Wildfires continue to burn in British Columbia, Northwest Territories

- Officials in western Canada are hoping to gain some ground on Sunday in their battle against raging forest fires. But hundreds of fires are still threatening communities throughout the region, with thousands of people forced out of their homes.
Officials are warning the worst of this wildfire crisis may not be over.
At last count, almost four hundred fires were burning in the forests of British Columbia, almost 160 of them out of control, many of them near communities like Kelowna.
Tens of thousands of people have been forced to evacuate.

Catastrophic situation. Feel so bad for all the folks who have had to leave, not knowing if they’ll have a home to go back to. And a big thanks to all those who are fighting the fires, and those supporting them, as well as folks manning shelters, feeding and helping out with evacuees.
Don't worry the investors are probably already trying to buy their homes for pennies on the dollars. Those 15-minute-cities won't build themselves.

I live in British Columbia and there was a red sun yesturday and it smelt like fire today and yesturday praying for me and B.C.

i live near Vancouver and the air health risk has only been at 2 for these last couple of days, but last night i watched the sun turn a bright shade of red while it was going down. it was scary. it almost looked like a blood moon. that just goes to show you how much smoke must be in the air yet not quite reaching us in the city. we've been really lucky for now,

these fires aren't out of control they're in control and only a significant rain event will put them out, the best defence is an early and voluntary evacuation
these fires have been *OUT OF CONTROL* and they will continue to be so until they're snuffed out completely. for god sake, the air quality is rated a *10* in the air quality index for Kelowna and people are getting sick because of it. how insensitive can you be?🤦🏻♀️

Im glad theres been no fatalities due to this. Huge commemoration for all the firefighters working day and night to control the flames. As well as anyone involved, I can't imagine leaving my home to potentially come back to a wasteland. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you

My name is Stef and my husband Jorne and I own a home at the end of Meadow Creek road in Celista BC. The fire department and forestry lit a back burn around 4pm on Thursday Aug 17th knowing there were 30km winds coming. No news outlet is talking out this. My husband has been monitoring the winds and the Adams creek fire for weeks. On Tuesday Aug 15th we knew the winds were coming. The fire was approx 15km away from us. We don’t know who decided to light a back burn knowing the wind forecast. They lit a 14km back burn right to our back door and never notified us. My dad who lives in Kelowna knew about a “out of control back burn” before we did. They didn’t even come to tell us. They notified the locals by posting it on a piece of paper at the gas station.
At 845pm we saw the fire just over the ridge. And by 12pm it had reached meadow creek road and was in back yard. Without the back burn we could have had a whole day to prepare. We did have sprinklers up, water tanks loaded and generators ready to go. We knew we were pretty much on our own and would not receive much help. The fire department did come down the road and were there briefly. Once they deemed the fire out of control they left. When the fire came into the valley we watched it burn up the sides of the mountain due to the humidity dome created with all the sprinkler and water. The fire department abandoned us. About 2 hours had passed when some locals came down our valley with resources and help. I was notified the fire department was sitting in a field having coffee so I went t to get them. When I got there I asked them to come help us, told them the situation. One of the firemen told me they wanted to help but had orders to sit. I yelled at them to get in their trucks and come help us. They said they would. I went back down the road to notify our crew they were coming. I sat and waited but no one came. About 15 minutes had gone by so I went back up the road and found them sitting about 1km away. They told me they were assessing the situation. I asked how they could assess if they couldn’t see it? I again asked them to come help and they finally did. Everyone ran around putting hot spots out. We wore water packs and half masks with headlamps for the next 3 days making sure our houses made it through.
In the initial days after the “superfire” the locals were able to get water, gas and supplies but now there is a heavy police presence. They have the roads blocked off saying they are preventing looting. The locals are being told to return to their homes. They are not allowed to be helping at all. There are spike strips on the roads. Police blocks everywhere. There are people trying to get essential supplies in such as water, gas and food by boat. They are being turned away. Police are patrolling the roads and water. They have the gas stations blocked off.
We need the real story to get out so we can get help.
We are more than equipped to help put this fire out but are being stopped. We need resources such as gas, diesel to keep us going. They’re trying to starve us out so they can let it burn.

Someone pointed out a few years ago that many of the west coast wildfires were occurring in the same spots as dormant volcanos. Now that more data has been collected, it appears that subsurface magma movement is responsible for simultaneously igniting all these forest regions at once.

It’s more a matter of scale and priority. First priority is people and trying to put out fires closest to settlements. There isn’t enough firefighters to fight them all, since even one first is massive and there are literally hundreds, which is the issue of scale. They are fighting what they can but they can’t fight all of then

A town should not embrace pine, spruce and fir trees to an extent that they form a grove adjoining forest. When coniferous trees, aka turpentine bombs, are permitted to establish themselves in town nature takes its usual course and consumes them with fire. Aspen, birch, alder and cottonwood take the place of pine on soil cleansed by fire and fertilized with ashes. Mature trees should not be left standing and should all be cleared out and replaced with new plantings when land is developed and homes are built.
There are some who are self-serving that passionately resent the use of a land, by citizens, that was not promised to them and whose ulterior motive in seeking public office is to curb this practice. The greater the amount of land that is required, the farther it is removed from use. Forested land may not be disturbed no matter how much of a hazard it poses to neighbouring habitations.
The detrimental effect of placing a halt on the use of land includes homes consumed by fire, home prices skyrocketing beyond reach, rents that exceed incomes, a growing financial gulf between property owners and the remainder measured in millions, desperation and homelessness.

One spark from lightening or a power line could result in all of Arbutus Ridge burning to the ground.
Well trouble with that is Canada being 2nd biggest country in the world and most is completely covered with boreal forests that are inaccessible it's the soft woods spruce jackpine and balsom and tamarak plus hard woods birth poplar and thousands of lakes when these fires get going it's unfightable if you have ever been close to a wall of 70 to 80 foot high spruce or jackpine flames from bottom to top seen some a mile long so hot with sap you can't get near them planes drop water but so hot evaporates before doing anything and there lies trouble anywhere you build in Canada your going to have these forests except southern part of prairies just today in northwestern Ontario we have over a 100 fires burning just in the northwestern part of Ontario which a lot of the country is wild boreal forests right up to James bay lowlands next to Russia we have the biggest amount of lumber going up it's crazy but we like it cause we can go out are doors and in an hour be fishing or hunting but we have to much forest which the world needs to keep us surviving thanks peace
I understand what you are saying. I grew up in the same situation. We had forest fires. Spruce would explode in a ball of flame from top to bottom. The practice was to clear land and then build structures. The reverse is the practice now with mature trees left standing in new developments that are wind and fire hazards. @@jsmmacdld3519
During the California fires few years ago the environment canada spokesman claimed that forest and fire management practices are largely to blame for wildfires then and yet to come.
