    In this Our Changing Climate environmental video essay, I look at why Allbirds has become so popular. Specifically, I look at how Allbirds have used sustainably sourced materials like wool and eucalyptus tree fiber to create their wool runner shoes that are both environmentally conscious and comfortable. Allbirds’s wool runners and tree toppers show that innovation and creativity in a stagnant market can lead to highly popular and sustainable solutions. Ultimately, Allbirds shows that in order to create popular products that are sustainable and innovative, you need to be creative and work against the status quo.

    I recently bought some limited edition Tree Runners from AllBirds, and not only are they made from sustainable Tencel and recycled plastic but the profits also went to protecting endangered birds! They are insanely comfortable and breezy and are now the only shoes I take with me whilst travelling. This video points out exactly why I love the company and product so much though - the combination of that simplicity, comfort and sustainability. Another fantastic video!

      @@tehguitarque The Tree Runners are designed for hot weather and are mesh-like to allow air flow so your feet will get wet if it's raining a lot. However they can be put in the washing machine so easy to clean and dry quickly. Basically they're a summer shoe, that you don't mind wearing for summer showers/tropical rain when it dries quickly but wouldn't wear during winter in the UK 😂 I think the Wool Runners are water resistant and designed for colder weather but I don't own any so can't say from experience!

    Wool is grown in NZ, spun in Europe, processed in Korea, assembled in China, sold in the USA. Sustainable is a marketing strategy, we learn about it in business school. If they really wanted to be sustainable everything would be made in NZ. (The only place that type of wool comes from)

      Everything would be made to order by your local cobbler. 1 pair of shoes/boots that fit you good and is repairable and resoleable is a dream as long as it doesn't cost a payment on the mortgage.

    • @TheRabbitHasLanded
      @TheRabbitHasLanded 4 роки тому +2

      Everything is a marketing strategy at this point, every detail, every word, every action has a purpose to draw in the consumer. There are obviously more comfortable shoes out there, and me purchasing one shoe isn’t gonn save the world but it’s up to the All birds marketing team to convince me that I am. If I really wanted to help I would keep wearing my old shoes, until they couldn’t be worn anymore, or even resole them.

    • @foginxtor1378
      @foginxtor1378 5 років тому +79

      This kinda defeats the point though. The sheep are already there as the farmers are farming the sheep and selling the wool along side selling the sheep products. Also, you need to be less sustainable to get somewhere pretty much. Being slightly less sustainable in the name of more comfort is good overall because it makes the brand more successful, increasing the market share in the shoe market of environmentally friendly shoes, and it increases public awareness of how much fashion impacts on shoes. A brand can't really get that much better without getting worse.

    What one also has to look at, is not only the impact of any one shoe but also the length of the lifecycle. I feel like the biggest problem with any fabric-based shoe (maybe with the exception of high tech synthetic fibers) is the rate at which you need to replace them. I want to move away from leather-based shoes, but my gold standard is still a pair of leather hiking shoes which lasted me for 10 years. And I didn't just do grueling hikes with them in different conditions a couple times a year, I did all daily walking with them for about two-thirds of any year I had them. And by that point, I bet they beat any fabric shoe that most people replace after one season, or at the most a year or two, on sustainability.

    I definitely have a look on sustainability when buying shoes or other stuff, but style & usablity (comfort, waterproof etc) is just as important. Also, durability. Had some organic & fairtrade certified shoes once but they fell apart after like half a year... Got a different brand now, also fairtrade & eco friendly, these are much better :)
    If sustainable shoes should become mainstream they'll have to be stylish & comfortable, because that's the focus for most people.

      Quentin T Wild sheep would be different from the domestic ones we have today and would not need their wool sheared. It’s like with wolves and dogs, wolves don’t need to be brushed or groomed, but it’s necessary for dogs so that they can be in good health. I do believe ethical sheep shearing is possible, if you can remove a layer of wool without damaging the skin, it will regrow quickly and be quite beneficial for the health of the sheep. I don’t want to start an argument, I just want to make a point that farms can exist and be good for animals at the same time

      as devil's advocate, i suppose one line of thinking is that it doesn't matter how well the sheep are treated bc the issue would be that they are being used at all. like, even if we had invented an entirely pain-free method of shearing which doesn't make them nervous or anything, we'd still be robbing them of their time and agency to just walk around being sheep and shit. im okay with such a scenario. im okay with valuing humans over animals.

