridiculously well armored, while the light suit looks like it’d break if you looked at it funny. Unless the strength of the suit’s shields vary between them, I don’t know how that would work.
If anything, Samus's suit having a shield might just make her more of a "magical girl", not less. Just look at what the typical magical girl wears, or more to the point how little they wear, and yet those skimpy outfits some how protect them from all sorts of dangerous attacks. How else could that be if not some kind of shield?
"emotions usually win battles on magical girl anime" I mean you're not wrong, I just don't want to admit synphogear uses this a lot and all the awesome attacks work that way...bye
I’m going to assume that by “thankfully”, you mean you are thankful that you choose not to tackle the mountain sized encyclopedia that is Steven Universe lore because that is a TV show and you focus on video games.....or because you don’t want to deal with that show’s fan base. Which is fair.
15:01 - They're either schematics or... NANOMACHINES, SON! No, seriously, they could be capsules containing a large quantity of nanobots and a program that instructs the robots to modify the suit to add the functionality of the powerup.
The thing with powerups is that I don't think there's something special about the powerups themselves. While in most instances, she gets her abilities through original chozo tech where that might be true, she can also assimilate any kind of tech not originally meant for her suit, seen by her getting missile upgrades from Federation ammo crates and troopers, Luminoth upgrades in MP2, the Hazard shield and Hunter abilities from MP3. I've been saying before that I think Chozo Tech has the ability to freely convert energy to matter and back, and Lockstins point is kind of similar to this as well. Most open questions about weird plothole suit abilities get neatly filled in by this. The best example though is Ghors Plasma Lance. It is probably not conveniently tailor-made to Chozo standards, it is not even a traditional Beam weapon for that matter, yet you still get the regular Plasma Beam from getting it. This shows that the Suit will just take in anything to use as a basis for powerups, solving the biggest problem with why she keeps conveniently running into the same Powerups she lost before in every game. She doesn't, her suit just uses whatever works as a substitute.
Technically, the witch Samantha from the American show _Bewitched_ is the oldest character I'm aware of who laid the groundwork for modern magical girl shows.
“Metroids eat souls.” Well that’s not necessarily true. Just because it’s stated that Metroids consume “life energy” does not mean in any way that they’re eating souls. Especially considering Metroids can absorb energy from technological equipment and radioactive substances like Phazon.
i feel they steal potential energy so they can steal the charge from machines and also the energy from living beings, but if ametroid suck ur body it will feel like if u are very tired, and hungry, but probably your soul will still be inside you(?)
Yamazake Whitesky Life energy has many meanings, it doesn’t just specifically relate to the soul. In fact, this is the first thing that pops up when I search “life energy definition” “On a very basic level, life energy is the energy that is present in living things and absent from nonliving things. Bodily functions occur because life energy drives those processes, not because of interactions between the chemicals that compose it.” In this case life energy is seen as a form of energy that drives the body to function, not another name for the soul. Whether that’s the case or not, that still doesn’t explain how Metroids would absorb the energy from things like Phazon or mechanical parts or systems. Even the Metroid wiki doesn’t say they eat souls cause there’s no basis for it. A more likely thing is that Metroids absorb the electricity in organic beings nervous systems and brains, since people can output energy ranging from 200 watts to 2,000 watts depending on certain factors. Or maybe they even feed off of the radiation things emit. (Yes people emit small amounts of various types of radiation depending on many factors)
Super missiles are also separate in Sami’s returns and zero mission. I also think I read in prime somewhere that the energy goes to repair Samus injuries, but I may be wrong.

This video makes complete sense when you look at it that way. Samus just doesn't look like one. I loved the video and i would like to see other stuff like this in the future.
I accept the evidence presented as accurate to both the Magical Girl genre and to the Metroid series. I, however, refuse to accept the ultimate conclusion presented on the grounds of no.
I would agree that it's a stretch to call her a "magical girl," but she ticks most of the boxes, and would probably feel like one to someone who can sense magic.
Lockstin: Samus is a Magical Girl! Me, an intellectual: If that were the case, Metroid would be more popular in its home country of Japan. EDIT: Also, you say life energy I hear highly advanced quantum nano-machines.
while i love seeing sailor moon and some of my other favorite magical girl animes on gnoggin, and i know you're writing/playing towards a specific audience, the not so low-key misogyny of saying things like "winning battles by being prettier and more pink than the enemy or something- idk it's girl-cartoon-logic" is not just kinda rude, it's lazy research and script writing. yes emotions are a big part of magical girl anime, but just because those emotions are "love" and "friendship" rather than the emotions of "revenge" and "grief" and "anger" of more masculine focused shonen anime doesn't mean they're any less serious of shows. dbz, a very popular shonen anime, shares a lot of traits with magical girl anime- form changes based on emotional strength/confidence, personal growth and learning how to overcome personal short comings, enemies becoming good guys through the power of friendship. i know you mention magical girl tropes pop up in other media including action media, but it's not just in magical girl inspired media. there are just things that happen in media in general that also happen to be common in magical girl genre. i love you guys, and i love that you're branching out and posting non-pokemon videos, and again, i do know you're writing for a specific audience, but it kinda sucks that you guys are all about getting serious (sometimes strategically and humorously too serious) about video games and media, yet don't fully take this genre seriously. all that being said i did REALLY like this episode! i love when y'all do non-pokemon stuff, and this was a really fun dive into samus and the suit. here's so more stuff like this in 2020!
I can't believe you didn't mention Samus' Crystal Flash ability from Super Metroid, which uses "ammo" from her weapons to replenish her health when it's dangerously low and conveniently enough, has a super magical-girl-style name already.
Well after all "Samus Returns" kinda confirms all of this, in the memories you can see the Chozos analysing and capturing life energy from the dead creatures of SR388. I always suspected that was the case even before that tbh, it's great to see them confirming it and you talking about it ^^ That said, a little nitpick: the "varia suit" is only a specific upgrade of her suit, like the "gravity suit", the general name of the whole thing is actually "power suit".

