  • A few advanced tricks for the Sonicware Liven Texture Lab ("advanced" in the sense of requiring multiple steps to set up and doing some stuff that might not be obvious - not "advanced" in the sense of being like PhD in musicology synthmaster advanced). Note that I made a mistake in describing how pitching up and down by fourths and fifths work. See the values below for an accurate description.
Another video I mention in this one: • How to Make Ambient Dr...
    Parameter values I mention:
    Depth values for pitch:
Octave up or octave down: 64
Fifth up or fourth down: 37
Fifth down or fourth up: 26
    Depth values for speed:
    Octave up: 42
    Octave Down: 95
    Fifth up: 21
    Fifth down: 67
    Fourth up: 14
    Fourth down: 78

At around 8:08, I messed up my description of how fourths and fifths work with the parameter values. Check out my list of values in the video description to see how they really work.

Thank you! I'm just glad people aren't sick of the videos yet, although I'm going to have to pivot to something else at some point, because I can't just keep making Texture Lab videos forever...

agreed but better to know one device well then just be ok on ten devices creatively speaking@@SonicCartography

Thank you! I’m not sure, but I think it’s maybe because it didn’t get demoed or hyped up by many people with big channels much (there were a couple, but not that many).

The inability to switch off looping has to be an oversight though.

Yeah, I don't have another granular synth, so I'm not sure how it works on others, but from what I've read, my understanding of the Lemondrop Nanobox (the most similar competitor I can think of, although a bit more upscale) is that it has three options for playback: forward and then repeat from the beginning, forward and then go backward, and forward and then stop. I don't know much about the technical side of this stuff, but it feels like the second option (which the Texture Lab has) would be more difficult to pull off than the third (which it doesn't), so it seems like it should be possible. I think it would a good candidate for a firmware update, if they ever release one.

Question for the worlds leading expert on the texture lab (that’s you). You can release a held note (hold+key) by pressing that same key again. On my unit it will then also release all other held notes that are exactly an octave up or down from the to be released note. Is that your experience as well? If so, I’ll ask sonicware to fix that in a firmware update.

I don't know if I can claim to be an expert now, because I hadn't noticed that before! But yeah, the same thing happens to me if I hold two of the same note in different octaves. However, if I hold three or four of the same notes, all but one of them will be released. I can't figure out which one continues to get held; sometimes it seems to be the one last entered; other times, the one with the lowest octave. Weird... Anyway, good catch!

... so there is no envelope? That's a bummer.

There's attack and release, but it applies to the overall sound that's being generated, and that sound gets looped, if that makes sense. And no, it's not ideal - I hope they'll add an option to disable looping with a firmware update.
