Mapping out some sounds
Dream Machine | Sonicware Liven Ambient Ø | New Set of 36 Songs
I haven’t had time to make videos for my channel for a while because I’ve been making Ambient Ø tutorials for the @SONICWARE channel’s Beginner’s Guide series. In the meantime, I’ve been accumulating lots of songs and song ideas on the synth. This is a set of most of them (some in abbreviated form), which I’m releasing all at once to sort of “clear the vault” and feel like I can start afresh with making new music. Unlike the previous collection I did, this one contains some actual ambient music-particularly the middle section. I'm not totally happy with how some of these turned out, but I'm trying to learn how to not let the perfect be the enemy of the good (enough), so I'm just going to publish this anyway...

I’ve had the Sonicware Liven Ambient Ø for a couple of weeks now. At first, I made some ambient soundscapes, but then I started gravitating more toward short songs. The music felt like it had a futuristic, post-apocalyptic, cinematic vibe to it, and I started picturing things and inventing stories as I made it, and then the images and stories inspired more music, and a whole world began to mate...

How to Get a Beautiful Sound on the Sonicware Texture Lab - Cascading Notes Tutorial - Part 2 of 3
Can the texture lab be used as a midi to control sounds in the smpltrk?
Could you to a tutorial on the midi? I'm fairly confused on it as it's my first synth. Also great video👍
Thank you! I think it's a good choice of first synth! Is there a specific aspect of the MIDI you're wondering about? What are you wanting to do with it? (I'm asking because MIDI encompasses a very wide range of things!)
@SonicCartography I was thinking of pairing it with the arturia keystep yet don't know if I should buy it to use as a midi controller for the liven 8bit and other gear I may use to add.
@@user-fk5nb4vo7j ah, I see. I'll see if I can make a video on things like that at some point. I have a Keystep myself (the most basic model). To be honest, I've only used it with the Warps and other Sonicware Livens a couple of times. The Keystep seems more useful if you have a synth without a sequencer or arpeggiator, but the Livens have both already. I guess the main advantage is just having a more "proper" keyboard to play on, if that's important to you (personally it's not to me)-that and having a chord mode, which the Livens don't have.
@@SonicCartography ah ok thanks👍
Very interesting and inspiring tracks! Keep up the creativity!
Thank you! 🙂
Where are the sub titles. They really help me, even for a synth tutorial! Oh, and that's a cup of coffee well earned. Thank you.
Good question! I don't know why they aren't showing for this video. I'm going to look into it. Thanks for letting me know, and thanks for the support!
Well, I changed some setting that seems to have added automatically generated captions to at least a couple of videos that didn't have them, but there's still one that doesn't have it, which I don't seem to be able to do anything about. Apparently the system just gives up on trying to transcribe some videos for a variety of factors, like audio quality, background noise, etc.
Great stuff!
Thank you!
86 / 5.000 Great video, very helpful! Could you download the drum set as SYX? That would be awesome!
Thanks! Do you mean coud I share a .syx file of the drum loop I used in the video?
@@SonicCartography yes
I'm hoping to put out a video in a few days on how to import presets and samples, and I'll try to include that one with some files I share with it!
@@SonicCartography GREAT!
@ Top!
Wow
Really cool. Can it be tuned to 432hz? I have a a texture lab btw. It’s one of my favorite pieces in my studio
Hi, thank you, that was very helpful ! Oh, I have a question anout the SmplTrek ! Is it as good as a good reverb pedal, like a Specular Reverb or Big Sky for instance ? I know it is not its main use case, but if it could replace several pieces of hardware... :)
I wouldn't say the reverbs on the SmplTrek are on the same level as a standalone, premium reverb pedal like those. They're more utilitarian, comparable to the more basic reverbs on something like the Zoom Multistomp, I'd say.
@@SonicCartography Thank you for your reply :) !
@@Mahenounet you're welcome!
Omg, looks like a great piece of gear but I would be incapable of reading this screen at my age !
Yeah, the screen is small. Nintendo used to make a big magnifying glass accessory for the Game Boy. Somebody should make one for the SmplTrek.
Hi ! Thanks so much for your demos, tutorials & songs <3 May I ask a question ? You show it is possible to use the machine without the sequencer. To what extent do you think I could use it to play pads in (on the device) over a drone/noise without getting stuck in a given scale / progression ? Is it possible to play it 100% in realtime ? I see I can hold a chord / arp on a track, switch to another, play over it. Is it a viable way of using the device ? I'd have to get back & forth the different tracks constantly ? Take care & thanks again !!