"The Power Suit's shielding loses energy with each attack; collect energy to keep the shielding charged." - Metroid Prime, Logbook
The Power Suit has a force field.
Thanks M8, was looking for this.
Liam Mabelitini My theory is that what is left of the enemy’s bodies is converted into energy after the explosion. The suit then determines what the energy is best used for.
was waiting for this reply.
This explains the amount of “fanart” of samus and squid like entities 🤔

15:01 - They're either schematics or... NANOMACHINES, SON!
No, seriously, they could be capsules containing a large quantity of nanobots and a program that instructs the robots to modify the suit to add the functionality of the powerup.
spiritual nanobots (?) the Chozo were space science buddhist
@@franciscocataldo9238 Nanobots directed by a guiding spirit rather than a more mechanical computer program? Something like that.
I was literally thinking "nanobots" throughout the whole video, as a possible explanation for everything.
@@DanVzare That doesn't explain the morph ball, though.

“Metroids eat souls.”
Well that’s not necessarily true.
Just because it’s stated that Metroids consume “life energy” does not mean in any way that they’re eating souls.
Especially considering Metroids can absorb energy from technological equipment and radioactive substances like Phazon.
Life energy literally means the energy that comes from life itself, aka soul
i feel they steal potential energy so they can steal the charge from machines and also the energy from living beings, but if ametroid suck ur body it will feel like if u are very tired, and hungry, but probably your soul will still be inside you(?)
@@Yamartim
Wouldn't life energy just be physical vitality, and not souls?
Once all that is gone you're dead.
Yamazake Whitesky Life energy has many meanings, it doesn’t just specifically relate to the soul.
In fact, this is the first thing that pops up when I search “life energy definition”
“On a very basic level, life energy is the energy that is present in living things and absent from nonliving things. Bodily functions occur because life energy drives those processes, not because of interactions between the chemicals that compose it.”
In this case life energy is seen as a form of energy that drives the body to function, not another name for the soul.
Matthew Smith Exactly, it has many meanings depending on culture and information.
-empowered by an outside force with supernatural powers
-abilities beyond a normal human
-stronger after transforming

I accept the evidence presented as accurate to both the Magical Girl genre and to the Metroid series. I, however, refuse to accept the ultimate conclusion presented on the grounds of no.
I would agree that it's a stretch to call her a "magical girl," but she ticks most of the boxes, and would probably feel like one to someone who can sense magic.

while i love seeing sailor moon and some of my other favorite magical girl animes on gnoggin, and i know you're writing/playing towards a specific audience, the not so low-key misogyny of saying things like "winning battles by being prettier and more pink than the enemy or something- idk it's girl-cartoon-logic" is not just kinda rude, it's lazy research and script writing. yes emotions are a big part of magical girl anime, but just because those emotions are "love" and "friendship" rather than the emotions of "revenge" and "grief" and "anger" of more masculine focused shonen anime doesn't mean they're any less serious of shows. dbz, a very popular shonen anime, shares a lot of traits with magical girl anime- form changes based on emotional strength/confidence, personal growth and learning how to overcome personal short comings, enemies becoming good guys through the power of friendship. i know you mention magical girl tropes pop up in other media including action media, but it's not just in magical girl inspired media. there are just things that happen in media in general that also happen to be common in magical girl genre.
i love you guys, and i love that you're branching out and posting non-pokemon videos, and again, i do know you're writing for a specific audience, but it kinda sucks that you guys are all about getting serious (sometimes strategically and humorously too serious) about video games and media, yet don't fully take this genre seriously.
all that being said i did REALLY like this episode! i love when y'all do non-pokemon stuff, and this was a really fun dive into samus and the suit. here's so more stuff like this in 2020!
