8 billion people says...yes. I know everybody likes to blame Boomers. However, it's really a question of demographics. Boomers- population of the earth, 3.2 billion or fewer (that is the population in 1964, the last year of the Boom, year I was born- and one of the peak birth years so competition for everything growing up an utter nightmare since schools and such were completely overcrowded). But now, unlike back then, countries like China, etc. have caught up the West. After WWII it was US and nobody else, Europe was a mess and the rest of the world was pretty primitive. Now, you are not only competing against your fellow Americans but the entire world, most of whom will work for less (I would know, I have outsourced myself to Asia for the last 16 years and make less money than I used to in the US- although my cost of living is much lower so I am OK with it). So yes, it all sucks and it's not getting better, have a 35 year old daughter and I see how crap it is, just the BS interview process alone is maddening. Best of luck to all...
Yes, but for the most part, more people = more jobs. While worldwide population growth has its issues, I would argue this tough job market has more to do with the nature of the economy we live in (which you actually touched on a bit in your comment.) It makes me sad. We are in the future, and it’s not the one boomers had been dreaming of. Instead of us being so well off that our big dilemma is what to do with our free time, our big dilemma instead is survival. The communal idea of a nation is gone. Nation means nothing now outside of Olympic sports.
