    very good, i am happy to see this work! Congratulations!
    but can i ask something? Where is the death of Achilles? I did not see in this audio book. I think Achilles die in this book right?

    • @GreatBooksin10minutes
      @GreatBooksin10minutes  2 роки тому +9

      Aeneas briefly challenges Achilles in the original Iliad and almost loses his life over it. Virgil in the Aeneid does not really mention Achilles's death but it is safe to assume that the famous account of his death (Achilles's heel) was the common narrative at the time. There are quiet a few legends that branched out of The Iliad which mention Paris killing Achilles by an arrow but this is not really mentioned in the original Iliad. The full account of the death of Achilles was composed by a poet named Arctinus in a poem called The Aethiopis which was a part of the now mostly lost Epic Cycle. Achilles's funeral however is mentioned in the Odyssey.

    The dardanians are Albanians tho not Italians

    • @GreatBooksin10minutes
      @GreatBooksin10minutes  Рік тому +5

      Thank you for your comment. In the Aeneid, the association of the Dardanians with the Italians is a literary construct rather than a historical or factual assertion. The Aeneid is a work of literature that blends mythology, history, and Virgil's imagination to create a compelling narrative.
      The Dardanians had their own distinct cultural and linguistic identity, which was likely part of the Thracian or Illyrian cultural sphere. They interacted with various neighboring ancient peoples, such as the Illyrians, Thracians, and Macedonians. It is believed that their language belonged to the Paleo-Balkan group, which is considered distinct from modern Albanian.
      The modern national identities of Albania and Italy developed much later in history. Albania, as a nation-state, emerged in its current form in the early 20th century, while Italy as a unified country came into existence in the late 19th century. Therefore, it is not accurate to directly associate the Dardanians with either modern Albanians or Italians.
      It's important to remember that the Aeneid is a work of literature, not a historical account. While it draws on historical and mythological elements, it is primarily a poetic creation that reflects the cultural and political aspirations of Virgil's time.

    This was an interesting propaganda of the time. No historical base other than it provides a window into how the Roman’s wanted to perceive themselves

    • @Michael_the_Drunkard
      @Michael_the_Drunkard Рік тому +8

      That's not fully true. The Rutuli led by King Turnus in the novel were mentioned before the Aeneid in Cato the Elder's "Origines", which inspired the setting of the epic. The king Latinus also appears in Hesiod's Theogony and is only slightly different. Even in Greek mythology, it is indicated that Aeneas was the 2nd best Trojan hero after Hector and was destined to become the leader of the surviving Trojans. How can one not write an epilogue the Iliad with him as the protagonist?
      While it was obviously also used to promote the reign of Augustus, the details of the locations, the tribes, the monarchs (especially Dido), the Gods were drawn from earlier Greek and Roman sources and thus is a great part of distinct Roman mythology. Interestingly, historians like Livy the Elder and Dionysius of Halicarnassus treated the Aeneid as historical and used it to explain the origins and travels of many pre-Roman peoples.
