A New Run Commute

  • With parts of the Chicago Riverwalk closed to construction for what is likely the remainder of the winter, I need to find a new route for my run commute. While the bulk of it will remain the same, the trickiest part (getting from my office to the Chicago Lakefront Trail) now got a bit more difficult. In addition, I was also concerned because the new route seemed to shorten my run commute to a length shorter than what I was hoping for for my run commute. But upon closer inspection, it appears that my Stryd footpod is shorting me again.
    The new route works just fine, and the stryd inconsistencies aren't too big a problem for now (I'll investigate it further), so I'm just going to try and enjoy the run commute as it now is and enjoy the miles.
    Thanks for watching! Leave a comment to let me know you stopped by!

    Do you ever worry about air pollution whilst running by traffic?

      Ian Britton good question, I was thinking the same thing. I run before work and I have to take a route on a road where its well lit. I can taste the fumes sometimes particularly when its cold and the fumes don’t evaporate quickly.

      not really here in Chicago its kinda windy and the fumes get blown away pretty fast

      I run along Westside Highway in NYC, I don't really notice the fumes from the traffic

      It doesn't usually bother me. I try to get away from the roads as quick a possible.

    Sorry you are not "enjoying" your stryd. I have never had any issues. I would recommend going to a track and run a mile to make sure it is accurate. I hope you didn't try to "calibrate" it before as they recommend to not do that.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  5 років тому

      I strenuously doubt it is a calibration or measurement problem. My hypothesis is that it is a connection issue. My assumption is that, when the pod loses connectivity to the watch, it also stops collecting data during that period of disconnection.
      Stryd has reached out to me with some suggestions for resolving the connection issue. I just don't like the workaround.

    Any discussion on why to use a Stryd versus the Garmin Fenix or Sunnto GPS watch...Love to know as I use the Garmin Fenix to track my workout.. Thanks in advance

      It is believed that footpod is more accurate for pacing. And I'm primarily interested in the analytics stryd provides - the power number is intriguing.

    What earbuds are you using the raycon or the jabra? If u had to pick one for a runner running a marathon which would you choose? I need help between the two cant try both.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  5 років тому

      i am using neither in this particular video.
      i don't run with earbuds when racing anymore.
      i would not go with the raycon, as i had some connectivity issues.

    Wouldn't the GPS in your watch be more accurate than a footpod?

    • @kofuzi

      Many would say no, especially in an urban setting

    I've never had any off these issues with my Stryd and AW4 combo. Sounds like you have a bad unit.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  5 років тому

      Do you run with both aw4 and iPhone at the same time?

    • @gabegd23

      @@kofuzi Usually I just run with the watch. I've had some weird GPS mapping issues when running with both the phone and watch, so if I do take the phone, I turn off Bluetooth. This forces me to use the watch for my podcasts and music, which is OK, but I'm eagerly waiting for Spotify to come out with their stand alone AW app. Though I do have to say that my issues were back when I had my iPhone 6s, and I've since upgraded to a XR. I ran a race last weekend and took my phone and forgot to turn off Bluetooth, and the run tracking was fine. I'll have to do some more experimentation with this to see if it was my old phone that was the source of the issues. I really wish Apple would just give us a choice of whether we want to use the watch or phone GPS for workouts.

      That sucks about the stryd unit. Some observations from me, as a dedicated stryd user..
      1. The bluetooth headphones won't matter.. it is only a fight for connection between things that have paired with the stryd (phone and watch)
      2. The connectivity issues you are having impacts everything.. not just distance, but pacing etc.. I had known issues with fenix 5.. and it ruined my stryd experience.. but then changed to forerunner 935 and the love for stryd grew and grew.. especially with interval/fartleks outside where GPS is not good enough for those changes in tempo
      3. The biggest downside with stryd is accuracy.. it is too good. You will normally (depending on exact route) see that stryd records a longer distance than GPS as it is recording all those slight course changes that GPS smooths.. for races it means than I too factor that in when looking at my watch for pacing, to ensure I hit time goals.

    • @kofuzi

      i didn't think it was the bluetooth earbuds interfering. the bluetooth earbuds come in to the equation because i am currently unwilling to heed the Stryd representative's recommendation to turn bluetooth from my phone off. if i turn phone bluetooth off, i can't listen to music. i want to listen to music, so i can't turn phone bluetooth off. and so i have to live for a bit with the connection issue, i think.

    I'm using Stryd with my Garmin 235 and it works perfectly as a footpod. I have some discrepancies between the power center and the garmin data in terms of paces so I just use the Garmin ones as it also contains the power data. I'm also using this web app to have all the data in once place sporttracks.mobi and it works really well better than Strava at this point

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  5 років тому

      I like strava because it's device agnostic and everyone is there.

    • @DavidGomezSaavedra
      @DavidGomezSaavedra 5 років тому

      @@kofuzi I agree with that. I meant it more from analyzing the data. For example, with sporttracks if you use Stryd you can analyze your running efficiency, a ratio of the power and pace. This is a good indicator of your running economy if you manage to run at faster paces without generating more power.