You’re welcome and thanks for watching them! This answer always feels like a cop-out, but it feels unavoidable in this case: it depends… Specifically, it depends on how much and how often and in how many layers you’re wanting to switch things up manually (I mean through live playing of the keys). The more you do, the harder it becomes to accomplish, because the more you have to switch back and forth between layers to do it. Conversely, the less you do, the more doable it becomes, thanks to the hold function and arpeggiator (which can be combined with the hold function). I may cover some aspects of this in one of the upcoming videos I’m planning for my channel.
@@SonicCartography Thank you so much for your reply and your work in general <3
Thank you so much bro! This thing has kicked my butt trying to learn to use it.
Thank you-I hope it helped!
incredible. We start with river sound, and we've got kind of brass with waterdrop behind, to have industrial rythmic noise. and after, it sounds like trafic jam woith a bass synth. and then radio noise as frequence changing. to finally get some waving windy breath and ends with classiccal modern music form twentieth century. It' so surprising what a natural sound could become with the texture lab treatment. Thanks a lot for this video (and all the other on this instrument). And besides that, it should have been a relly beautiful travel in Pyrénées.
Thank you-I was pretty surprised by how many places the sample ended up myself! And yes, it was very beautiful-one of my favorite trips of the recent past!
Thanks, this video sold me. Can't wait! The sonicware site is offering it with a free power supply through the end of the month, so I got that deal.
Anyway: I subscribed to your channel because it's great. I also bought the 8bit and EZ1 after your tutorial. Sonicware should pay you.
Sorry for this off topic but I really need help! have a great problem with my Texturelab. I should have done something wrong while sampling and all the preset sounds from bank 2 to 8 simply disappeared. All the knobs repeat the last sample i took. This is because I sampled 33 sounds instead of 32 and I put the 33rd sample on bank 2. How can I reload the factory presets sounds? I tried a factory reset as in the manual but nothing happened. PLease help me! (happy xmas!)
Unfortunately, to regain the samples, you will need to import them from your computer via sysx files, which can be downloaded from here: sonicware.jp/pages/downloads
@@SonicCartography Unfortunately there is no sysex file for the texturelab on that page. Any suggestion?
Can you export them and send the sisex file to me. I can pay.
@@SonicCartography Please consider that I need to restore the factory sounds from bank 2 to 8 not the factory samples. Is there a sysex file? How should I proceed? Thanks in advance. If you need a payment for your help let me know....
Sorry, I’m not sure I understand… To make sure we are on the same page: There are 32 sample slots, accessed via the SRC knob on the far left. Then there are the patterns, accessed via the PTN button and value knob. You save samples to the sample slots, not the patterns, and the two things and their respective memories are independent of each other. The patterns are just sequences of notes and/or parameter data. They aren’t sounds per se; they are things you do *with* the sounds, which come from the sample slots. One of the pieces of parameter data in a given pattern is the sample slot it uses. Pattern X could be set to sample slot 1, for example. However, if you replace sample 1 with another sample, the pattern will now apply all its parameter and note data to that new sample and use it as its sound, since all it “knows” is that it’s using sample slot 1, whatever that happens to be. The underlying sound isn’t saved in the pattern; it’s saved in the sample slot. And so if the sound has changed, it sounds like you’ve replaced the samples, not the patterns, unless I’m completely misunderstanding you, in which case I apologize and need more clarification.
Thanks for this void, it's very clear and very useful. A,d it's cool to have the 7 steps in the description of the video. For my part, i can hear an kind of windy forest. It's very surpruising when i try the exercise to listen to your sound and wonder "what kind of image will come, what this sound remind to me". great vid.
Thank you! That's a nice image! There is something very visual to this kind of music. Sometimes I wish I could draw accompanying images, but I don't have visual art skills...
@@SonicCartography But you've got musical talent. That's great.
@@davidneau8830 Thank you! I suppose I should be grateful for what I've got!

@@davidneau8830 Thank you for the nice words!
