  • I took out my kayak and was surprised to find the water had become too dirty where I planned to fish. After making an adjustment, I began to cast around my micro drop shot presentation in a new area. It didn't take long before I was surprised to catch a few big fish on this ultralight rig.
    The micro drop shot rig is one of my favorite presentations for ultralight fishing when I want to keep my bait near the bottom. A nice slow drag along the bottom can entice bites from a variety of species. Today, it happened to be some big northern pike :)

    After you posted this video I decided to give this a shot. This is now one of my top confidence setups. My daughters and I have been having really good luck with this setup. Two separate times people have packed up and left because my daughter was out fishing them. Not gonna lie it was a very proud dad moment to have my 9 year old daughter make grown men get jealous of her fishing skills and pack up and leave. Thanks for all of the tips and advice. It has landed me more fish than I can count at this point.

    It is crazy how many certain bass fishing technique's can be down sized to target the panfish species. I just recently got my first kayak and taking it out to a local lake for the first time. I also like to ultra-light drop-shot fish, but I use the VMC Spin Shot hooks. They have built in tiny swivels top and bottom to prevent or greatly reduce line twist. I tie the terminal end of the line (usually 2 or 4-lb.) to the top swivel, then I pack a fly fishing leader wheel with me and use 12-lb, about 18 inches or so. The reason I use the heavier line is that in cinches up snugly in the drop-shot weight and you don't have to tie a knot. That way if you want to adjust the depth of your weight or change the weight, you don't have to fuss with tying knots every time. I also prefer the round drop-shot weights. They seem to bounce along the bottom better - balls bounce, right?

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  Рік тому +1

      Awesome points John! I actually prefer the long skinny weights because I fish a lot of grass and they seem to come through better. The ball seems to work better on harder bottoms like rock and pea gravel. I love the idea of those swivel hooks and higher lb test line on the bottom. Thank you!

      @@FishAnything I'd expect nothing less! You did an awesome job on the design of the plastics! ... Having said that, I'd also love to see you do a side by side review of their line vs j-braid. I began using the J-Braid line because of one of your videos. I was nervous about using braid on the Dobyns ultra lite, but your take on J-Braid convinced me to give it a try. I'm now using it in two sizes and plan on replacing all of my other braid with J-Braid when the time comes. My biggest problem (with all line, really, but especially the really light stuff) is the wind! 1/64 oz jigs on 6 lb braid with 2 - 6 lb / 6-24 inch leaders. I've had a cast go 20 ft sideways into trees and bushes. Lost many a lure in the wind! 😟

    Do you think the extra sensitivity from using a tungsten dropshot weight is worth the cost? I have some tungsten ds weights but primarily use lead. I get the lead weights cheap and 1/8 isn’t that big so don’t worry about tungsten that much.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  Рік тому

      Micah, it is definitely a fair point. I don't think the added sensitivity is super beneficial honestly. Can't hurt, but I doubt you are going to catch a ton more fish because of it. I personally get the tungsten to reduce the weight size and avoid putting lead weights in the water. As many weights as I used to lose, I find that I am starting to reduce that by physically tying the weight to my line as opposed to pinching it.

      For ultralight, I prefer a co polymer or mono leader. Fluoro is just too brittle in

    I love fishing for pike... when I want to fish for pike lol. Dang toothy critters like to steal my baits. When they steal a worm I'm bummed, when they steal a Jackhammer I'm a little more upset. I lost a Megabass Jerkbait to one last year, but that was my fault. I got impatient with trying to land him and his teeth caught my line.

      Yeah I love pike when they cooperate but they sure can be annoying at times haha

    I would fish the drop shot more often, but I fish so many rocky areas I end up re tying weights as much as I fish.

      I use split shot .cheaper and if it does hang up just give it a steady pull and all you will lose is the weight

      Growing up in Kansas, I can relate. Lots of rock and limestone there. I will say, the round ball drop shot weights come over rock much better than the skinny ones. I use these primarily because we have a ton of grass and they come through better.

    Wouldn’t a double jig setup be just like a drop shot with double the chance of catching a fish

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah it definitely could be fished that way

    I staring drop shotting a drowned ant fly and have been tearing them up. When the water gets cold (no ice here) I am drop shotting a 1 inch green gulp minnow. It should imitate the tiny green worms that the fish eat in winter

      That is awesome! Micro drop shots are a great way to catch fish of all types.

    If you can expect pike on this water you really shouldn't fish with such light line because offcourse pike is gonna get a a micro lure! I fish on a big lake with a lot of pike and if you go fish ultra light it will always happen! Always a pike is gonna take it! Ot is no option to go dropshot on my lake and inresponsible for the pikes! I use a 70mm fluorocarbon leader on a ultra light setup for 5cm swimbait with small jighead. Then i know i am safe and i can at least catch multiple species! Like walleye/Zander and big 50+cm perch as big as very big smallmouth in america. But dropshoting is no option over here. I feel so bad when i let a pike swim away with a hook in his mouth knowing it was my fault!
