After Which Failed Pregnancy Should I Have Been Imprisoned? Rep. Lucy McBath on Reproductive Rights

  • During a meeting of the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, Democratic Congressmember Lucy McBath of Georgia shared her personal story about accessing reproductive care after experiencing a stillbirth. In doing so, she pointed out how anti-abortion politicians and legislators fail to see the medical necessity of abortion in instances such as hers. “We can be the nation that rolls back the clock, that rolls back the rights of women, and that strips them of their very liberty. Or we can be the nation of choice - the nation where every woman can make her own choice,” says McBath.

      What do you expect from a government that's leaning more and more towards authoritarian theocracy? Women have to justify their existence. People of colour have to justify their existence. Basic human rights are being overturned. And the only ones surprised by any of this are Americans.

      As someone who has had more than one miscarriage I really felt for her. To have to carry a child that is already dead is heartbreaking. But what a woman to bring up her difficulties in public in this way and to so powerfully state that under new laws after roe she could have been imprisoned. These men don't get it do they! It is possible for ANY woman to have a miscarriage, or more than one miscarriage, myself included. It is possible for Any woman to have an ectopic pregnancy that could end her life without the correct treatment.Treatment that many of these new state rules plan to outlaw. It is also possible, that ANY woman however careful can find that her child has died before birth. The means to deal with all of these could be illegal even if prescribed by medical professionals under these proposed laws. What a wonderful speaker she is. She had me both angry and in tears. We need more women who can talk fervently about this. But too many women suffer the agony of losing a child already, and far too many hear their men say "just get over it" or "you can always have another one." It's totally heartbreaking and this law would ultimately make more women loose their lives because doctors will be afraid to treat them. 😭🤬

    In a society that too often see women only in terms of sex and motherhood, women who lose children are only rarely given the emotional, medical, and social support they need and deserve. The crime to me is our treatment of vulnerable pregnant women.

      When I lost my 2nd pregnancy, I was terrified and absolutely beside myself when I discovered blood while out shopping with my husband. I was desperate for anything to stop the inevitable, begging my midwife for hope. It still chills me to this day how casually they treated it. That it wasn’t a big deal and to call if I developed any signs of infection. I’m losing my baby, but there was no comfort, no counseling, and no one to turn to.
      I also had absolutely no clue how common miscarriage is and that my silent experience was shared by so many woman around me. I found out after that my own mother had a miscarriage and gone through the same grief and guilt! But it’s taboo to discuss. “It is what it is”.
      I understand miscarriages are usually for natural reasons, but that doesn’t lessen the profound grief and guilt women experience as a result. That there’s little thought given to the mental health impact is so cruel, and makes me feel like we’re regarded as little more than incubators 😞
      I still think about our little bean, and how excited we were to welcome them. I cry a little every time I have to write 3 pregnancies, 2 to term on every damned medical history form. I agree there is no excuse for such blatant dismissal of mothers in our country. It’s inhumane, and it is absolutely criminal for politicians (who don’t even understand a women’s reproductive system!) to practice medicine without a license and take our right to choice away.

      A pre viable fetus is basically a parasite on the mother . This causes physical issues and can cause harm . Forcing women who do not want to go through with an unwanted pregnancy is abusing that woman. The Right by banning abortions and criminalizing miscarriages is also abusing women as 1 women have no control over that 2 retaining a dead fetus or having an ectopic pregnancy can cause death of the woman.

      Conservatives believe women should be housewives. Restricting our ability to choose when, how and if we become mothers is just one more way to try to force women into motherhood, or punish them for being sexually active outside of marriage. Conservatives see getting pregnant and having children as the natural outcome of women having sex, and do not like women being able to avoid "god's will" for them to have children. It's a punishment, for those who are not married. It's a reward for those who are. That's why so many of them are also against birth control. Although they will often avoid flat out saying they don't want birth control to be legal (as this would be deeply unpopular even among many Republican voters) they will do whatever they can to make it harder to access, including calling some forms of common birth control (like the pill and IUDs) to be "abortion". We can absolutely expect that if Roe V Wade falls we will see sweeping, swift legislation to classify many forms of birth control as "abortions" and make them illegal. We can also expect to see greater restrictions on access to any legal methods of contraception including reduced access to condoms. They will want to make it illegal to give them out to teenagers, or find ways to restrict where and to whom they can be sold. We may even see some states require that only women with medical reasons can use birth control, or only married women, only women x age or older, or only with consent from their husbands (under the guise of "men's rights" to choose if they want to have children). It's never really been about "state's rights" or "saving babies" it's always been about enforcing their theology onto everyone.

