I love how when he talks, it's not: "so like, when you wanna draw dis thing, like, you do a line like that, and then like, TRY to make it like dis" and instead has a planned and scripted breakdown of the lesson and not just improvising like most art UA-camrs do.
Most art youtubers aren't professional artists. Teaching is also a practiced skill that I feel like a lot of artists seem to ignore and think they can just teach as easily as they can draw.(Just look at the endless supply of incredibly bad unscripted but affordable gumroad videos even from professional artists)
Proko, moderdayjames and even some of sinix design videos all are scripted, high quality art lessons. You should check them out. Also there's a lot of great art tips out there so....
"Intuitive" artists who try teaching that way deserve to be kicked If you can't put your process into words you can still be a good artist but you shouldn't pretend to be a teacher
This is one of the reasons UA-camrs like Marco or Proko and a few others stand out. Knowing what you want to say in advance is critical to making an educational video that's exciting and engaging rather than boring you to death. Lot of people make videos with the best of intentions, wanting to help, but ending up spending 15 minutes to explain something that should take 15 seconds.
@D.A. Botos This is a comment being added in during the recording. he is not drawing and speaking at the same time. And you are very quick to criticize him.
Honestly you are one of the best art instructors out there. This content is rich with so many good pieces of information, theory, and practical tips. Thank you for taking the time to share with us your knowledge.
There are many good artists in this world, but very few good teachers. You are blessed with both. Thankyou for being an awesome teacher. Love from India
Last June I opened this video to study character design. As you said that gesture, form and anatomy were important, I left character design classes aside and studied these items. Now, after almost a year and a half of studying, I'm here again and everything you said in this video makes more sense than before. Thank you so much for your inspiring and detailed lesson =)
@@laylajameel1836 I spent 2022 studying anatomy. In 2023 I started some silhouette studies, values and perspective observation studies. I feel that my arts have more personality and life now, because thanks to the foundations, I have greater creative freedom and am not dependent on references. I started studying Blender this month (March 2024) to model and get help with more complex work.
I started my digital painting journey in 2020 and your channel was one I happened to watch. Now I am getting into character design and again I am here.
*Man this is gold.* My fav works from Rembrandt to illustrators like John Buscema, Noel Sickles, are pencil / pen sketches. You can see the raw mastery, feeling. I prefer rough sketches over colorful, finished work. Please keep doing these drawing videos, loaded with insight / information.
So... I just got into drawing after 12 years. Been playing around for a few weeks and I’ve been...happy, and but felt locked into what I was doing. I didn’t feel any progress. The simple practice of line of action is so much fun and has improved my sketches immensely. In fact the line of action sketches are better than anything I’ve done in the past. My attempts always lacked emotion and movement. Now, There are stories within one picture. Thank you so much for this homework.
Thank you dude! I’ve really been needing someone to go through and explain their process step by steplike this. It’s actually pretty unusual that someone does this, a lot of artist will speed paint at x1000 and talk about their process in a very abstract sense that feels more like a self-help guide for depression/anxiety but never really talk you through specific decisions they’re making and why. This was really useful to me.
This is so great! I missed you, man. And I'm sure Proko appreciates the shoutout. He's definitely improved my anatomy understanding and is an amazing resource.
oH mY GOSH for the first time i tried drawing with boxes to make things 3-d and EVERYTHING just came together like MAGIC!!! I knew i was missing SOMETHING but i never knew what!!!! THANK you!!!
I love how you comment on your drawing process! I haven't yet watched anyone doing this so well and detailed as you do. Most of the time, main principles will be explained but the character-BUILDING, the process, will not be explained. Great video! :D
Dude!! Why? I just took everything that I learned from Art School and threw it out the window. I learned more in 18 minutes. Priceless! You are a Master Instructor!!! Thank You!
I stopped drawing my own stuff years ago, my intuos pro is all dusty in her box. I have no idea why you was featured to me, but thanks god!!! Mr. Bucci: I have been watching your videos for a while, but kind of off and on. I came across your skillshare class (asaro head) and I thought it was the absolute best class on that website. I have watched that class like six times. And I often go back and study individual parts over and over again. I am honestly shocked to discover that the person who taught that class is YOU, the painter guy on UA-cam. You are an EXCELLENT teacher. It is delightful to discover that the two "great teachers" i stumbled across were actually the same person. THANK YOU FOR YOUR WONDERFUL CONTENT. Thank you!
15:39 Proko is like an angel that fell from the sky and blessed us all around. That mad man made a series of the anatomy and structure of bones & muscles so good that it rivals the Breaking Bad universe and at the end you can't do anything but feel pain that Skelly isn't going to appear in future videos.
I gave up on art when I was 10. Thanks to lockdown and videos like these, I've realised how much of a mistake that was. Knowledge and practice will beat talent every time. 🙂 Thanks for letting me take back art.

I AM CURENTLY IN CHARACTER DESIGN CLASS FOR MY 3D ANIMATION CARREER, PLEASE GIVE ME MORE!!! Seriously, this was one of the best videos i have ever since in my life about character design! take all my money Marco.
Great video! Interesting how you started with the gesture. I’ve typically started with the sillohuette just to feel out the shape language and sillohuette, but I definitely have been working in a more cartoony style. Inner starting with the gesture is a great way to feel out the acting/ expression range of the character. I’ll be sure to try this approach on my next project!
thanks a lot you are able to help those talented gifted ones who cannot afford to go to an art school to light themselves up! seriously u are an art God!... thanks a lot 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

I watch a LOT of drawing tutorials. This has to be one of the most in depth and informative ones I've ever seen! I cannot believe you're just giving this away for free?!
Thank you! Especially for showing your process from Gesture through Form. So many art vids I see start right on Form, but god that's hard to do unless you already know how to do it. Going from gesture through boxing in the silhouette was exactly what I needed to see to figure out what I need to do!
Your lessons are always amazing. There are so many valuable information and i like the way you deliver it - clearly and get straight to the point. Thank you so much for provide us such awesome videos. I'm really really grateful !

Hey Marco, long time clicker-of-your-videos - the brush you use for your gesture here at 00:53, what's the deal? I've seen a lot of people around artstation etc using what looks very similar, I can't really make out what is different about it. It looks almost like it's "doubled", or something. Thank you!
As I was watching the development of the character, I had some thoughts: Why would a guy that big, need to hold the sword (looks like a katana) with two hands? I liked the imposing aspect of the character. Love how you approach the design from the energy and essence of the character. so motivating.
Amazing video as always. You helped me progress my art so much since I started watching your videos. I feel like I am painting way more conciousely now, since I don't have to rely on intuition as much anymore.
Thank you so much! You make difficult concepts easy to understand, and it's so much fun just to learn from you. Watching your videos make me excited to try new things. All the best!
