By Trump's logic, I have a massive, massive trade deficit with Safeway. I buy all manner of goods from them, but they have purchased NOTHING AT ALL FROM ME FOR OVER 30 YEARS NOW!!! To fix this, I will now tax myself every time I buy something there. That'll show them who's boss!
But Safeway was never in a position to buy anything from you, unless you are a food producer or distributor. You are just the end user. China, can and does buy US made goods. Just not nearly as much as we buy from them. Plus, they do also cheat and steal ideas and don't honor patent laws or intellectual property. Case in point, you can see right now for your very eyes: www.kickstarter.com/projects/908228738/finalstraw-the-worlds-first-collapsible-reusable-s The Final Straw was a concept by this American based start-up. They ran a successful campaign, and have an innovative product. A foldable metal straw. Well, no sooner than a week after their campaign closed, were copycat products for sale on Amazon, straight out of China. Copied even their marketing photos, slogans, and even the case design. And they are already shipping months ahead of the American company. And to top it off, there's even knock-off companies warning about other knock-offs of the same product. www.amazon.com/Stainless-Keychain-Collapsible-Reusable-Beststraw/dp/B07DJ66PB1 Trump may not know the nuances of global trade and economics... but he is right about one thing... the sleeping giant is slowly taking over nearly every industry. And they did it not through innovation and hard work, or allowing their populous to be free and democratic, or having a thriving economy that was born out of the free market making the decisions. But through nefarious means, lying, stealing and cheating... all while ignoring the plight of their people and continuing to use it's populous as dutiful work slaves, building the empire of China.
Eco Mouse, that FinalStraw story is just a great example of a poorly thought-out marketing plan. I mean, did they even have a patent? Such a simple concept was doomed to get copied! Crowdfunding the project was just idiotic, they should have kept it as secretive as possible until proper manufacturing and distribution channels were established, advertising was prepared to launch and the product was ready to go to market.
I run a trade deficit with my grocery store. Every week I pay them money and instead of giving me money back they give me food. I should stop going to the grocery store, think of how much money I'd save.

I work for a manufacturing company whose primary material is metal. We have had to increase our costs due to tariffs. A vast majority of our customers are obviously not happy with the increase, so they have been buying products from a manufacturing plant in Mexico. What a brilliant idea!
I think Trump's idea was to stimulate domestic extraction and processing of metals but he forgot to subsidize local industries to put them on competitive cost level with developing countries

The body switch theory is really just a deep state sham to hide the fact that Trump killed her a while back for swatting his hand away. They then proceeded to replace her with a futuristic robot who, seeing the foolishness of the current government, will presumably in the very near future proceed to try to take over the US, then the world.
Cameron Mitchell It's because the media keeps saying that Donald Trump is a businessman. I had to remind my friend who is a business owner that Trump is a horrible business person. Let's say you build buildings and you screw over the people that frame the buildings, screw over the plumbers, screw over the electricians, how long do you think you can continue making buildings. Trump is a very good brander, but that is about it.
My Dad co ran a business through all my childhood. I remember him giving me a bit of a life lesson by telling me, the only good "deal" was one where both parties walked away happy. To Trump, his whole philosophy is winners and losers. Real high school shit.

Ugh, his "writers" are just comedians, one of his main writers came from college humor for example. It's disgusting that people take this show seriously. It's a comedy show masquerading as a knowledgeable current events program. They take a subject an average person is uneducated about and reaffirm their preconceived thoughts on the subject, instead of dedicating the countless hours it takes to completely understand a topic enough to come close enough to the truth. This piece sounds correct to you because you have no knowledge about China or trade, neither do his writers. They often take 15 second soundbites and take it out of context to create a narrative you already agree with. This show has done immense damage because it has given average people a sense of truth, when their show is merely a projection of truth based on the sheltered and uninformed perspective of people who tell jokes for a living.

