- How joining the Olympic programme helped a niche pursuit go mainstream. Since making its debut in Tokyo, climbing has attracted corporate sponsors and professional investors looking to profit from the sport's rapid ascent. The effects are being felt at both the elite and grassroots level.

We apologise for Ryan Jones incorrectly being named Ryan Reyes at 00:00:33:13. UA-cam policy will not allow us to replace the video with a corrected version without losing all of the very valued comments which viewers have taken time to contribute. We apologise for the error and have corrected it where it is published on other platforms.
You also mispronounced Alex Honnold's name as Annex Honnold at 5:50.
They put Toby the Olympic Champion in at 5:23 just as if he was a random climber, luckily they gave him 3 sec afterwards 🤣
V2 in my gy.... oh wait it's FT
😂 fr
I think this video is more of a passion display rather than an analysis, which I expected when I clicked..
agree. no analysis of climbing as a spectator sport. e.g. have changes to more dynamic routes in recent years made it more watchable now?
What a coincidence … I’m thinking about visiting a bouldering/climbing gym this weekend to see if I can try it 😊
Go for it! I started climbing a few months ago and I've been super hooked since. Don't 'see' if you can try it, you CAN try it! I started only being able to do V1's and a couple months later I'm doing inclined V3's. It's buckets of fun and everyone I've met has been super friendly 😁
Do it, it's an excellent full body workout without feeling like you're doing a workout (until the following morning :) ). I've never liked normal gyms - they're just not welcoming to a newbie and you just end up looking like a hamster. :D
you won't regret this life changing choice
It's so easy to fall in love with climbing. It's a whole body workout and mental exercise too. I started two years ago and I'm completely hooked. Go for it!
your feel like you have had full gym work out without feeling like you have been to the gym until the next day.
Accessible, no ego like most sports, challenging and not based around talent and natural ability only. We have a climbing wall at school and kids love it.
Accessible?
No ego like most sports ?
@@paulmolyneux9503 I mean you don’t need to buy a lot of equipment like cricket or horse riding. Lots of climbing walls going up in schools and urban areas.
@@geoffrey955 it’s not about tricks and showing off or hurting people weaker than you if you can like football in pe.
@@kb4903 you need a TON of equipment, if your a gym goer sure but its definitely not a cheap sport if you even want to try outdoors.
I found preference towards climbing gyms than regular gym or regular exercise for the sense of community, no ego based, no aesthetics like how you look and at the same time I can hit my weights if I choose to.
Being a person with mental issues this helps me distress greatly and focus on the moment.
I’ve been slowly inviting my friends and coworkers so they can check it out as a way of appreciation.
Climbing/bouldering has become part of my routine and something I look forward to do everyday
Now I’m looking to get to do it outdoors going on trip with my climbing buddies :)
Free Solo is what got me interested in climbing. My first time in a climbing gym sold me. So colourful and a positive environment. My first climb got me hooked. I was so bad but up for the challenge to improve. The feeling of my body on the wall was compelling. I realised I wasn't as strong as I thought and my lifestyle needed to change. It has changed thanks to climbing.
@@danielparsons2859 same here. Watched Free Solo with my son 😱, and afterwards he says why don't you come climbing with me. I did and I'm hooked!
What about the V15 (V3 in my gym) pink in the corner?
these people are not gonna mention Magnus Midtbø
I was just going to say it's odd that they didn't mention the impact of climbing UA-cam over the past few years. Obviously Magnus, with over 2m subscribers, is the biggest channel & is credited with introducing many people to the sport but here in the UK there are several notable large channels. Wide Boyz, Bouldering Bobat, Catalyst Climbing, Hannah Morris & Dave MacLeod all have over 100k followers. Olympic champion Toby Roberts has his own channel, with c60k followers
Annex Honnold lets gooooo!
u should go to westway durimg the day during the week, its full of over 60s doing masses of climbing.. very inspiring.
It's one of those sports where you can even start late and continue for a long time. I didn't start until into my 50s and I've seen climbers well into their 70s sending routes I can't even get off the start of. 😲 Gives me hope for the future. 😁
westway is for alpha climbers though, not just your average corporate boulder bros going one a week on a wednesday
@@iR3vil4te I'm going to get a t-shirt that says alpha-climber, and wear it next time I struggle up a 6a on the auto-belay!
I was a stay at Home mom with no money in my IRA or any savings of my own, which was scary at 53 years of age. Three years ago I got a part time job and save everything I make. After 3 years, I am 56 yo and have put $9,000 in an IRA and $40,000 in my portfolio with CFA, Abby Joseph Cohen. Since the goal of getting a job was to invest for retirement and NOT up my lifestyle, I was able to scale this quickly to $150,000. If I can do this in a year, anyone can.
How can i reach her, if you don't mind me asking?
Well her name is 'ABBY JOSEPH COHEN SERVICES'. Just research the name. You'd find necessary details to work with a correspondence to set up an appointment.
Been debt free for two years thanks to Abby Joseph Cohen Services. So sad to see my friends in their 40s with car loans, mortgages and credit card debt.
Thank you for putting this out looked--up ABBY JOSEPH COHEN SERVICES, her consuIting page came up at once, she seems highly grounded