      Actually, the repeal of the Roe v Wade decision is what would grant THE PEOPLE the ability to vote on this issue, in a state by state basis. Whether intentionally or* not, you're actually making the argument the right wing of the supreme court is expressing. The decision in Roe v Wade is basically that the "unenumerated right" to privacy for woman supersedes the privileges of the states and the people to "excessive(ly)" restrict abortion access, which is generally considered prior to 20 weeks of a pregnancy. In my opinion, arguing that you should be able to vote on this issue is like arguing that I should have the right to vote on whether or not you have the right to life and liberty. I don't believe I should have that privilege, nor do I believe a woman's (or any person's) right to bodily autonomy should be restricted by any level of government.

Even Ruth Bader Ginsburg said so. Why was it bad law? Because it stripped the individual states of their ability to pass their own abortion laws and federalized abortion forcing SCOTUS to essentially legislate from the bench. You see, they're the judicial branch. Not the legislative branch, so they really shouldn't be legislating from the bench, or from anywhere else. The D&C is removing the dead body from her womb so that it will not decompose in her and kill her. I'm sorry you had such a completely and dangerously ignorant priest. I'm glad you didn't take his advice, but in no way did the doctor doing the D&C commit an abortion. Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy, not the actual removal of the fetus from the womb. We are fortunate to now have two very smart democrat black women competing for the best word salad recipe. Kamala Harris, a straight black woman, mixed together this delicious word salad: “We will work together, and will continue to work together, to address these issues, to tackle these challenges, and to work together as we continue to work, operating from the new norms, rules, and agreements, that we will convene to work together...We will work on this together." On another occassion our extinguished vice president served this salad: "For Jamaica, one of the issues that has been presented as an issue that is economic in the way its impact has been the pandemic...we will assist Jamaica in Covid recovery by assisting in terms of the recovery efforts in Jamaica that have been essential."
      Competing with Kamala Harris is Karine Jean-Pierre, a black lesbian woman, who served this salad when asked how raising corporate income taxes reduces inflation: “Well, you know, we have talked about…we have talked about this this past year about making sure that the wealthiest among us are paying their fair share,” she continued. “And that is important to do. This is something that the president has worked on everyday when talking about inflation or lowering costs. And so it’s very important that, you know, as we’re seeing costs rise, as we’re talking about how to, you know, build an America that’s safe, that’s equal for everyone and doesn’t leave anyone behind. That is an important part of that as well.” This is her second attempt after having the simple question asked agsain: “So, look, I think we encourage those who have done very well, right? People who are concerned about climate change should support fairer tax codes. That doesn’t change. It doesn’t charge manufacturers, workers, cops, builders a higher percentage of their earnings that the most fortunate people in our nation and not let that stand in the way of reducing energy costs and fighting this existential problem, if you think about that as an example. It is important to protect basic collective bargaining rights. That’s also important. But look, it is, you know, by not without having a fair tax code, which is what I’m talking about, then like manufacturing workers, cops. You know, it’s not fair for them to have to pay higher taxes than the folks that who are who are who are not paying taxes at all.”

His exact words to me, after a full exam, was I needed to "terminate or die" but I wasn't far enough along, I lived with excruciating pain for weeks until I was able to end the pregnancy. Because of the Hyde Amendment, my insurance could NOT cover an abortion so I had to pay for it out of pocket. I was traumatized by the entire experience and actually blocked all of it out of my mind, from the weeks leading up to the appointment, during the procedure, and immediately after in fact I don't even remember the WHEN I had it. I live with that to this day almost 30 years later especially since I've never been able to have children due to a back injury and several low back surgeries. The only thing I do remember about the procedure was I asked the doctor (or could have been a nurse) why I began having stomach cramps so early and he said it was due to my Rh and the fathers Rh being incompatible. I also had knowledge that my paternal grandmother died just have delivery of my father and his twin, but I had no idea why.

      This was only in 2012. A perfectly healthy mom was having serious complications- basically a miscarriage in progress at 17 weeks. An extremely faint heartbeat was still detectable and therefore a medical abortion wasn't allowed, even though she and husband begged the doctors. The baby could not possibly have lived. Doctors waited 3 days, she became septic, and died... a totally preventable death. Because of outrage over this, legalized limited abortions won the popular vote around 2018. However it's still difficult to get abortions there because of few providers.