Simply love these soundscapes and accompanying descriptions; did you write them? A book awaits! I’m showing this video to my grandkids. I’ve just bought this machine but cannot hope to accomplish this wonderful ethereal ambience. Thank you 😊
Thank you for the kind words! Yes, I wrote them. I've always had two main things I want to accomplish someday in life: write a book and record an album. Year after year goes by, and I don't do either, but this thing felt like the biggest step I've been able to take in that direction, so I appreciate you saying that! As for not feeling able to accomplish something similar, just make stuff and keep at it-I didn't really know anything about synths until a couple of year ago!
That's beautiful, how you start from piano sounds to go to strings ounds mixed with piano. I dopn't know why, whem I'm listening the osunds in the part before you use the pattern, I see snow on a large filed in winter. very interesting trio of video about cascading. Thanks a lot.
Thank you-I can see the winter scene as well!
Will this work on the Ambient Zero? Also, as an electric guitar’pedal’? Thanks 😊
You can mess with sound samples via the two LFOs and modulator on the noise layer of the Ambient, and I'm sure there are sorts of weird things you can do with them (I haven't tried that much stuff outside the box with it yet), but a lot of the stuff in this video is Texture Lab/granular-specific. Re: electric guitar pedal, sorry, I'm not sure I understand-are you asking if you can use the Ambient as a guitar pedal?
@ - Thanks; I meant to use the Ambient as an electric guitar effects box, like the pedal distortions produce 😊
@@gilessmedley619 Yes, you can plug a guitar into the Ambient via the line-in and apply the reverb, shimmer, and/or master effect (all three at once or any combination of the three). However, none of the other parameters apply to the line-in sound, so the possibilities are more limited than they are with the Texture Lab. I may include a demo of this in an upcoming video I'm going to do on channel about using effects with the Ambient.
@@SonicCartography - Thanks so much for the guitar information and I look forward to the video 😊🎸
it was a very good tip to take some note at different octave. This piano sample sounds beautiful, and the reversed version is so different. Thanks for this video.
Thank you-and yes, I really love the way the piano sounds on the Texture Lab!
Wow! You sold me
very cool
Fantastic sci-fi soundscapes - thank you 😊
Thank you for stopping by and leaving the nice words!
So I know you said it’s wired straight to the device itself but could you do it where it’s connected to a guitar amp?
Anything with a line out you can plug into the Texture Lab's line in. I haven't done it with a real amp, but I've done it with an amp sim pedal and various other pedals.
new way of using melodic sample by playing same note at different octave. It's very clever. And it works so well. and can become very crazy, like a spacehsip landing off. So cool. Thanks for this video.
Thanks for watching! And yes, this is one of my favorite things to do with the Texture Lab, especially with acoustic instrument samples, like the piano that I used in another part of this series.
I can't wait for this comes out
Oh, I thought it was out already!
@SonicCartography not around my area it's not
@@Matthew-pq3us Hmm, I have one, I've had it for a few months. I ordered it from them directly.
I noticed the table top- is it solid wood or veneer? Do you find the color of the background important? I noticed you centered the unit well- everything in its' proper place'- right? Is that important to you? Back to the table- is it actually a wall? It looks like the unit may be mounted vertically on a wall- not horizontally on a table. I have many more questions. 🙃 JK. Do these Sounds all come from the Liven Ambient?
Yes, I just recorded it directly to an audio recorder and didn’t do anything in post. Almost all of the songs make use of both the internal reverb and master FX (mostly delay). The underlying samples on the noise layer are all factory presets.
Thank you and great work!

it's a very useful tip to use one step of the pattern to record three octaves of your melodic sample and then play with knob. Very cool. Thanks for this vid.and the use of LFO is always interesting, making the sound more moving.
Thank you for watching, as always! And yes, it is a useful trick!
Awesome!! ❤❤❤
Thank you! 😊
So how do ya feel compared to the texture lab ? And I’m sure they make a good pairing
They're hard to compare because other than lending themselves to ambient being Livens, they're very different-the Texture Lab being a monotimbral granular sampler/synth with one sequencer track that you'd usually want to use in conjunction with other gear and the other being a multitimbral synth with four sequencer tracks that you can use as a standalone groove box.
@ yeah I have most the other ones but these 2 based off this response I’d probably go for the ambient 0 myself ty
It's probably the safer and more broadly useful pick-the Texture Lab is more niche!
I feel like the Texture lab is aimed to be more of an Effects unit as well. But I'm sure the ambient 0 does great at that too, especially if you can add the shimmer reverb to external sources
@ I love a shimmer is on this one ☝️
