These advices are extremely useful and the kind that NO ONE tells u. You're 10x better than those "Business podcasters" or "Finfluencers" that are giving the same old tips over and over again because truth is, they don't know how to be successful without luck. You Derek actually give solid advice! Keep it up

I love your Spielberg references Derek, I quote them all the time since hearing you speak of it on your channel. When I decided I wanted to be a photographer in my chosen area of interest at 18, I had all sorts of different people telling me to do a million different things. Most of them were safe and what almost everyone else did. I looked at them and they just seemed like slow choices and ones that wouldn't challenge me. So I did it all myself and just started. Never looked back. Now sure, there are a bunch of mistakes and things I'd do differently along the way but there always will be if you're actually DOING IT rather than living in your ideas. But your sentiments here are just spot on. Go in a straight line!

Go for the thing you want.
This is a common thing with cooks. We often have to spend a day “trailing” or “staging” to prove to a potential employer that it’s a good fit, that we can cook, and that we can listen. Even as an executive chef no one is going to hire me if I don’t cook for them first.
This goes for gigs too. I often cook for clients to prove to them that what my team and I offer meets the hype. And then when we get the gig we go above and beyond. We make sure do exceed expectations for the tasting and then crush it during the event.
That’s how you get repeat clients in this competitive industry.

I have a question for you I'd love to see you do a video on! Lately I feel like everyone is doing the "same thing." Especially in the service based industry. Same sort of websites, same sounding sales pages and copy, same click funnels, same "here's a free guide/webinar/pdf/worksheet!" and I feel often like... how am I going to stand out? It may be because im surrounding myself with similar people because im trying to learn, so maybe it's more in my head that its "all the same" because im just living in that same world! Either way, how do you fight the idea of "everyone is doing this already why bother/what makes me different" and continue to strive?

    Initially...flew drones...for free.
Got in good with the right client (that - luckily - provided some nice, recurring jobs), created solid, edited footage, helped them set up the right social accounts and whatever else was necessary to get the videos exposure...& the references started multiplying.
    Picture me dronin' 😂

This is the same advice I give to people at work. DOn't wait to be told to do something. Don't just do what your job description says. Decide what you want to be doing in your career and reverse engineer that to the point where you are and GO.

Worked 3 days a week for free for 3 months to learn the business I'm in, got a job with the company I interned with 3 months and 1 day after I started because they knew what I could do. One of the highest paid employees in the company from the start.

Awesome! You're absolutely right Derek. You have to give before you can get.

I got my first client in my ideal industry by doing a sample mock-up to show what I could do. Totally worth it!

    Thanks for kicking my a$$!
I did several free websites and then low priced sites. After I got going I flat turned away those that said “I can’t afford to pay you but it could help your portfolio.” But those early projects helped build my confidence and experience.
I appreciate seeing your retake on the Spielberg line. 😋

WTF is a snuggy bunny? How do you take your coffee, Derek? Please don't smash your head into or destroy that awesome forest. *Sad destroyed forest face! Yep - Mindset - I'm working on it.....

We have time (make time) for what we want..
I have done MANY things for free - to build a portfolio.. some times it bites you in the ass. People keep wanting "free" - need to set terms / limits and have agreements in place.
Good stuff! Keep the videos coming.
    Peace,
    -Dennis

You get better at doind stuff by doing stuff, so it sounds just right to take a few shortcuts.

    Going to university, for example!
Yeah, I get that there are some careers that legitimately require that, but not everyone is aiming for those. Yet, university still continues to be an assumed prerequisite today.

I never done free work, still made tons of clients. Have some self respect. Encouraging people to slave themselves. This is Disgusting.