    She makes such a powerful statement for healthcare. As well, there is no woman’s story that highlights the difference between early pregnancy loss, still birth, and then the death of your child. When men say that a 6 week abortion is ‘killing your child’, they should think to ask this of her. I’ve had six pregnancies, and four of them ended in spontaneous abortion. They were early, all before 11 weeks. Women are designed to be able to handle this psychologically. It’s devastating, and so guilt inducing, but if someone had asked me if I ‘killed my child’ can only serve to make it worse. I didn’t lose children, I lost the hope of a child. If losing an early pregnancy was as hard as a still birth, or as hard as giving a child away, or loosing a grown child, women would collectively lose their minds. That’s why women talk about pregnancy loss as very different from stillbirth. There’s real physiological and psychological change around 12 weeks, when the bundle of cells becomes ‘something’ and another around 23/24 weeks, when that little ‘thing’ becomes ‘somebody’. These dates aren’t arbitrary, and I think many men have NO idea that there’s a reason why we talk about the first and second and third trimesters. And why countries around the world who have laws around abortion, and medical guidelines use the same timeframes. Men who don’t ‘get’ this seem to think that giving a child away at birth is the same as if you gave away an embryo, or worse still, that voluntary abortion is the same as infanticide.

    • @petersdotter1
      @petersdotter1 2 роки тому

      I so wish those who hold power over pregnancy would pay attention to a modicum of science! One such politician from Oklahoma yesterday, said that an embryo is a "human being" with rights like any other human being. "No!" I screamed at the screen. "That is not a human being. It's a cluster of cells implanted in one of the organs of a host." If the host dies, so does it. If you don't approve of abortion, don't have one. But, don't send women back into the unsafe regions of back alleys!

If you want to control women, then you do as little sex ed as possible, and ban abortion and birth control. You’ll have lots of young, dependent women having babies. Educated empowered women have fewer babies, and are less dependent on the fathers of those babies.

      Karen, I agree with everything you say. For many people who are against a woman's right to decide, the reason they give would give you the impression that they think women will go and have abortions left and right carelessly and freely. As if women would organize abortion parties and toast to each other. What woman in her right mind would want to be lying in that position on a cold table with suction? I personally don't think I could have an abortion but I am glad that in my young womanhood, I had the choice.

    • @hardiemartellgarnett2911
      @hardiemartellgarnett2911 2 роки тому

      One thing few people talk about is the fact that many times it is the man in the relationship who urges a woman to get an abortion. Years ago I re-met the cousin of a cousin of mine and I remember him from when we would play when I would visit my cousin. He confided in me that he had a lot of guilt that is haunting him. He was very, very handsome. He had women throwing themselves at him all his life. Some of these women would get pregnant because he did not feel he should have to wear a condom. He would encourage these women to get an abortion or he would threaten to break up with them. These women would get abortions and he would break up with them anyway. A couple women had their babies regardless of what he said so he did have 2 children. But most of the women stupidly did what he asked in an effort to hold on to him. So as he got into his 40s and beyond he had guilt. So it makes me wonder just how many abortions are done at the urging of men but they like Hester Prynn's lover, the lazy pastor lingered in the shadows while the woman and child take the brunt of scorn and abuse? How many abortions are really at the urging of men?

    • @YouKnowMeDuh

      @@hardiemartellgarnett2911 Not only that, but the fact that repeat abortions do have a negative effects on the body. Having abortions "left and right" is neither rational nor desirable, despite those who may claim in the heat of an argument that they will have as many abortions as they want.
      In general, to skew abortion as something that is purely by choice is the most insane thing ever. I can't say I've ever known of any woman who just casually has an abortion with the same nonchalance and they would go grocery shopping, y'know? And it's not even an issue of just slutty women having abortions, as Ms. McBath makes absolutely clear as a married woman. It affects all women regardless of background and social standing.
      The way states are moving to virtually ban abortion is just one of many dark paths this nation is heading down... It shouldn't take women dying or even suffering just to make some bells go off in people's heads as to why abortion is an essential service. And yet, women will suffer, as well as children, and those who are in power will be hard put to turn their heads from their lavish lifestyles for a moment and deign to empathize with the plight of people who mean nothing to them.