The thing is people often doubt the prospects of financial advisors like Abby Joseph Cohen in business/markets today.
Well it gives me more time to get ahead while they stew in their own pity and doubts as they childishly complain about those spreading the word
I have been climbing since the early 90s. It goes through cycles. In my city Naarm/ Melbourne the number of gyms goes up and down at a slight lag behind the popularity level. Being a glass half empty guy, I would advise anyone thinking of opening a new gym to be prepared for the next contraction phase to start pretty soon or to be able to differentiate your gym from the others. My regular gym caters mostly to long term climbers, who also climb outdoors and so are in it for life.
yeah, especially when a decent wall can cost $200k in holds alone. The wood walls and steel substructure are quite expensive as well. I built a roughly 9m^2 boulder wall in my basement. I did that so as to cut down on gym costs for myself, wife, and kids. I love it but I do miss the gym community. There isn't much around where I live for outdoor climbing.
@@1stGruhn It is a big start up investment. One gym on my side of the city shut down earlier in the year. While not a business person myself, it breaks my heart to see any business go bust. Straya has been hit by a big costs of living crisis this year and any business involving discretionary spending (cafes, restaurants, bars, gyms, even hairdressers) is feeling the strain. New businesses can never rely on getting good cash flow straight away.
We are really proud of our job with the Olympic walls, we hope everyone liked them.
We truly think climbing is for everyone. Give it a try! And if you are looking into opening your own climbing gym, give us a call. We can help with that.
Thank you! Help prosecute the people who frequent the backstage area teaching them how to mess up the world.
Now make tree climbing popular it is just as much fun and comes in a huge variety of forms from different tree species!
Pewdiepie made a video on climbing as well. I saw it after I had begun climbing by chance. Went to a climbing gym for fun with the wife and now we're both hooked. Its great fun, and as Pew said in his video, its kinda like a video game. Its a sport thats accessible to everyone, where you always feel like you could do better and there are levels.
I'm curious when we'll see climbing walls in schools. Something I would have loved when I was younger but only had a chance on a few rare occasions. It should be as accessible to kids as swimming in my opinion.
As a teacher, I can tell you they already are. 🤗
Our junior high had one already in 2002, crazy when I think about it.
I build the walls and agree. One of the fundamental human movements
My personal concern is that some local chains have spread themselves too thinly. I don't know the whole story behind it, but Arch are closing two locations (Acton and Burnt Oak) at the end of this month. Personally, I'd rather see one new climbing wall in London that was capable of hosting IFSC competitions than 10 new bouldering walls, but I know that the site selection and economics for that would be unfavourable.
Also, climbing still doesn't have quite as much £££ as other sports, and the national governing body (GB Climbing) hasn't been as adept at forming commercial partnerships as many pro climbers [which in turn means fewer funding opportunities for competition climbers at the grass roots level who aren't such big names], but as a regular climber you have a closer relationship to the brand reps / ambassadors / distributors than you do in a lot of other sports.
Also, really good for paraclimbing to get a mention and it will be much bigger in 4 years when it is on the Paralympics schedule for 2028!
We are a bit gutted about the Arch Burnt Oak closing. It was a very friendly place and had a truly interesting mix of people using it. EustonWall and HarroWall are good but not the same…
Shauna's comment are basically the same thing she said over and over on olympic broadcast.
I tried bouldering, it's not for me, but bouldering is a fun sport to watch!
You make it sound like climbing is a recent development. I do remember way back in 2000 climbing being part of the opening sequence of Mission Impossible 2 directed by John Woo. Tom Cruise being at the edge of a cliff, doing his thing, somewhere in Australia. And guess what, Tom Cruise was there for the closing ceremony in Paris 2024 Olympics
Climbing as a casual activity for a wide audience is definitely new. Back in the early 00s and 90s there were few gyms and the community was MUCH more tight knit and seen as an extreme sport, hence your mention that it was in mission impossible.
Cliffhanger (1993)?
That scene hooked me to climbing when I was a kid. Later I forgot all about it but meanwhile (33 yrs old) I am working on my first 7a Redpoint on a 20m route. Luckily there are some nice crags within 1 hour around my hometown.
Annex honnold lollllll
Davis Eric Perez Amy Garcia Jason
Why do climbing gyms charge so much though? Some of the bouldering places are extortionate and don’t even have aircon
So many reasons. For one, liability insurance. Two, holds are not cheap. Three, employees cost money. Four, rent.

I can just see it now a tonne of people getting finger injuries and all sorts of tweaks 🤣
Build gradually and properly. I have climbed 50 years with no injuries. Not so much for my running career 😭

yeah, i'll stick to climbing as sport and not become competiton oriented sports
In general, yes, it's climbing, but what you're showing and talking about is bouldering.
😂😂 FT readers + climbers are a real niche..

It's great, but also a bit sad. Get outside people! :)
It's a bit strange, either indoors or outdoors. 😄
They are losing everything.
I'm excited about the rise of climbing... but that's a boring video :)
