The reason Sasha is so into art is because she is actually the bald painting the Scream by Edvard Munch and escaped during a Night at the Museum. Rupaul used her witchcraft to cage Sasha into a painting and would only let her tweet from her Wii. Fortunately, Megami, the protector of Queer Art, freed Sasha.
I saw it in person, second time for me, but I took my friend who had not seen any drag show in person before. She needed several moments to process everything 😂
I like how Serena Chacha was the first person to read books, but Sasha Velour was the first smart person. Like what kind of dumb shit was Serena reading?
I remember RuPaul making an eating disorder joke during season 8, it was the first time the show made me feel really uncomfortable. So I'll always appreciate Sasha's "don't joke about that", even if it was meme'd to death
My wife had been watching Drag Race for about a year or so prior to season 9. I'd come in and watch random episodes with her but it didn't really grab me. Season 9 and in particular Sasha Velour was the first time I watched a Drag Race season beginning to end. I was hooked on her aesthetic and vibes and felt like she was constantly elevating the performance aspects of drag. Since then I've watched every season live, all of the seasons I didn't initially watch with my wife, all of the international seasons, and now I'm one of your Patreons so I can get good deep dives on elements of the franchise.
Thank you for sharing this, I always love hearing about how other people fell in love with this show. And I’m so happy we all get to have fun talking about it together 💚
Sasha is definitely one of my absolute favorite winners. People discredit her because they only look at the wins on the show... But she was high most of the season and if you compared her and shea's placements week after week, they were going toe to toe. Sasha just edged her out in the finale, where she mopped the floor with everyone. She is one of those winners that transcended their drag race legacy and became something more than a drag race winner. Her shows in europe were sold out in pretty large and high brow venues, I'm sure many people in the audience had never even seen drag race. That's amazing.
Season 9 was the first season I watched and Sasha was the first queen I truly fell in love with. I was *so* excited when she won and was shocked by all the backlash as I didn't know the shows history. Still, to this day I think she's one of the smartest, most surprising and groundbreaking queens to ever compete. I mean who else could go on and win the competition, disappear from the franchise for 5 years, and then show up randomly in one of the many spinoffs that wasn't even getting much hype. She truly is original and I appreciate that so much
Sasha has by far the best one woman show I have ever seen. If you have a chance to see her live doing her show jump on it because it is most certainly worth it. Also if you are ever in New York City for nightgowns it is definitely worth it also. The amount of giving back to the community that she does is amazing and I am so glad she won.
Its too bad nina flowers doesnt really do drag anymore because she really walked in season 1 so sasha could run, shes definitely one i would considered an artist first and a drag queen second, most of her looks whether they were made or brought would hold up on any drag race season, i love bebe but in my mind nina should have gotten her flowers, pun intended lol.
Sasha’s inspiration predates Nina. It comes from a different place and time altogether. Just because they are both bald doesn’t make their drag the same at all. Not even close.
Sasha instantly became a favourite of mine when she mentioned gender theorist. Judith Butler. I think it was the first time JB was mentioned on the show, maybe even the last, and I guess I felt SV was my kind of queen. JB refers to drag queens in her discussion of the performativity of gender in “Gender Trouble”. Needless to say (but I’ll say it anyway), I bought Sasha’s t-shirt and for a long time, it was the only drag queen T-shirt I owned. I love her. Her eyes are soulful.
Sasha's win was not shocking. That lipsync, though, was a moment in tv history that just hits you in a very way. You're right. It set a standard and we see it every finale and even during lip sync for your life. Nobody has matched the emotional (no pun intended) level that Sasha hit. Sasha's win was no surprise however. It was always going to be Sasha or Trinity.
I saw both Smoke and Mirrors and The Big Reveal in Hamburg and they honestly changed and inspired something within me. Those shows are just amazing and they flew by so fast that I was heartbroken when they ended. I was gagged the whole time. It's an art installation meets a TedTalk meets Theater. I laughed, i cried, i think I got a bloody throat from screaming for all the times i was stunned 😂 Sasha is so sweet and nice and I will never forget the shows or meet and greet and how down to earth she was. There's many talented Queens out there but Sasha will always have a special place in my heart 🖤
i think it was shade to asia o’hara bc apparently the butterflies weren’t actually d worded, they were still in hybernation state and the theatre’s temperature wasn’t warm enough to wake the butterflies up 😭💀
DUDE you’re so right about it being a whole different thing having watched older seasons. Me n my friends watched together. The moment was pure electricity. A mouth drop goosebump inducting moment we screamed out loud we had no idea. GOBSMACKED. WE WERE GOBSMACKED.