Trump is (willfully) ignorant about a great many things. However, people sometimes make the mistake of assuming that everything he does is just stupidity and ignorance. It isn't. He has a plan, and it ends with him as dictator of a white supremacist America. Donald Trump has one true skill- as a con man. He's good at playing the media and the political system for personal gain. Never forget that, and never underestimate the threat he represents.
Holy crap. Was that Martin Sheen narrating Navarro's documentary??? Martin "President Bartlett, the president we all wish we had right now instead of Trump" Sheen?!
In fairness, Sheen also played a _bad_ president, "Greg Stillson", in 1983's "The Dead Zone." Stillson is a sociopath who climbs politically using blackmail and, in the main character's psychic vision of the future, is elected president and starts World War III. The main character decides to assassinate Stillson to prevent this, but Stillson grabs a baby to use as a human shield and, though he survives, is politically destroyed in the process. Actors, man.... work is work.
The biggest problem with Trump's approach to trade is that he's stuck in the zero sum game mentality. It's how he's approached his business dealings (and seemingly his whole life): every encounter, every deal has a winner and a loser. But that's not how trade is supposed to work. When you go to the store and buy something, do you always assume that either you're screwing the store over or it's screwing you over? No. As long as the sale was made in good faith and neither side pulled any dishonest shenanigans, you got something you needed/wanted and the store got some money. Everybody wins.
MrClickity in that case it doesn’t matter. China should let Trump think he won and win smaller on the side. I don’t get this argument. Trump wants more. Whether you call it zero sum or not doesn’t matter. Fold and give him concessions. What’s the problem here?
Faldegast How do you expect these US made products to be affordable, the resources would go up in price and tariffs by other countries would give American products no chance on the global market. It is basically a tax on your own people. Its Ironic how China shipping food to the US is a big problem while subsidized American farmers happily do the same to Central and South America. The US consumes more than it produces, thats why you have a trade deficit.
My point is That even though tariffs would decrease imports in the US, it would also decrease exports from the US. The tactic that the current administration is trying would only work if other countries wouldn't retaliate. Even worse is the fact that these countries will have to fight the US only in this trade war, while the US will have to fight a lot of big economical powers. Wich means they have a way better chance of finding a different market while the US would suffer the most. Also the difference in tariffs is not as big as portrayed by the Trump administration. There are numerous products where the tariffs in the US are actually higher. On average the EU's tariffs are not that far from the US, and Canada's average is lower than the US so i get see why Trump calls the EU "worse than China on trade" and why he is mentioning Canada at all. Dont get me wrong, i think China is a problem. But this is not the way to solve it.

“Fun” fact about Peter Navarro, he was my professor at UC Irvine, where he ‘teaches’ an online class based on his UA-cam series of videos that is supposed to be about economics and trade with China. I had no clue about who he was or any of his books going in, I only knew it was a course that satisfied my management minor. But instead he made us memorize the amount of Chinese aircraft carries, the amount of potential mines in the water between China and Taiwan, how China might launch missiles at the US etc. There was NOTHING about trade policies at all, and yes he made us write an essay that basically had his zero sum game in mind, and discuss how American Fortune 500 companies with setups in China would be forced to move back to the US at some point. My essay basically proved him wrong, and I got a passing grade, and no comments. We also had weekly ‘blog posts’ where we would have to write about something that related to the class, which meant a lot of people got poor marks when they cited the benefits of US-China trade. That’s mostly because a lot of the students in the class were Chinese international students who were also confused by the objective of the course, and didn’t understand how completely tone deaf he seemed to be. Anything that went against him he COMPLETELY ignored and pretended wasn’t handed in. My friend even ended up failing the course despite doing more than enough work and handing in all their work on time, purely because they criticized the contents of the course. He has tenure and emeritus status, so he’s basically impossible to get rid of, and I’m assuming he’ll come prancing back on his high horse to keep on doing his propaganda course as soon as trump is out. Hopefully he loses his status, funding, or right to teach a class, but who knows...

