    I remember riding on an excursion pulled by 614 from Baltimore to Martinsburg back around 1983. A very enjoyable trip. I miss those rail excursions from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

    I would buy this engine and restore it in the Greenbrier Presidential Express livery.

    That was the first operating steam engine that I ever saw, as it rushed through Hyattsville , Md back in 1980. I sure do miss the annual "Chessie Safety Express" excursions. The current CSX does not like that sort of thing at all. :-(

    I wonder, was this 614's original whistle during service? It was changed during the Erie Limited runs in '96.

    • @usernotfound77666

      This whistle is a K5LA 5 Chime

    • @howiesmith1504
      @howiesmith1504 Рік тому +1

      IIRC, the whistle was made specially from stainless steel for the Chessie Safety Express (Or was it for the American Bicentennial Freedom train? Don't remember now.) to match the chord tones of the K5LA air horn. Canadian whistle and horn expert Bob Swanson who invented
      the K5LA horn, was in charge. The whistle was personally paid for by Chessie's VP for safety.

    That whistle on Chesapeake and Ohio's Northern 614 suits perfect. If the 614 is ever going to be back on the tracks running excursions again, they also should use that whistle to. I'm sorry diesel fans, steam engines are much more popular to me. But, hopefully I'm not the only one.

      I've spoken with my good friend Ross Rowland, (the man who owns 614) and he says that in 2024 to 2026 he plans to run the American Freedom Train 2.0 and he plans to have 614 run again. But he needs 10 corporate sponsors to give i believe 10 or 100 million dollars.

    Why the SAFTEY express has a whistle that blows and 100% blocks the view of the engineer?

    so the 614 replaced the 2100 on these excursions in later years?

    • @SteamKing2160
      @SteamKing2160 7 років тому +3

      No, what happened was that the Reading 2101 suffered badly in a roundhouse fire in Russell, Kentucky prior to the 614's arrival. So 614 came to save 2101's bacon.

    • @JCBro-yg8vd
      @JCBro-yg8vd 4 роки тому +3

      2101, and not exactly. 2101 powered the Cheesie Steam Special that was meant to celebrate the 150 anniversary of the founding of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (which Cheesie owned and operated). Then after 2101 was burned in a roundhouse fire in 1979, 614 was swapped out to take 2101's place. As for the special, 614 was used to power Cheesie Safety Express which was a joint effort with Operation Lifesaver, aimed at reducing fatalities at railroad crossings. After 1981 though, Operation Lifesafer got jealous of 614 getting all the attention and used diesels instead.

      @@JCBro-yg8vd quite accurate representation. That's roughly what I've been told by Ross. 2101 was quite a showstar, its a shame she was damaged so bad