She really just makes me feel seen, it’s one thing to be fierce it’s another to be an advocate for being creative, bright, brilliant and fierce. I’d love to see her and Sasha Colby on an all winners, they work together so well on Nightgowns so a place where they could perform together would be terrific!
Thank you for this one, GreenGay! Sasha remains one of my favorites and people rarely talk about her these days. She accomplished exactly what she asked of us in the audience: she elevated drag through creativity. Her drag persona wasn't a two-dimensional "glam" or "quirky" character, but both cabaret and clown simultaneously, (in a crown that was no pageant tiara.) The artsy approach to drag can feel pretentious, but Sasha's self-awareness and humor made her performance accessible to anyone; whether you recognized a reference or not, you were entertained.👑🖤
"I'm more true than real" (and the related "Realness fools me, I'm a better pretender") line in 'Category Is' is likely a reference to Judith Butler and their discussion of realness in relation to the NYC ballroom scene and documentaries like Paris is Burning.
I always loved Sasha's verse in Category Is because it really resonated with me. "I'm more true than real" to me means that sometimes the things that are constructed can reveal the most about you. You don't have to directly state a fact about you in order for someone to see it in what you do. You can build and construct yourself and your art but it always reveals something about you. Yeah, yeah "sometimes the curtains are just blue" or whatever but I really feel like Sasha really wants to reveal her true self through her drag.
I’ve seen a lot of drag race queens perform live and Sasha is by far the most enchanting, entertaining and charming one!! I’ve seen her twice and after the last time, I promised myself that for the next, I’m gonna get the more expensive tickets just to see her show closer!!
I was an instant fan of Sasha the second she came through the door on episode 1. I was rooting for her the whole season and during the finale when the rose reveal happened I actually burst into tears because of, no pun intended, how emotional it made me. I actually met her at drag con a while back and showed her the little tattoo on my wrist I designed based off of her famous crown and unibrow. She loved it and gave me the hugest hug, and I’m lucky enough to have photos of her reacting to my tattoo. When she was signing a photo for me we talked briefly about cartooning and illustration, and she told me to never stop creating and to keep making art. I know it sounds like a “r/that happened” moment now that I’m typing it out lol, but that brief interaction still means so much to me all these years later.
I love Shea but watching season 9 for the first time I was always rooting for Sasha. She did very well consistently throughout the season . Was very happy when she won. Love the other s9 ladies as well too ofc :) but for me when people say Shea is the obvious winner- well.. Sasha and Trinity both had amazing track records as well (&peppermint had great performances too)
9:40 you can have an eating disorder, it doesnt give you an excuse to say others have one, and to try and joke about another persons experience, it's fine to joke about your own, unless the other person has explicitly said it's ok, dont joke about such serious topics when its in the middle of a serious conversation
yeah, having an ED yourself dosen't make it okay for you to be insensitive to others who also have one. even less so if you don't even have the same disorder.
God s9 was so magical to watch as it happened. She was my pick to win from the start (her performance of Cellophane is to this day one of the most beautiful performances I’ve ever seen and is what made me a fan before the season started), but by the end I didn’t think she’d pull it off… and then that finale happened. I still get chills rewatching it, the whole setting is so surreal. Also Smoke and Mirrors is one of the best live drag shows I’ve ever seen, Sasha is so SO good at what she does.
I watched the reveal in a bar here at home in NYC the night it aired and I’ll NEVER forget the reaction of the crowd. Goosebumps. This video made me love her even more. ❤🌹 What an icon.
She is the epitome of how staying calm and composed in a debate only makes your opponent look like an asshole when they start getting overly emotional.
I saw my first ever drag show a few months ago, The Big Reveal in Portland. Watching Sasha Velour reveal that she was the arm chair that had been on stage for half an hour and then become a dancing chair dress transformer was nothing short of life changing
Started watching in 2020, with s12, 11, 10 and then 9. And when I say that lipsync for the crown only made sense when I watched season 9... boy. the impact, it was intense, I cried. Stan Sasha. Her rose petals cleared my acne and cured my covid depression.
If you have the chance to see Sasha live, don't miss it. Seriously. What a queen & what a show!!! She has the brains, the looks, the talent... When I thought I could see the next ruveal coming, she gagged me again. Starting from the moment she opened the show and came out as a chair. Just... Chefs kiss! The fact she came from such a welcoming family which is something she talked about too, also made me feel like I was literally watching a kid whose dream came to life and it worked out really nicely, it was a really heart warming moment to see her first drag performance as a kid. And she excels at it!
