  • The exercise company Peloton sells a stationary bike for $1,995. It’s recently exploded in popularity, surpassing even the spin giant SoulCycle in customers, data from last year suggests. Equipped with a wifi-enabled touch-screen, the bike allows you to join high-intensity spin classes remotely and, according to the company, get a studio-grade workout from anywhere.
Over the course of two weeks, Producer Benji Jones put it to the test, taking a 45-minute class every day. And to measure his progress, he did a before and after fitness assessment - which revealed some pretty surprising results.

I've done 6 months of 30-minutes Pelaton rides. AFter every other ride, I did 20 minutes of strength training. Slight change of the diet to eliminate sugar and most carbs. Tremendous results. Everyone is different, but for me, my issue was sticking to a routine and actually putting in the work. The Pelaton created the addictive habit and everything else followed. Highly recommend if you simply do the strength training after.

Correct training requires taking rest days between training sessions. This follows the general principle that exercise stresses the body, so makes you temporarily weaker, and you get stronger during recovery, i.e., when you rest. You incorrectly did the same workout every day, and therefore got the resulting fatigue and start of injury.

    • @justrobin1234

How many days rest in between cycling sessions do you recommend? Thanks!

    • @ilanpi
      @ilanpi 5 років тому +96

@@tsandphotog It depends on the length and intensity of your workouts, age and fitness level. Generally speaking, short highly intense exercise should be done fully rested, so with one or two days rest. With increasing age, more rest is required. There is also "active recovery," the principle that you can recover faster if you do a very low intensity workout. If you're serious about achieving a specific goal, such as a race, then you need to consider long term training regimens such as microcycles and macrocycles. I recommend reading a book on the basic principles of exercise physiology.

That's funny. The "therapy" language the instructors use is one of my favorite parts - I just feel like it's a very holistic experience if you want it to be. I have the bike and love it - I also don't take 45 min cycling classes every day - I do strength classes, yoga, and stretching, etc. You can make it a very balanced experience. I love the experience and the workouts and instructors are the best in the world I'm convinced. That's what set's this bike apart and why it's worth the price....the instructors and the community feel you get. I can ride with my friends out of state and compete with them. I love it!

Well this is spot on (and obvious) to what I would have expected with ANY endurance sport. Cardio and Vo2 max improves at the sacrifice of muscle. That's why endurance athletes are lanky.
Being an avid cyclist outdoors and on Zwift and having done my fair share of spin classes ... it all comes downs to whatever works for you. I find Zwift more engaging and much more competitive to a spin class but Peloton is a nice set up. Unless you are absolutely time crunched or a gym is way too far, I would say a spin class at your local gym would be a good alternative (not the boutique $$$ spin gyms). If you want true performance gains that translates to outdoor gains, Zwift or Trainer Road is the way to go. Zwift is the real disruptor.. so much that professional riders are using it and it's being integrated into pro races - giro d'italia for example. They are creating an e-sport and teams like Data Dimension have competitions to scout for the next upcoming star!

I really like my Peloton bike. I bought it prior to my knee replacement, my road mileage was getting so low I was getting out of shape. The Peloton enabled me to do a little every day so I went into the surgery in pretty good shape. After the surgery it really made a quick recovery possible. I am six months out and usually am in the top 10% of riders. Benji remarked about instructors as he was showing Jess King. I did her once and she was so new age spacey I never tried again. The Brits, Ben and Leanne are good, so is Olivia. I love all the data the Peloton provides. Not cheap, but worth it, IMHO.

I was always skeptical about an expensive indoor bike but holy crap! This bike changed my life, I had all sorts of knee pain and after 3 months of working out on my new awesome bike I can't say anything else other than thank you guys, yeah it's expensive and not for everybody because most people I know can't afford it just yet, but after trying mine they want it, well duh, I drove the new ferrari 488 and I want it too but I can't afford it, at least not yet, but that's what you're getting here, I was iffy about it but I've used it every single day, the 1st 4-5 days are the hardest, getting started, but man, I changed my life and I just wanted to let ppl know that it is worth it, my knees are so much better and my legs are getting a bit toned, but it's only been 3 months... can't wait to see what happens after a whole year.

