    Alrighty everyone! I’ve been saving this video for a while.
    I didn’t get to go all out like I wanted to but I’ve added a few new small details to the video so let me know what you think!
    Tyler’s bachelor party was in early September of 2023. We had originally planned to do the Smokey Mountain 500 but the timeline wasn’t going to work out with work and life. Instead, we switched our plans to Windrock Park in Oliver Springs, TN.
    The four Florida boys departed on Thursday night and arrived at Windrock in the early hours of that Friday and I arrived in the mid afternoon. Joel, Brandon, James and Myself split the cost of a cabin so that we could live in luxury during Tyler’s bachelor trip. Tyler and I had originally been roommates in college so being back to sharing a bunk bed set up felt strangely comforting, haha.
    On Friday, the five of us got out to explore a bit. We ended up on some really technical, challenging trails filled with giant boulders and the slickest mud pits I’ve ever experienced.
    On Saturday, we had breakfast courtesy of Joel. We got our gear ready and rolled out fairly early. The park was busy with an over-landing event and a SXS event. We ran into some traffic towards the beginning of our ride but after that we never really saw anyone.
    We rolled a variety of terrain on trails that led us to some fantastic pavement with long winding switchbacks. The pavement brought us down the mountain to Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary, a former prison that’s now a museum with its own distillery.
    We snapped a quick picture at the jail before hopping back onto the pavement. We rode a ways out before jumping back onto trail. Once we were back on dirt it got extremely technical very quickly.
    The large, loose rock gardens quickly became the slickest mud pits and ruts I’ve ever ridden through. Not only was I struggling to find traction but the slope became too much for the bogged down XR150. It must have been around 30% at its steepest. Tyler and James gave me a push and I was back on the throttle and made it to the top of the hill.
    We trudged our way back to the cabin for a late afternoon lunch. After eating, Tyler, James, Brandon and Joel decided to go scout some more difficult trails. I opted to hang back as I was still recovering from the thrashing I got on the XR. About 10 minutes went by when I suddenly heard Tyler come roaring back. He had a flat and decided he’d just come back and hang out and change the tube for Sunday's ride.
    Another hour or so went by when Tyler and I heard the news about Brandon’s bike. He had snapped the shift shaft off on a double black diamond trail and was forced to hike an hour out of the woods. By the time he got back to camp it was dark.
    We heard from a ranger that stranded vehicles have a habit of going missing in those woods at night and so we opted to try and rescue the bike. With some help from our side-by-side neighbors we were able to weave our way up to the bike. James and Brandon came up with a temporary fix and Brandon was able to ride it out in the dark. With some patience he nursed the bike back to the cabin and all bikes were now accounted for.

    That is so typical of one of our trips, but usually on snowmobiles, very low on gas, -15* below zero, at bar close.
    Adapt and overcome. Eventually it becomes funny, right?

    That should silence the critics. The little Honda that could.

      @@OffRoadRodeo Not sure anyone should expect mechanical problems, it's a Honda! Especially a low compression ratio one. I remember reading the warranty for my new 1983 XR200RD. They only covered the bike for races up to 72 hours duration. Would not have thought it was covered for any races.

    Reminds me of when you were little and rode the 50cc quad through the entire atv park. You were under powered and had little to no suspension. Very similar to the terrain i had some trouble with at Bald Eagle.

      Haha, yes that’s very true. That was a wild ride too.
      We had opposite problems! You needed a lighter bike that was more nimble for Singletrack and I need something bigger with more power 😂

    Awesome video! We did about half of the SM500 with our XR150L’s. They are reliable and capable bikes IMO. What size front tire did you choose for that 244 tire? Our stock tires are getting a little worn.

    • @OffRoadRodeo
      @OffRoadRodeo  9 місяців тому

      The XR is fantastic. That’s awesome you did part of SM500 with it. I’m planning to do that with mine in the spring!
      I used a 2.75x19 front and a 4.6x17 rear. I think you might be able to squeeze a 3.0 front in but I’m not positive and haven’t tried. The 244’s were pretty great for this and I’m happy with the life I get out of them!

      @@OffRoadRodeo Thanks for the reply on sizes. We were time limited so couldn’t do all of the SM500 but did hit about half of each section over a few days. I have run 244’s for years and like them also for my normal daily use. A skid plate is recommended. Don’t go alone (2 person minimum to be safe as it’s pretty remote). Have good off-line navigation resources also.

    Funny thing. Those 'trails' are less rough than what folks ride scooters on here in SE Asia. The XR150 is capable of a lot more than what you're riding in on in this video.

    That bike looks impressive.
    The weight limit on the bike is 341 lbs. How do you think it would be with a 300lb rider (I am tall)? I have a XR 650 R and it is way too much bike for me to handle.
    I am beginner level I don't need fast.

    • @OffRoadRodeo
      @OffRoadRodeo  5 місяців тому +1

      Good question! What kind of riding are you doing? Will you be commuting or riding off-road? Whats the terrain like where you are?
      I’m 6’2” and about 190lbs. There’s lots of hills and steep roads here in Asheville and for the most part the XR tackles it all quite easily. The highest speed limit on any of the B roads here is 55mph, and so the XR keeps up with traffic just fine. Off-road I have no issues with it other than for extremely steep terrain where it could benefit from another few HP.
      I think if you’re just commuting and it’s fairly flat you’d probably be okay, but you’d have to keep in mind how much gear you have with you.
      But the XR has been a great bike and it’s been extremely reliable and durable.

      Awesome! I got an xr150 a back in September, but after calling around a few times, seemed like getting decent tires were going to be a problem. Encouraging to hear you got a a set that fits.