Season 9 was the first season that I was watching as it was airing, and I fell in love with Sasha as soon as she entered the werkroom. But at the time I didn’t interact with the online fandom at all, so I didn’t even think that her path to victory wasn’t straightforward, because I guess I didn’t think that track records mattered that much. To me, she was just always the one to take it all because she seemed so different from all the previous seasons I watched. So I only found out about all the drama years later, especially after Shea’s run on the All Stars🌹👑
When we’re here comes we’re gonna get to see Sasha at her more fabulous and artistic we got a taste of the fashion Kookiness on season 9 and then we got to see her artistic style with all her tours like Night Gowns and smoke and mirrors but I think with the upcoming season we’re gonna see her explode into all three facets, looks, performance and activism I’m so excited
This video is great, really highlight’s everything that makes Sasha an outstanding and creative Queen. But girl… this title… the shade factor of 10 is crazy
I’m a Drag Race fan that got into the show via UA-cam around the time of season 9. I love that you made this video and I love being into the internet culture at that moment because the show was really starting to become legendary in a way. I remember the first time I saw the rose petal reveal I had goosebumps!! It felt like a renaissance and the dawn of a new era for the show. Sasha did something so legendary and unique that Sasha velour proved she will always be a winner of Drag Race and a legend to its legacy.
Sasha, Bianca and Jinx will always be my favorite winners As a former ED sufferer I can totally understand the '' Don't talk about that''. It can be offensive and it can be triggering
Thank you for doing this video, Sasha is my favorite queen ever, I have a signed pin of her finale look that by boyfriend got me in Argentina, she is such an important person in my life, when I’m doing things I feel motivated thinking about what Sasha would do, I hope to meet her one day ❤️
I'm not saying I am as smart or as cultured as Sasha, but being generally a brainy person amongst my friends who don't have ADHD and don't abuse their internet access (I need to put parentheses here for this emoji: 😅
me and my ex boyfriend watched a re-run of season 9 on our regional MTV (in The Netherlands Drag Race isn't broadcasted live, we get it a little later). Season 9 was terrific hands down with some iconic queens - but Sasha was our favourite for a LONG time during the season, and we were both super happy with her win. I love how she's one of the few intellectual queens that also manages to deliver most if not all challenges DR poses: from lip synching to sewing to comedy and performance, as well as acting, Sasha approaches each challenge thoughtfully and mostly with a sense of historical relevance. On a side note, I'm struck all of a sudden by the amount of roses featuring in Sasha's outfits throughout. I have no doubt this is a tribute to her mother. Over here we had a very popular girl band called The Dolly Dots during the 80s. They lost one of their members to cancer as well, and their song "All the Roses", originally lead sung by that particular band member, came to mind watching the vid and the clips of Sasha and her roses. Thus, it wouldn't be a stretch to see her use of the flower as a tribute to her mother passing from cancer.
I don't think she was an unexpected winner. She was so outstanding with her creativity and beauty and the way that she represented the future of drag so well. She was the clear winner for me throughout her season. :)
I actually got to see last of Sasha's Big Reveal performances in Portugal where I'm from, and since it was the last spot on the tour I feel like I'm not spoiling anything: she gagged right from the beggining when she was literally inside of a fucking living chair that turned into a dress. The other reveals were incredible, the performances were amazing, the pauses for costume changes were filled by hilarious fake commercials, and even the heartfelt conversations had a comedic twist. Sasha was never one of my favorites, but went because I really wanted to see a Rugirl live, and boy was I thoroughly impressed. If you get the chance to see Sasha live, even if she's not one of your favorites, please go! You'll change your mind about her, and even if you don't, I guarantee you will at least have a good time!
Shes never been one of my favorites nor do I really enjoy her kind of drag but its kind of impossible to not respect her art, shes very intellectual and very smart with whatever she does next and is very charismatic showing her empathy with her bald head drag and the story behind it in general, you cant not give her her (rose) flowers
I’m so glad that the first season I ever got to watch as it was airing was season 9. Me, my mom, and my sister all wanted different people to win and the rose petals ? GAGGED.
I’ve seen so many ru and not ru girls perform live but nothing tops seeing her Smoke and Mirrors tour. I took my dad with me for the show for this first drag show at 50 something years old and he LOVED it. Such a special memory. I’d love to see her tour in the UK again with Cheddar Gorgeous as I think they’d put on a hell of a show together
@GreenGay PLEASE DONT STOP MAKING CONTENT !!! The dopamine rush I get when I get notifications regarding your content is exactly what I need sometimes to get through my day ❤
I remember watching this air on tv and I was already a Sasha fan. I was rooting for her going to the finale. I thought Shae was great and was going to easily win. I was super happy and surprised when she won.
