Catching up with Adam at HEROES was fantastic! We talked about his work (coming back to interiors) on Before Watchmen and mostly about the controversy involved with the book and the other writers and artists. It's an extremely interesting interview and I was very humbled to get the scoop on the prequel (as it were) on one of, if not, the most famous graphic novel of the last 30 years. We also d...

The man was a legend.
It’s a traditional eastern brush grip, the correct grip for using ink brush that’s been the eastern masters’ technique for more than 1000 years.
“Like a chimp” 😆
I can only imagine what Darwyn thought about The Boys.
badass
I cant believe this was ten years ago sounds like he is talking about today
Man, I miss him and his art.
I love this comic. I have the entire Omnibus
absolute genius
Reminds me of Marty Friedman's picking style when he plays guitar. Definitely unorthodox
Imagine being so full of yourself that you confess on a YT post that you insulted Cooke. Hard to believe.
That's just comicbook purists for you. The most stuck up assholes you can ever meet on earth. Coming from someone who is also a Comic fan. With first hand experience from these absolute assholes. In fact it's because of them that me and a shit ton of others never pick up Comicbooks in the first place. Unless you're lucky like I was and finally managed to find a decent facet of the community to coax you into the light per say.
Her grandfather drew like Michelangelo.

Also if anyone is interested, i'm making a fancast, if Amelia Rules (even though, it's unlikely) ever has a live action movie or a live action tv series (netflix or something else). Here's the link: @t
The sad thing is, both TDKR and Watchmen were supossed to be a boost to the comic book industry. But most "creators" completely misunderstood what these books were about.
She is one smart cookie. All the best for her future. She is her own woman. BRAVO!
I was there but like he always did he went strong I still remember when I met him first at TCAF I miss him but you can't stop what the world does. we used to colour in hello kitty books and we would go to Tampa Bay. and clearwater beach, once we went to Disney I will never forget him.
Bless you. Hope you are doing well, today. His work and words continues to inspire us all.
he was my uncle
He was a great artist. I loved Batman: Ego.
He was a great human I knew through work. He still is your uncle and will literally never be forgotten. 🖤
That is so cool and awesome!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Matilda!
Fast forward to 2020...
I liked the New Frontier. That was such a good story.
In my opinion, it was the antithesis to watchmen. Watchmen deconstructed the superhero genre, a new frontier build it back up.
Her covers for Sonja and Vampirella are amazingly good. I wish they had art statues/figures of them.
It is indeed interesting how times have changed and how self-publishing comics--and books--has evolved. I do appreciate the fierce love of independence in this segment.
Wasn't expecting that voice.
I think he was off about digital. But he was dead on about writing for young kids, making adventures, and featuring virtuous heroes. And you have to get back on the spinner racks at eye and hand level of every kids who walks into any store. You have to make exciting comics with exciting covers, with good stories that they want to read more of, at a price that allows impulse buying, and content that will not make any parent regret letting their child read it.
If you wanna get in front of kids today then digital is the way to go. The whole thing is still being figured out so I don't think he's off. It's just not going to happen overnight. I heard that 50% of comics sold in North America were digital. That's today, while they're still in an imperfect form. Print isn't going anywhere, though. Not in this industry.
Disagree about yr take on digital
@@reanetsemoleleki8219 Digital, like Direct Market, is something people have to actively search for. Putting things on Spinner Racks gets to their eye and hand level every time they go to the store. As to 50%, judging by the condition of the comic industry, that doesnt seem that great.
@@CikisHelyzet Are you talking to me, or Reanetse? Either way, you are allowed to disagree. Hell, go out there and revitalize comics with digital, and I'll say "Gee, I was wrong. Way to go." I'm not anti digital. I just think it is a leaky life boat that isnt really going to save squat.
I was referring to your comment about digital vs. spinner racks. With all due respect, we have opinions and that doesn’t make any of them right or wrong. Nothing against tangible reading, or visual mediums, but the reality is that the internet is now considered an essential service. Many official govt, and institutional materials are only available digitally. Shops are moving to cashless, (pre-pandemic). Whether we want to embrace digital as the focal point or not, it is massive in our lives. Young people cannot reference life without it. Kids are given iPads before they are given books. I’m not going to say you are wrong, I will simply say, to deny reality in favour of ideals, and dismiss how critical digital media is to kids, is to get left behind. Paper based products are niche with young folks. These are kids interested in film photography, and typewriters... they are not the majority. We have to evolve with technology if we want to reach them. This is THEIR medium from the cradle.
Mack's got the NIN shirt on and the guy asks him what music he likes. Still won't tip his hand about the music he likes. I love it ;)

I used to like Larsen, until I found out how much of a liberal dick he is.
My names Darwyn
I can guess that most people who think this is "weird" haven't taken a sketch class. It's a pretty regularly suggested grip. Doesn't work for everybody, but some people swear by it. It's supposed to help remove some of the jitter from lines, and help make smoother curves.
I've seen people recommend holding it kind of horizontally to the page, never seen this grip before. Honestly, my policy is just "use whatever works." I wouldn't mind trying this one out one day, lol.
in the first two seconds he drew a ridiculously amazing eye
how about Shang Qi?
She's also the great niece of Sal Buscema.
Sal's work was..... not that great. I guess he got the amount of work back in the day most probably because he could deliver it on time. John Buscema is a huge Marvel comics legend. There's a crossover involving Thor and the Silver Surfer which I think is simply amazing. Stephanie's got her own style - a lot more colorful and perhaps geared to a younger audience (I guess - I might be wrong).
@@mottahead6464 Love Sal also.
Sal drew a better Spider-Man than John ever did, I'm a fan of them both.
I cant wait too see more of her work
RIP
This guy was awesome! What a loss.
may he rest in peace thanks for sharing your talent with us
Good bye Darwyn. Thanks for recording this for posterity.
Rest in Peace Legend. You're in a better place now.
I'm sorry. I loved darwyn. got to know him well after that. it was a joke between him and I, and Bruce timm, who also jokingly fell in that category. but yes, you're right. a tactless move. I loved darwyn and am so sad about his death.
What would even possess you to say that to him? Didn't your mother ever teach you about not having nice things to say? There's honesty, and there's being tactless. Clearly, you are the latter.
RIP Cooke. Gutted. He died too soon, just like everyone else this year.
Right as always.... :( I loved his work, his view on comics. RIP Darwyn Cooke
I think that there's also a place in comics for sophistication and more complex stories, but I think that this world has lost not just a great artist, but a conscience of the Industry. RIP Darwyn Cooke
There is, in other genres. Everyone would rather reinvent existing characters snd other writers take on them to make the stories they see fit....when u can just make up ur own characters nd tell us story
In real life Darwyn was just as great a human.
Here, here! In the 90s, comics abandoned the Young Readers, esp Young Boys. AND then, they abandoned Western Civilization, and Virtue.
There is a PLACE, but they should be the EXCEPTION and not the RULE. If kids aren’t allowed to watch superhero fiction, then it is only a fad
Excellent! Several times I have wanted to demonstrate Erik's grip to someone but never had a good example. How was I missing this the last few years?! =oD
Loved the way he drew Spider-Man!!!
That Grip is bad ass lol
Take all the time you need to work on this book Jeremy, I'm not going nowhere :)
Wow, this was awkward. The way he's very careful to state he likes only Sim's early work, the glances he keeps giving the cameraman; the way he looks away quickly when he's told 'Thank you' and realises he doesn't have to give an opinion on Sim's later career or socio-political views.
Love This Guy!