I can say with certainty, rewer, that I don’t hate Chinese. I am half Chinese myself, and I’m actually in Asia visiting relatives. Oh, and Australia and New Zealand? Heard of them? Yeah, more successful than Russia. China views Russia as the bumbling idiot, to distract from its own efforts.
I love the snip at the end. It says so much. I just fear too many viewers will be lost long before they reach that point and never have it explained quite so clearly. John Oliver has a way with words.
When John was talking about the BMW factory he also could have taken Mercedes' factory in Tuscaloosa. About 10 years ago the dad of my girlfriend moved there from germany to help expanding the factory because Mercedes released a lot of new cars since then. As far as i know the factory itself employs 3.000 people and another 7.000 jobs depend on the MB factory (those people work for smaller companies that produce and deliver parts). I recently talked to her dad and he said that if these taxes and tariffs keep rising the production costs will reach a too high level, so Mercedes will be forced to move their production to China. Good Job Trump.
It fucking sucks Trump's hate-boner for Merkel destroys decades of mutually beneficial trade relations between our countries. All because his German branch of the Trump organisation went under. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TD_Trump_Deutschland
So then Donald's irrational hatred for Germany and its imports is because he couldn't keep reliable business with them? That is possibly the Trumpiest explanation I could have expected.
These other countries have to realize that Trump wont be around forever. I think it would be shortsighted to move a multi-million dollar factory for a guy that is only going to have the job for another 3 years, hopefully. No other sane president is going to keep these tariffs. Even Creepy Pence wouldn't keep this insanity.
I live in Tuscaloosa!! It's so true that the Mercedes plant has done a great deal for our economy. My old high school actually has a trade program now to make it easier for kids to train and get a job there. I would hate for it to move somewhere else.
There are a couple of things in addition to Trump, which are troublesome. E.g. Germany wants to build NorthStream2, because it is of huge economical, ecological and strategic benefit. The USA tries to stop this project ever since. Nearly everybody is pissed off the by the USA torpedoing the Iran-Deal (this was not Trump alone) and the regime changes in the Middle east are not perceived well by a lot of European citizens (it led to the refugee crisis). Coming back to the Iran-Deal the if the USA continuous to succeed to enforce US-Sanction on EU-Iranian business relationships the EU may have to make sure this cannot happen again, because it's citizens may be demanding it. It is not acceptable that the US is able to enforce US-Law on EU-Companies. This is a huge long therm risk the US is taking here. The US is pissing off some very valuable allies at the moment and needs to be very carefull to not step over the point of no return. After each act of Donald Trump the transatlantic faction is pronouncing how important the USA are as allies and partners and so on ... and the pro Russia faction is rolling on the ground, laughing. The mood is swinging to looking for reliable partners. And the opinion to make the EU independent of the NATO is a lot more appealing for more people now.

I live in Alabama; yes, _that_ Alabama, I know that's not the most credible opening line to making any point. But Alabama used to be an aviation state; it made a lot of successes, and some mistakes, but the business eventually flowed elsewhere...that is, until we fought tooth-and-nail to get it back here. We finally have some steady business going with Airbus and the like, and we had to spend a premium to get them to consider us; the problem is, with the recent trade 'disputes,' there are rumors that they're considering the cost of doing business with us to be too high versus the overall benefits. Considering aviation and anything within that ballpark needs raw resources like, for example, *the ones that these tariffs are hitting as brutally as they are,* then that's not just bad for Alabama, that's bad for _any_ state where these kinds of business help the economy thrive. Alabama's finally becoming an aviation state again. We've gotten our pride back. But these short-sighted 'disputes' are gonna hurt us, and hard. Bear in mind, I live in a state where a lot of the people who may very well lose their jobs _voted for this man._ I'm sick to my stomach thinking about how they're getting fucked over like this.
EU and US economic ties are so intervened that there are endless amounts of companies affected, but never thought about Airbus and Alabama. That would be unfortunate for both Alabama and Airbus as they have been looking to extend production over there.
The one thing John Oliver did not mention is the steel coming from China and many other countries is subsidized and is being dumped on the market. Therefore the trade isn't really fair to American steel producers so the tariff is to protect them in an unfair market. I don't know why John didn't mention that, but it is relatively well reported. Also, why should I care about your made in America airplanes when you clearly don't care about American steel? You are just as bad as the people you are pointing fingers at.
This is a classic case of not paying attention in class, you should have paid more attention, this man did not ironically turn into the pussy grabber after inauguration day, a lot of people where crying foul long before he came to be as he is now and all we got was libtard thrown at us and then told to leave America.
Case in point, you can see right now for your very eyes: www.kickstarter.com/projects/908228738/finalstraw-the-worlds-first-collapsible-reusable-s
The Final Straw was a concept by this American based start-up.
And to top it off, there's even knock-off companies warning about other knock-offs of the same product. www.amazon.com/Stainless-Keychain-Collapsible-Reusable-Beststraw/dp/B07DJ66PB1
Trump may not know the nuances of global trade and economics... but he is right about one thing... the sleeping giant is slowly taking over nearly every industry. And they did it not through innovation and hard work, or allowing their populous to be free and democratic, or having a thriving economy that was born out of the free market making the decisions. But through nefarious means, lying, stealing and cheating... all while ignoring the plight of their people and continuing to use it's populous as dutiful work slaves, building the empire of China.
lol dude, you should work for John Oliver, that was perfect! Hahaha
Brilliant!
Eco Mouse, that FinalStraw story is just a great example of a poorly thought-out marketing plan. I mean, did they even have a patent? Such a simple concept was doomed to get copied! This may be one the best pieces that John and his writers have made.
agree specially the animation at the end

