Hasselblad wideangle 28mm f4 - 4/28p - first impressions, any size compromise?

  • Hasselblad recently released a new wideangle lens, a 28mm with an aperture of f4, named XCD 4/28p.
    It is a very interesting lens as it is very compact, actually the smallest so far in the XCD lens line-up, and also the lightest. Furthermore, like the other recent lenses from Hasselblad it has a leaf shutter that allows down to 1/4000 second shutter time. That means you can use flash at full power down to 1/4000.
    But does the small size come at a cost? Is it sharp, does it vignette, is there chromatic aberration? I'll look into this in a later more in depth review, but this video gives you my first impressions of this lens.

    I could not stop myself and bought this lens today. It will arrive tomorrow and look forward using it. I have the 45p lens wich u like very much but i wanted someting close to a 24 mm in fullframe equivalence. I like dynamic shots with someting in the foreground and stil having space around it and this lens can focus really close.
    Thanks for your review! I like that you bring your opinion very neutral and not overly enthusiastic like some others that always are positive about everything. But just realistic and critical.

      @@key2adventure just received it and put it on the X2D. The focusing is definitely much faster and more accurate than with the 45P and the 80 mm f1.9... And a bit lighter. But we will know soon enough how it performs in the field.

    This is a very attractive lens in terms of size und price. Thanks for the video. Maybay you can talk about vignietting and how the lens works with a speedlite and a strobe in the later review.

    I have the 28P after having owned the 30mm. I am still trying to figure out the best apertures for sharpness across the frame - it doesn't seem as consistently sharp as the 30mm, and interestingly may perform better wide open or close to wide open (I am used to stopping down to around f/8-f/11 for corner to corner sharpness). There may be some field curvature too. Still love it for its compactness and silent operation - great for shooting in urban environments. But for landscape shooting I think I would prefer the 30mm.

      Thanks for sharing your experience. Time will tell if I come to a similar conclusion, though I don't have the 30mm to compare with. But I'll sure like the size of it when I go climbing in the Himalayas in october 🙂

    Thank you for this review and I am now looking at getting this lens for the X2D camera. These lenses seem to be difficult to acquire in UK but not in Scandinavia/Denmark. Goodness knows when the 90mm will become available. Interesting review - thanks again

    Love your reviews. Always wondered how hasselblad manages to make wide angle lenses with such small elements “glass” do you have an answer to that mystery 😅

    • @key2adventure
      @key2adventure  9 місяців тому

      Not really, but remember that the aperture value is a fraktion, therefore the lens elements only need to be very small for an aperture of f4

    How do you display the focus distance?

    • @key2adventure
      @key2adventure  5 місяців тому

      You don't. Unlike the three 38, 55, and 90mm 2.5 lenses, there is no focus scale, just like on the older Hasselblad XCD lenses.

    I'm curious how does this compare with the 45P on the X1DII? Would it be worth changing?

    • @key2adventure
      @key2adventure  10 місяців тому

      No on the contrary, together they complete each other. I see it this way, the 28mm corresponds to around 22mm of Full Frame, the 45mm corresponds to a 35mm, and thus applies to very different tasks. I will keep them both and still wait for my 90mm f2.5 for a rather complete set of lenses.

    Hello Dear, I have heard of an issue the combo X1D2 + 28P. Have you notice a magenta color aberration on any of your photos ? Thank you for your response. I would like to invest in 28P, but that issu makes me hesitate.

    I have the 45/P (and can still return within a few days), will be getting the 28/P for travel & street and good price. I am thinking of switching the 45/P for the XCD 38mm2.5, should I? The AF speed of the 38mm is only marginally faster than the 45P, I find.
    Since I now have the TechArt (it worked with the EF 100-400! Thank you!), I could, of course, just get a EF 40mm f2.8 like you. Is the EF 40mm why you did not seem to have the XCD 38mm?
    I am willing to have 1 good XCD lens in my bag, just not sure which one: XCD 25, 38, 55. (For tele, I am looking at one of the EF 85mm, and I already have the 100-400mm). For travel/street/food/close-up, I am thinking of either the 28mm (no stock), or 38mm (in hand). 45P (in hand) but much louder and slower than the 38mm.

    • @key2adventure
      @key2adventure  2 місяці тому

      I really don't know what you should do, as it depends on for what purpose and how regularly you need a specific focal length. I am somewhat satisfied with the XCD 28mm, the 45p, and the 90V. I would like a longer focal length, but probably wouldn't spend the money on it, as I wont be using it so much. Regarding the 38mm, I just think it's to close to my 45p, that I like a lot, and as you say, I also got the EF 40mm 2.8 if I want something a little wider and with a more open aperture. I did reviews of both the 85mm f1.2 and the f1.8 some time ago, you could watch them if you would like to know what I think of those lenses on the Hasselblad.

      @@key2adventure I did watch every video (on the 85mm) as they are so informative!! I will sit on this and ponder for a few more days. Let's see if something else comes up (like a used lens). The 28/45/(85, or 90) are ideal distances apart, like you said. 🙂

    When you write "That means you can use flash at full power down to 1/4000" I have to wake you up from your dream. The 1/4000 will simply cut most of the flash power off in time when you shoot at 100%.
    If we, for ease, ignore the t-something spec of flash duration then the question stands, what speedlight or strobe has a flash duration at full power of 1/4000 sec? Almost all of its history Profoto was at 1/200 at full power and that's 20 times as long.
    In short, yes you can, but for your camera and studio pack strobe or speedlight, test it. You'll see that at some point the camera cuts the flash off.
    Is that a problem? Well it increases recycle time and a battery-fed system has less flashes at full power than at a reduced setting.
    Just make sure you have a strobe or speedlight that maintains consistency in flash power and colour temperature when you reduce flash power. Older Profoto and cheaper ones from the past are notoriously bad. AFAIK the first to have complete reliable control over this aspect was broncolor, but my Nikon speedlight has it too, and today's cheap Chinese speedlights from the Holy Cow [1] brand may have it too.

    Only watching this video because I love 28mm lenses and wow so expensive for a 28mm f4. Cool lens but seems rather slow for a 28mm.

    • @key2adventure
      @key2adventure  10 місяців тому +1

      Yes that is true, Hasselblad is not known for low prices, but their optical quality nearly always are in the top. I expect this lens to be that way. Remember you can't compare with a full frame lens, as this lens has to have superb quality on a larger image circle to support the larger sensor. Anyway, it's still expensive.
