    Sir Topham Hatt AKA The Fat Controller: Those Old Brake Vans have been retired, it should be converted into Workshops with Tools and Storage Sheds! The New Brake Vans and Sodor Cabooses would be here soon!

    I think the current format works fine and your video diary will make a valuable archive for any other wagon restorers.

    The current format is ok, to my eyes and ears! I'm watchng a similar almost total rebuild of a WW2 wooden boat that is lying in the mud in the Dee estuary, the couple doing that are also having to undetake major carpentry and engineering work to restore the boat to seaworthy conditions. If you are interested, look up Ship Happens. You have one big advantage, though - you don't sink in the mud every time you go outside to do anything!

    Since your replacing the bottom boards consider plastic lumber no rot or a lot of preservative that's non acidic to save the steel and I love seeing multiple projects in 1 video

    I enjoy the format just as it is, so ,for me personally, no change is required.
    Also glad to know I'm not the only person who chops and changes between meters and centimetres and Feet and inches, whichever measurement is spit on or easiest to remember that's what I use

    • @WardleRestorations
      @WardleRestorations  Рік тому

      Haha literally whatever measurement is closest is the one I will use, just makes the most sense to me but perhaps a tad confusing for those listening!

    Keep going as you are. Nothing wrong with the format.
    1. You won't find any of the timber the same size as it is probably made to inches and not millimetres. As you've suggested, just go with what's closest otherwise you'll be asking a machine shop to push you out bespoke size T&G boards.
    2. Whatever you decide to use for framing try and find good close grain timbers and treat them well with wood treatment and primer and undercoat BEFORE covering them over with boards
    3. As it won't be seen behind the T&G maybe buy some Tyvek sheeting to staple to the outside frames and overlap to stop the weather getting in in future.
    4. When you get the T&G boards, take them inside somewhere warm first and ensure air can circulate around them, keeping them off the floor and flat (check UA-cam for storing planks of wood) treat them and paint them first BEFORE fixing them. If you fit the boards straight away and they are swollen with moisture you'll find come summer they will shrink and the T&G boards will be too gapped!
    5. Do not use plain steel screws for the boards they will rust, use zinc treated screws and countersink your holes in the boards. Top tip, when screwing the screws into the frames use a bar of soap to load up the threads, it makes them drive in easier and reduces the risk of snapping the heads off in the colder weather.
    5. If you want anymore tips or advice phone me bud. Happy to help you as always.

    • @WardleRestorations
      @WardleRestorations  Рік тому +1

      Firsty, fantastic suggestion with the Tyvek, i will get some or something similar as as soon as the T&G is ready to be added to the outside! All the wood is stored in the workshop until ive treated it, and yes the exterior screws is another good idea. Glad you like the format!
      Secondly, youve only been subbed for a month :O

    Ollie. In my opinion your video content is spot on. As I’ve said before, my enjoyment is the renovation, muck and all. Not once have I been bored by the content. I would of preferred a proper canvas roof, as I do think the roofing felt is not going to last very long, but apart from that you are doing a fine job.

    • @WardleRestorations
      @WardleRestorations  Рік тому

      Really can't thank you enough for the kind words. Without giving too much away, once the brake is done, the roof will be completely stripped and replaced with a proper canvas. Roofing felt will see it through the next few years.

    What a fantastic video title! I wonder who made it?
    In all seriousness though, I do quite like the current 20 minute-ish format. As much as I’d like to see a bit more of the Box van, I think it’s best to keep going and get the Brake done first, as people may be more interested in watching what you do with the Box Van once they’ve seen good results from the Brake van project. As much as the drop in views at the moment isn’t great, it may allow you to grow more in the long run.

    • @WardleRestorations
      @WardleRestorations  Рік тому

      I really want to make some more progress with the box van but I’m at such an important stage of the brake van at the moment, I’m thinking maybe get one side done then do a bit on the box van, then do the other half of the brake! And yes the titles great 👀😂

  • @ModelTrainOutsider

    Great video, Ollie. Yes, there was a lot of off-camera tedious work. Been there, done that... many, many times in demo-work. I personally like these videos. Can't speak for the greater audience. I think viewership slowly going down is more that a LOT of folks are getting back to work, finding their more-specific channels and cutting back on YT viewing. I just retired, but I actually have less time to watch YT because I have a grandson who likes to keep me busy. Anyhow... make it for you and hope for the best!

    • @WardleRestorations
      @WardleRestorations  Рік тому

      Yeh that’s true, I’m sure people have far better things to do then watch this garbage 😂 hopefully the numbers will slowly increase with time. Glad you’re enjoying though mate and thanks for the support, it’s much appreciated!

  • @peterjackson-cheadleheath1182

    Hi Ollie The Brake van is really coming along nicely, these things do take time and lots of hard tedious work that isn't particularly 'interesting' to perhaps certain groups (other groups might be very interested though, lol). Personally I would like a maybe a slightly longer video (maybe 30 mins?) but I understand that will also take more editing time, especially as now you will no doubt have other things which will take up your time at home etc. Otherwise, for me, yes I like these videos (either Brake van or box van are you working on both??). Great stuff and as someone else said, it makes a valuable 'archive resource' or the future. Excellent work once again sir! Do carry on. Thanks

    • @WardleRestorations
      @WardleRestorations  Рік тому +1

      Hi Peter, I may try a slightly longer video at some point and perhaps see what the feedback is like from that, I don't want to bore people to death but I do think a longer video will be worth trying.Glad you've been enjoying the series and hopefully there's plenty more content on the way!

    I will carry on watching your videos as I find them very interesting . Personally I would like to see videos weekly , 30 minutes or more duration and a bit more detail . Had you thought about asking viewers with the appropriate skills if they were interested in helping out sometimes .

    My thoughts re episodes are to keep them coming more regularly, if you have too larger gap I think viewers lose interest as we assume nothings happening. I guess that will mean slightly shorter videos. Cheers

    • @WardleRestorations
      @WardleRestorations  Рік тому

      I will try turn the videos round as quickly as possible, I was more worried that doing them too frequently meant people get bored of seeing them so often, thanks for the feedback.