I watched season 9 for the first time very recently and once I got to the finale Sasha velour had already won my heart but I was a bit unsure how lipsync for the crown would go since we hadn't seen a lip sync from her yet. Now I had heard the phrase "Sasha velour moment" before but I didn't know the context and as soon as those petals came tumbling out of her wig I knew exactly what everyone was talking about.
I chose to start from the veeeerrrryy beginning but when my friends ask where to start I always say season 5. If they don’t have time to get into the first couple seasons. Usually I’m trying to get them caught up before another season starts which luckily I only follow the American franchise so far 😭
this finale was literally the peak of drag race, i watched a couple seasons following before quitting but i have no memory of them, should have ended it here
I started the series from s8 when it was in netflix so it was pretty late. I screamed at my phone in public when I watched the rose petals the very first time. It was historic moment.

"Nina should've been Blac Chyna."
This is the art Sasha talks and Megami protects.
Ain't that the truth mama
And another thing… definitely one of the most attractive contestants of the show out of drag imo. So gorgeous
That's an aspect of Sasha that really doesn't get appreciated enough - one of the most stunningly beautiful people that ever lived and breathed.
Stunning in and out of drag imo, very artistic face, it really matches her personality

Sasha is mothering the world of art ♥️🫦♥️
I love Sasha Velour ❤️ iconic winner
Easily one of my favorite winners, I love her creativity and how mindfully thought-out her aesthetic and art is.
One of the most popular queens in Mexico, I remember watching drag race Mexico and she was the one of the queens named as the contestants favs ❤❤
14:56 SHE HAD A PLAN B?!?!
14:05 really was THE moment she change everything it was hysterical seen for the first time
season 9 was the second season I see in real time
This video is great, really highlight’s everything that makes Sasha an outstanding and creative Queen.
Sasha, Bianca and Jinx will always be my favorite winners
As a former ED sufferer I can totally understand the '' Don't talk about that''.
About to head to bed for an exciting day tomorrow, so this is perfect. Perfect. Perfect.
Not sasha velour being a hottie in this young picture in 4:55.
Thank you for making this video. Velour is my favorite queen of all time🫶
me and my ex boyfriend watched a re-run of season 9 on our regional MTV (in The Netherlands Drag Race isn't broadcasted live, we get it a little later).
Will always be my fave rugirl ever idcc
"The drag equivalent of Albert Einstein "
I cackled byeee we're like 2 minutes in bitch chill 😂😂😂
im a new drag race fan, but i took the time to watch all the seasons in order to watch the progression. couldn't recommend enough
The Golden Standard, love her!
I saw her perform Smoke and Mirrors live and it was the best show i have ever been to! Wonderful !!
I’m so glad that the first season I ever got to watch as it was airing was season 9. Me, my mom, and my sister all wanted different people to win and the rose petals ? GAGGED.
i appreciated your interpretation of sasha's verse, well said!
mama, kudos for saying that. for spilling
Drag king Sasha will be in my head for atleast a month 😔
my parents and i just watched s9 and ughhh i love sasha so much... perfect timing for this videooo
@GreenGay
PLEASE DONT STOP MAKING CONTENT !!!
Sasha & Shea work so well together!! Both very talented queens❤
Sasha actually had a great track record. That last episode was a challenge too and she won the third challenge that day.
Season 9 was the first season I watched with no spoilers and no expectations. What a privilege 😌
Ok, I cried a little watching this, when you explained why her drag is the way it is.
I love Sasha Velour, and I'm happy she won. She is one of my favorite.
her new show is amazing, my fav drag queen show
I watched season 9 for the first time very recently and once I got to the finale Sasha velour had already won my heart but I was a bit unsure how lipsync for the crown would go since we hadn't seen a lip sync from her yet.
Usually I’m trying to get them caught up before another season starts which luckily I only follow the American franchise so far 😭
really liked this video and especially how u covered the section about sasha and her mom . didnt know that info
Wow that advice Sasha's mom gave her... Thabk you I feel we all need it to fight the dread of unproductivity and the pain of proceastination
Tia deserved her win her glow up is unmatched in every way !
this finale was literally the peak of drag race, i watched a couple seasons following before quitting but i have no memory of them, should have ended it here
The way she wore a rose in the first episode, the top 4 verses, and then the finale
This series is so smart - there's so much behind every queen and these videos are always enlighening.
I started the series from s8 when it was in netflix so it was pretty late. I screamed at my phone in public when I watched the rose petals the very first time. It was historic moment.
“Bee-Vee galri” 😭😭😭
Mama kudos for reading that for smarting
