Thanks for this topic. Yup, I always shied away from FM and just tweaked presets because it was over my head. I'm loving the effect that introducing small ( and extreme) amounts of inharmonic content has on the overall sounds. Really interesting and something I'm definitely going to explore. Cheers
Great video - initially gave me idea to take my electric bass track (real performance) and copy/covert that to midi - to try to create a follow FM synth version. That was cool idea BUT what that actually led too was having a clone electric bass performance track in my session - which I then EQ’d for high end and then EQ’d the original track for all low end - then blended the 2 bass tracks in mix and for the first time felt like I could control the bass tone I want! Roundabout personal discovery 🎉 thanks JB
Sounds around 6 minutes are so cool. Reminds me of a horror film. Really interesting video. Synthesis and all the knobs , buttons and options look really scary to a novice like me to be honest, but I feel like I'm getting better understanding of the mechanics of it through your videos. I think it could be interesting to automate some of the parameter changes too, probably a common enough thing to do on this type of instrument. Thanks Jono.
Hi John. Really glad the video has unlocked some useful info. The best thing about synths is that you can just dabble. Push one slider or turn one rotary at a time and keep playing notes to hear how the tone and character change. If you like it, do more - if you don’t, back it down! FM is a lesser spotted synthesis type these days but it can do some wonderful and unpredictable things.
Just adding to the final touches part: if you use the Latch tool on the channel strip, you can record all of the changes that you’re making and create movement within the song! This can take a loop into a full song with very little work
Thank you for this great video that gives a nice idea of FM synthesis. I never underrated FM synthesis, 'cause I owned a DX7. What's the reason that there are no good FM E.piano's in Logic's library ? Has the Synth not enough Operators like the 6 Operators from the DX7 ?
Wonderful! The DX7 was and is an absolute beauty. Yes, Retro Synth brings the 'flavour' of a number of different classic synths and their assorted approaches to synthesis to life under one roof. It's not quite a Moog or a DX7 or a PPG Wave but it's a few steps in each of their assorted directions, without providing the full richness sonic possibilities of the originals. It's still a great and versatile instrument, though.
You're welcome - I'm glad it was useful. I'm not sure the melody has a name! I was just improvising. I hope it'll be easy enough to follow if you want to watch the notes I play.
Hi Jono. Do you do requests? The loop brace in Logic (is that what you call the orange loop bar at the top?) drives me mad. I'm always losing t because it's turned off and hidden at bar 2,500 or whatever! I'm sure there must be ways of summoning it, but my Google search has drawn a blank. I think I can help! Best way to get it where you want it is to click on a region (around which you want to create a cycle/loop) and use the key command: Command+U. That will set the Cycle range around a region where you need it. Select multiple regions to create a longer loop. The other way is to simply drag in the Ruler area at the top of the Main Page. This is split in half with an upper and lower section. Click and drag from left to right in the upper half, across the area where you want to Cycle and you’ll create a new orange bar to indicate the loop length. Let me know if either work. I’ll certainly add this to the list for the forthcoming UA-cam Shorts series!