It is. Oh my god it is
In fairness, Sheen also played a _bad_ president, "Greg Stillson", in 1983's "The Dead Zone." Stillson is a sociopath who climbs politically using blackmail and, in the main character's psychic vision of the future, is elected president and starts World War III. The main character decides to assassinate Stillson to prevent this, but Stillson grabs a baby to use as a human shield and, though he survives, is politically destroyed in the process.
Actors, man.... work is work.
Was it Martin sheen? If so that's sad as I loved his Intro for JFK and his narration for apocalypse now.
The illusive man would never say something so stupid

How do you expect these US made products to be affordable, the resources would go up in price and tariffs by other countries would give American products no chance on the global market.

Hopefully he loses his status, funding, or right to teach a class, but who knows...
c4ss4e4d Well, you obviously missed the point of the class, that China is an authoritarian threat to the West and its liberal principles.
I'd suggest students get together to organize demonstrations and press for the firing of this utter charlatan, but I fear the rightwing cavemen would cry "SJW safe space" all day long.
c4ss4e4d, basically he’s a xenophobia who afraid of every foreigners especially china. Did he realize it was russia who manipulate usa election? Yes, china stole intellectual properties, but no where as evil as an politic manipulator.
You won’t succeed in turning this into a partisan issue. Across the political spectrum, from Schumer and Bernie to Rubio and Trump, all recognise China as the threat it is.

So many years passed by - but this is still so freaking funny 😂 "in Germany who doesn't have a BMW?"
I still think it's hilarious that he keeps bringing up the Wharton School of Finance. The only thing that is prestigious about Wharton is their MBA program, which he didn't have good enough grades to get accepted to even being an undergrad alumni. One of their retired economics professors made a big splash because he referred to Donald Trump as the dumbest student he had ever had in 30 years of teaching. This was before he ran for election.
People in business don't think Trump is impressive or even someone who's trustworthy to do a deal with. His cult-like following on the other hand...
Let's be honest, the best success Donald Trump has ever had was in a Domino's commercial.
I disagree... Home Alone New York.
Wharton is still extremely prestigious even for undergrad business degrees...
T Lee I'd say it's prestigious if you merited to be there. But, in Trump's case, one of his biographers, Gwenda Blair, wrote that he transferred in because of a favor to his brother Freddy. He only went for two years.
I was going to say Home Alone, Lost in New York. However, I was beat to it.

Not only does BMW built the X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, X5 M, and X6 M in South Carolina, but Mercedes-Benz builds several models in Tuscalosa, Alabama, and Volkswagen builds cars in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and has done since the 1970s. These are all states that support Trump, and if he in any way hurts their relationships with these automakers, then he might loose many more supports than he has. Not only does it hurt us, but it’s gonna hurt him.
Actually Almost ALL foriegn automakers have plants here to avoid tarrif issues. There's alreadyba sort of vehicle tarriff, but they call it something else.
You are assuming those US autoworkers have enough common sense to understand this basic economics lesson, and possess a 20+ minute attention span needed to grok this video.
You know, people should really learn that when they stick their junk in places it doesn't belong, bad things happen, so if you don't care for politics and do not pay attention to them, maybe don't vote because this is what happens....
Soviet who Cuts The American steel jobs are usually union positions, so that is not entirely true.
Well, I wouldn't say "getting fucked over" I would call karma. You vote for idiot, you get idiotic policies.
