  • Sorry for the video. This was taken by a friend on our mission team.
    A little history on Tegucigalpa:
Toncontin international airport in Tegucigalpa, Honduras is recognized as history channel's #3 most dangerous airport in the world.
    Pre-2004 it was #2.
Due to the altitude, mountains, constant wind and turbulence, unpredictable weather patterns, surroundings, and length of runway, it was recognized as this. After a crash of an airbus A319 running off the end and falling 75 feet off a cliff killing multiple people, the airport was closed for about a year.
In 2005 they decided to lengthen the 1.3 mile runway to about 1.7 miles cutting out multiple houses, elevated ledges and cliffs, and even moving a highway back so it could accommodate medium sized jets.
The primary airline jet used to fly in and out of this airport are Boeing 737-700 series with winglets.
This is a video of a united airlines 737 taking off after turning around on the single runway. As you can see the pilot slowly puts the thrusters up to 100% then let's off the brakes to catapult down the runway with about 75-100 feet to spare of runway after lifting off. The ascent is a ridiculous about 60 degree embankment to get over the mountain air stream then an almost immediate banked turn at about 50 degrees to avoid colliding into another mountain.
