  • Darwyn Cooke is an interesting guy. Upon initially meeting him I was sure he was an ex CIA field agent.
    He's a really sharp fellow and you can feel the passionate anger in his voice about how the industry is going south and you can hear his hopefulness as he discusses the literal wave of the future of On-Line comics.
    For More Darwyn Cooke - Check out his website HERE!
    P.S. I also told Darwyn he was one of my least two favorite artists. Probably not something you should say to someone your going to interview, but he actually thanked me for being honest. Stay tuned to find out who the other of the two of my least favorite artists are in a future interview. Here's a hint, his name is Tim Sale!

    I think that there's also a place in comics for sophistication and more complex stories, but I think that this world has lost not just a great artist, but a conscience of the Industry. RIP Darwyn Cooke

      There is, in other genres. Everyone would rather reinvent existing characters snd other writers take on them to make the stories they see fit....when u can just make up ur own characters nd tell us story

      Here, here! In the 90s, comics abandoned the Young Readers, esp Young Boys. AND then, they abandoned Western Civilization, and Virtue.

      There is a PLACE, but they should be the EXCEPTION and not the RULE. If kids aren’t allowed to watch superhero fiction, then it is only a fad

    I was there but like he always did he went strong I still remember when I met him first at TCAF I miss him but you can't stop what the world does. we used to colour in hello kitty books and we would go to Tampa Bay. and clearwater beach, once we went to Disney I will never forget him.

      In my opinion, it was the antithesis to watchmen. Watchmen deconstructed the superhero genre, a new frontier build it back up.

    Good interview. Speaks the truth for all of us clowns who are just trying to make comics for fun and for storytelling.

    The sad thing is, both TDKR and Watchmen were supossed to be a boost to the comic book industry. But most "creators" completely misunderstood what these books were about.

    I can only imagine what Darwyn thought about The Boys.

    I think he was off about digital. But he was dead on about writing for young kids, making adventures, and featuring virtuous heroes.
    And you have to get back on the spinner racks at eye and hand level of every kids who walks into any store. You have to make exciting comics with exciting covers, with good stories that they want to read more of, at a price that allows impulse buying, and content that will not make any parent regret letting their child read it.

      If you wanna get in front of kids today then digital is the way to go. The whole thing is still being figured out so I don't think he's off. It's just not going to happen overnight. I heard that 50% of comics sold in North America were digital. That's today, while they're still in an imperfect form. Print isn't going anywhere, though. Not in this industry.

      Disagree about yr take on digital

    • @Joemantler
      @Joemantler 3 роки тому +2

      @@reanetsemoleleki8219 Digital, like Direct Market, is something people have to actively search for. Putting things on Spinner Racks gets to their eye and hand level every time they go to the store.
      As to 50%, judging by the condition of the comic industry, that doesnt seem that great.

    • @Joemantler
      @Joemantler 3 роки тому +1

      @@CikisHelyzet Are you talking to me, or Reanetse? Either way, you are allowed to disagree. Hell, go out there and revitalize comics with digital, and I'll say "Gee, I was wrong. Way to go."
      I'm not anti digital. I just think it is a leaky life boat that isnt really going to save squat.

    • @CikisHelyzet
      @CikisHelyzet 3 роки тому

      I was referring to your comment about digital vs. spinner racks. With all due respect, we have opinions and that doesn’t make any of them right or wrong. Nothing against tangible reading, or visual mediums, but the reality is that the internet is now considered an essential service. Many official govt, and institutional materials are only available digitally. Shops are moving to cashless, (pre-pandemic). Whether we want to embrace digital as the focal point or not, it is massive in our lives. Young people cannot reference life without it. Kids are given iPads before they are given books. I’m not going to say you are wrong, I will simply say, to deny reality in favour of ideals, and dismiss how critical digital media is to kids, is to get left behind. Paper based products are niche with young folks. These are kids interested in film photography, and typewriters... they are not the majority. We have to evolve with technology if we want to reach them. This is THEIR medium from the cradle.

    What would even possess you to say that to him? Didn't your mother ever teach you about not having nice things to say? There's honesty, and there's being tactless. Clearly, you are the latter.