    One suggestion for future video creation is to slightly increase the speed of the video overall. For me, the video feels a bit too slow and drawn out; I believe the cause of that is how slow the transitions are and how slowly you narrate.
    Other than that the concept and the content of the video is great!

If suppliers were farmers from Europe it would be absolutely eko friendly European ground unlike Australian and New Zeland is not prone to erosion that results in desrtification. Sheep is native species there. It is generally beneficial to meadow and montainous ecosystems. But some are turning rainforest into pastures which results in desrtification. Alright ... I've been thinking about this for quite a while and I'd like your point of view on this :
    While some people are going vegan to save the animal from cruelty and/or planet, the vegan way of thiking wants you in the long term to not use any animal based product of cruelty-free products often leading vegans to buy sythetic fabric. They are, inedeed, cruelty free but not eco-friently (execpt second hand clothes).
    Does the vegan way of living is compatible with a concern for climate change?

    • @sleepycatgamer
      @sleepycatgamer 5 років тому +1

      Yes true vegans care about animals, the planet, and their health.
      Greta thunberg being vegan but also the most important climate activist today shows that you can't really be an environmentalist while participating in the animal production industry, which is more destructive to the environment than all the transportation industry combined.

    • @jess01510
      @jess01510 5 років тому +1

      @@sleepycatgamer Yes, I do agree with that ... I just find myself having and hard time finding a middle ground between thow two believes.
      That the question is : how about the textile industry that is polluting third-part of the world contries such as bengladesh, china and more. The production of sythetic textile is make the air unbreathable, especially in china and the human condition is often poor.
      I don't know, I feel like those two questions seems contradictory to me but that may be because I don't know enought about veganism ... (?)
      Then does the solution would be to only buy second hand and boyicott the industy of both clothing AND animal production ?

    • @sleepycatgamer
      @sleepycatgamer 5 років тому +2

      @@jess01510 I understand your conflict, but you arrived at the solution at the end, yes you can be both, like many environmentalists are, and I think that once you know more about veganism you will come to the same conclusion. Please watch the documentary Cowspiracy, that shows the connection between the animal production industry and the Destruction of the planet.

    This video seams well searched. However, I don't know if shoes in whool can protect from the rain. I think it would really easily get damage by the rain and the environnement. In this case, you would have to shop always more shoes. Furthermore, the site good on you doesn't consider hem as good as you said for the use of whool, even if the source is good, and the absence of evidence of care of their employees. In my point of view, I don't know if this company is as ecofriendly as you sad.

      True. I don't doubt sheep and those who care for sheep have good lives but those who make the shoes... not always. They produce also in countries like Cambodia, Vietnam where you can abuse workers and dump chemicals coz yeah to produce bioplastics you need some nasty chemicals and they evaporate from the end product. I had luck that mine were made in Korea which is equiped in facilities that protect their workers from toxic fumes as well don't allow these chemicals to escape from facility. Only good vibes from them. Very comfortable shoes

      And that metane is consumed by plants that grow more aboundant in mountains and meadows because of them. But if one thinks it is good to turn rainforest into pasture then they need to deal with desertification in longer term like Argentina that grew greedy and could not pasture sheep only on pampas. All in all wool can be sustainable but you gotta check supplier

    Hello, as always this was a great and informative video, good job! It would also be incredibly helpful, if you could try to find out if the brand '4Ocean' is legit, because I'm not sure, whether I should buy a bracelet or not. They're basically a company, that claims that they produce bracelets made out of 100% recycled plastic they pulled from the ocean. I really wanna support their purpose, but to be completely honest, those bracelets are kind of expensive, therefore i need to be sure they are fully ethical. So I would appreciate it a lot if you could make a video about it.
    Thanks for taking time to read this. I wish you a great day!
