It has to be noted that alot of Macau's success can be linked to money laundering. Wealthy Chinese citizens are limited in the ammount of money they can send overseas, this means that anybody looking to move out of China will have issues bringing their wealth with them. A solution is to buy a $10,000,000 holiday package at one of these Macau casino's that includes a fancy room, flights, meals and ohhh lets say 10 million dollars worth of casino chips. Gamble thorugh all of that and you are likely to loose a bit to the house advantage but you will probably still walk away with 90% given average luck. Suddenly you have just generated an income of 9 million dollars in macua which is specifically not mainland china and you are free to have these winnings sent anywhere in the world without the CCP being able to stop you.

@@DerFilc Er, mate... If anything it's a shorter way of being wrong. Brazilian Portuguese was never spoken in Macau.
Actually, China didn't force Portugal to return Macau. In the 1970s, there was a regime change in Portugal and the Portuguese Colonial War ends. The new Portugal govt intended to return Macau to China, whereas China was during the cultural revolution and had no mood to regain control of Macau.
because the portuguese didn't want macao anymore, and basically didn't give a single damn about them, it was only after the handover was when Macao really started booming
@@yukshunlong9456 Portugal at that moment : 🙂😐
@@yukshunlong9456 I wouldn't put it like that, but more as 1.Portugal could barely handle the state of their mainland country, 2. as part of the "decolonizing" process, which became part of the constitution, Portugal had to handover, or grant independence, to all territories that were not the Portuguese mainland and the archipelagos of Madeira and Azores (since they we actually discovered by the Portuguese). The fact that China refused to regain control of Macau in the 70s actually forced Portugal to create a specific legislation for Macau until China was ready. Although I understand why you would feel like that.
Portuguese have benefits in macau. China agreed to accept partial dual citizenship in macau with portugal. A child born in macau to a portuguese legal resident is automatically a permanent resident as well as the child of a chinese but not any other nationality unless the parents possess right of abode themselves. Macau stil has portuguese as one of official languages its cantonese and portuguese.
@@yukshunlong9456 oh portuguese did give a damm about macau. Macaese people born during portuguese rule keep both chinese and portuguese passports valid portugal made sure in negotions they could keep their european union portuguese passports valid. No one else in china can have dual citizenship. United kingdom did not issue uk passports to hong kongers but portugal granted them full eu citizenhip and those passports remain valid to day because portugal negociated with china to partially allow dual citizenship.

Portugal did propose that the handover happen in the 450th anniversary of their lease of Macau, somewhere between 2003 and 2004. This plan happened after China did reject their handover plan in the 1970s shortly after the Carnation Revolution.

You neglected to mention that the reason Macau has such high revenue is because it is one of the only "legal" ways to convert RMB into other currencies. China imposes limits on how much money you can convert into a different currency as to not devalue their own currency too much. So there are a lot of millionaires in China and they want to change it into a more reliable currency they go to macau, gamble, and turn their chips into HKD then turn the HKD into USD or EURO or YEN. The majority of large gamblers from mainland to Macau are using this loophole and see the "loss" at the tables as a fee to do business. This is the reason the most popular game is Baccarat because of the high win to loss ratio.
China is getting more and more upset with this because they see millionaires do this run in Macau and then while they are in Hong Kong they apply for citizenship there or in another country. They end up taking their money out of China and bring it somewhere else. China has been figuring out how to crack down on that and they are looking towards Hong Kong to try and stop the expatriation of funds. China has been cracking down on the amount of visas they give out to go to macau and in general casinos have seen a revenue crash of about 25% in the last 4 years. That is one of the reasons for Hong Kong becoming more mainland "friendly".

Just a correction: after the Carnation Revolution in Portugal, the Portuguese government were actually begging to PR China that the handover happen sooner, but China was postponing it later since they do not want to spoil the Hong Kong handover, which was more geopolitcally important for them. Also Portugal wanted it to happen in 2003/2004, on the 450th anniversary of the lease of Macau, but China was not patient enough to wait for that long anymore. Hence the Macau handover happened on 1999.

Macau started being transferred to the Chinese after the 1966 riots, after which Portugal renounced the perpetual lease, then in 1987 the portuguese and Chinese agreed on the conditions of the hand-over and the date (1999).
In the video it kinda seems like it was a half assed agreement in the 90's, after the hand-over of Hong Kong.
Didn't the renunciation of the perpetual lease happen only after the Carnation Revolution? Weirldy though the later Portuguese government wanted the turnover to happen in 2003 or 2004, to commemorate the 450th anniversary of the lease of Macau. Naturally the CCP was impatient for that, so 1999 it was.

Nope, you completely missed why gambling is so big in Macau. You can only get $10,000 USD out of RMB per year legally. Millionaires that want to leave China have to launder their money, they use Macau casinos for that.
"Portugal wanted to keep Macau forever" bro that's not true. After overthrowing the dictatorship in 1974, the new revolutionary government wanted to return Macau right away but China's government decided against it, because at the time the British didn't want to give Hong Kong back yet, so if Portugal returned Macau it would mean the UK would also have to give it back, and since they didn't want it it could potentially mean war.
the music in this vid is truly the best out of all of rll's vids
Whenever I hear Macau, I think of Macuco, a very good dairy company in Brasil that make beautiful butter and milk that doesn’t taste or smell like it’s gone rotten only after four days of purchase.
It is highly unlikely China is going to give up this massive revenue stream, even if they fully re-annex Macau. But who knows what will happen between now and 40 years.
In 2018 Macao got revenues value of $33 billion, while Las Vegas in 2019 got $25.4 billion. On the other hand using purchasing power of yuan in China to that of dollar in U.S those revenues of Macao were likely 4 times bigger of Las Vegas. So i would estimate Macao having about 4 times bigger gambling business than Las Vegas.
First "dashlane", "dashlane", "dashlane", now it's fricking BRILLIANT!!!
One country two systems works fine in Macau, but not in Hong Kong, I wonder why?🤔
Because the Portuguese are more reliable than the Anglo-Saxons, they have not used Macau to threaten China like Hong Kong.
