    I hope the crafting costs are fixed.... i hated seeing "50 gold to buy" and its still "50 gold to craft" 1 thing d&d should take from videogames is that crafting is cheaper than buying from a store

    In earlier Editions like 3.5 D&D players could take Feats to Craft Wondrous Items, Craft Armor Weapons , and Craft Rings, Wands.
    Spells like Permanacy. were really OP in adding Spell effects to items or players.
    Its about time they gave players and DMs the abilty to craft Magic Items again.

    You know, with the challenge rating thing, they could "add" monsters that have the same stats as old ones but at a higher/lower CR, while "tweaking" the old monster to fit its CR. They said they were adding higher/lower CR entries to certain monster "families", I wonder if some of those are just re-fitting the CRs so something that used to be over powered is now the bigger version of the thing, while the "standard" version at the previous CR is tamed down a bit. There were a lot of monsters that had issues with certain abilities that could for instance outright kill a player, or could easily knock everyone down at the CR level, and I would hate to see those monster abilities totally lost, but in a lot of cases if you go from "if you fail the save you die" to "if you fail the save you take damage" it basically completely changes the dynamic of that creature. So it would be cool if that version lived on under another name at a higher CR.

    You said you briefly reviewed a chapter we have been screaming to get for years? I understand the DnD team doing a brief quick video with the intention of doing a deeper look later, I hope. I really hope the chapter itself has some meat to it or we will be screaming for a much bigger book on crafting.
    At least tools are now more than a flavor splash. I'm glad they are deep diving on the crafting and items in general. This is reminding me quite a bit of 3.5 since that went into a decent amount of information on items and cost.
    I'm mostly excited for weapon\armor smithing rules. Potions and magic scrolls be nice as well. I suspect golemns to be in there as well. Things like vehicles might also be in there.

    They will prolly roll directly with the MM and DMG videos so they can sell them as a bundle now. It’s a smart move if the reception is poor and sales are low. The players preordering are more likely to buy all the books than a majority who are waiting to see. Especially given the digital landscape and DnD beyond - so much of the new material is to be available for free.

    One thing that I know they won't do, but that I wish they would. Is include "recipes" for magic items. Pathfinder telling me what it takes to make each magic item was so cool. It made my brain start firing up as I was like "Oh man, I could make one of these!" and because it wasn't vague I started looking for ways to pull it off. Now if the rules were less money focused, and still had wiggle room that a DM could just supply a different "ingredient" based on their judgement, that would be even better.
    Edited to add, this just sounds like Xanethar's crafting rules, but in one book.

    • @pheralanpathfinder4897
      @pheralanpathfinder4897 3 місяці тому

      Crafting rules are fun, but like everything it has drawbacks to go with the good aspects. Cheap easy magic items for a high magic setting don't fit with a low magic campaign setting.

    • @Lurklen
      @Lurklen 3 місяці тому

      @@pheralanpathfinder4897 Pathfinder usually didn't make them cheap...which was a major problem. Because due to the nature of the game, you *needed* certain magic items or you would just die. So the economy was always bonkers. But, when crafting, there was less ambiguity about what you needed to do.
      I'm not interested in flooding the game with magic items (though they are already very accessible in the base game) just a clarity in the rules for crafting them. I'm pro it being hard, though tying it to money does insane things to gold in these games. Better for it to be ingredient/spell based.

    • @pheralanpathfinder4897
      @pheralanpathfinder4897 3 місяці тому

      @@Lurklen then you have players taking a year or three of downtime to craft all the best items.
      I like having clear and specific rules. But it creates many headaches by including them in the core rules.
      I recently experimented with a setting where there are no magic item shops. Players had to develop contacts who could introduce them to potential sellers. Half loved the challenge and reward for getting a rare item others hated having gold and limited access to magic.
      Eventually they went to bigger cities and I gave them magic item shops because that's what Critical Roll does....

    • @Lurklen
      @Lurklen 3 місяці тому

      @@pheralanpathfinder4897 Oh, I've never done magic item shops. I mean for books and maybe some potions or the like, but not for just magical items. There will be magic item sellers, but they always pop up and disappear at random, or they make little trinkets as a side gig. (The one exception is the big magical city in my world, who has started a sort of franchise, but all the items are cursed and it's kind of a membership marketing scheme cooked up by a devil.)
      I mean, they'd still have to get the ingredients and spells, and it's still on the DM to adjudicate that stuff. If they do go for it and take all the time to adventure to get all that stuff, then a couple years of down time makes sense. Someone has to be making these things, why not high level parties? (That solution of yours is basically Xanethar's rules, and a really good and organic way of doing it, kind of making magic items like art trade. It's a good idea!)
      "I like having clear and specific rules. But it creates many headaches by including them in the core rules. "
      Hard disagree. I think having things be vague and indistinct and then relying on a bunch of 3rd party solutions for things people want to do in the game, creates more headaches than some clear well designed rules. But, as Dm you can always just not use em if you don't lke em.

    I've always hated the "rarity" given to magic items, and Baldur's Gate really crystalizes the issue: "Rarity" just labels how powerful something is, not actually how likely you are to find it. Aside from consumables and basic +1 items, most items are UNIQUE or there are a very small number of them in the game (like 2 or 3). The "rarity" could be listed as anything, but the reality is that there are "uncommon" items that are exactly as rare as the most important artifacts in the game: 1 of 1. While at the same time, for consumables rarity often goes in the other direction with shops being able to sell you an unlimited supply of potions and scrolls of any rarity. Now, the rules in the DMG for random loot do actually make sense with "rarity" - it's a measure of how likely you are to roll that item. But how many DMs these days do purely random loot? Just giving out random stuff even if the party can't use it, or if it messes with game balance, or breaks a part of the adventure? I suspect most DMs handle magic items a lot more like BG3 does. As such, "rarity" means absolutely nothing. Plus, it's sort of presumptive to say a +1 weapon is "uncommon" what if they're standard issue in the military? Rarity really depends on setting, and the adventure. While on the other hand the "wand of smiles" is common? I'm sorry, do regular people go around making each other smile using magic all the time? Can I buy such a thing in every corner store in the city? Rarity, power level, and value are all very different concept. The fact that the 2014 DMG treats them all as the same is just silly.

    • @Stormer13
      @Stormer13 2 місяці тому

      That's something I really like about PF2e, where the power level of an item is correlated to its item level while the rarity (common, uncommon, rare, or unique) is actually related to its presence within the world.

    @UltimateMustacheX 3 місяці тому

    The biggest point for me is crafting time. I understand rarer magic items taking longer, but two weeks for an uncommon or one week for a common magic item is ridiculous (especially if there's a quest to get the ingredients or recipe). I'm cool with a week if it's a few hours a day over the span of a week, with the option to work full time in only a few days. Or have the time decreased with more people helping you. But the time for those lesser items needs reduced (even if rarer ones stay the same). That way we can actually craft standard magic items. Not every campaign will have weeks of downtime, and you shouldn't have to insert such a drastic halt, just to craft one item.
    And if it stays relatively the same, but with the acknowledgment that an updated artificer will be made sometime in the following year or so, then I can accept that. Having the class designed for crafting get legit benefits in crafting time needed is acceptable to me, since the main character I plan on crafting with is an artificer. Of course this assumes they'll actually update the artificer at all. But enough has changed in this new PHB to warrant a proper update for them, if only to maintain the same types of upgrades other classes have gotten.