I live in the west coast and was in Hoboken for work so I couldn’t resist the chance to go to the city one night for a live class. I too had the same issue where the metrics were WAY off. I concluded though that the bikes in the studio are different than those sold to use in the home. I don’t know if I’m right but I know 40 resistance at home is easy cruising at 40 resistance in the studio was like 55 at home.
Also, I’d be curious to know how much better your results could have been if you had incorporated a few rest days. Many of the instructors often stress the need for rest days.

    • @bruces12

Monisola, because the seat will get in the way of your thighs if it's wider and if it's soft and cushy, it'll actually make it harder to gain any real benefit from spinning (your leg muscles need a firm surface for your butt to pedal efficiently) plus your back will be in agony after about 1/2 hour from lack of support.

There are also running, walking, yoga, outdoor, and strength training workouts that can be used to mix up the routine. This isn’t a very fair assessment of Peloton as a whole. I tend to do the power walk and running classes with strength training. At roughly 280 I find them tough but encouraging and Indo a class almost every day! I pick 1-2 days a week as rest day. I think you were wise to get measured before and after, and I think you did well during your two-week test, congrats on the fat loss and VO2 improvement. And really, you were in good shape and weight to start, so it's not like you had to lose a giant belly or anything. And for me, ten years ago I returned to fitness during a winter of indoor training at a Gold's Gym and I did so by doing strings of 20- or 30-minute rides on a stationary bike, with some weights and calisthenics in between. And that, combined with a controlled diet, got me back on track with my health and I am still thankful for that. And all in all, it was fun to shed the pounds and watch DVDs on a player which I perched on a cup holder or something.

I bought a peloton little over a year ago to stay fit in the mountain bike off season.
I was definitely skeptical that I’d even use it.
I rode all winter religiously hour to hour and half of classes 4 days a week.
I did have knee pain at first until I got fit dialed in.
Then spring mud season was over trails opened and not only did my legs gain massive size gains my climbing ability was off the charts.
My balance was a bit rusty but the strength heart and breathing endurance was worth every penny.
I mean huge time difference’s and the ease of just pedaling made focus dialed in as well.
I will also mention this riding was mixed with squats deadlifts and leg presses which was my normal yearly routine.
Sure you could put I pad on stationary but it’s the peloton ecosystem that helps keep you interested

To each their own. I love my peleton. I intergrade it with weights and power walking which I also do on peleton on demand. Also changed my eating ( not diet). At 59 I feel great. More energy, feel good about myself not looking like I'm 70. Overall peleton has been good for not only physical well being but mentally as well. Always will be nay sayers but proof is in the pudding and here I sit ready to eat. Live well all.

"It's taking the cycling world by storm."
This is far from the truth. It may be taking the fitness industry by storm, but that's not the cycling world. People who are interested in spin classes generally are not cyclists - they are gym-goers; they are fitness people. The two tribes are largely separate.
Cyclists have road bikes and smart trainers and Zwift and Trainer Road. Fitness people have spin bikes and exercise classes.

Either the cycling world hates the fitness industry or the cycling world and the fitness industry are the same thing. It's not logical to have it both ways, angry internet man.
But you're not completely wrong. Many cyclists do look down on the group exercise/spin class thing. And I assume the reverse is true, though I cannot be sure, as I am a cyclist, not a gym guy.

@@luke_5187 Cycling has a different culture. We're very much into coffee, long socks, tan lines, tight clothing, and shaving body hair. We all have a sense of adventure that drives our workouts, rather than obsessing over our physique. It's a nice and welcoming community. People in gyms are often wearing headphones. People on bikes stop on the trail to help strangers who have a flat tire. We have a network of people all over the world willing to share their homes with us when we are on multi-day bike tours. These are just a few reasons why cycling culture is different from fitness/gym culture.
