5:49. This -- Malus just looking at you while you're on his hand -- this one frame right here is my favourite detail in the entire game and the primmest example of why SotC is an absolute masterpiece.
Throughout the game the Colossus' eyes are used to convey how they feel; blue eyes show they are calm and docile while orange show they are aggravated and hostile, which is a motif used throughout the game in different ways. For example, throughout Gaius' fight their eyes are blue, its only when you start fatally stabbing them its when their eyes turn orange -- Gaius never viewed you as a threat, from the start they just thought they were playing with you.
Now back to Malus. When you climb Malus you can see all the points marking a deceased Colossi, so Malus must have been waiting knowing what was happening and that they were going to be next at some point, they were waiting for you. But then you climb on Malus and they just look at you, and their eyes turn blue. They are not attacking you any more, they are inspecting you, realising you are just a human and a thinking, feeling creature. Just as you have been humanising the Colossi the entire game despite having to kill them, Magus offers you the same level of empathy.
Absolutely incredible.
Beautifully written. Glad someone besides me noticed his curiousity. This game is an ART!
it could just be him giving up though, knowing his Demise is presumably preordained
a lot of the Colossi seem to be stuck in contraptions and buildings, they seemingly cannot get out of and that seem to be build for that one specific purpose of keeping them in there, like Kuromori in that Colosseum, Celosia guards the very flame it fears, Barba is trapped in the ruins and Quadratus seemed to be trapped behind that wall at the beach as well until it broke free
and Malus? He sits immobile on a plateau filled with barricades and tunnels, the ideal countermeasure against his method of self defense, with one of them going right underneath him - his own garments even have walkways and fences on them, as if they were meant to be ascended
I think that someone made specific arrangements to see the Colossi killed at some point to end the ritual, to set Dormin free or see him banished, whatever may occur and that Malus at least has enough self awareness to know this, knowing that you are encroaching and that there is no escape, he literally cannot run away, so falling into despair he rains his magic down on Wander but the moment he steps foot onto his garments it´s over for Malus
So when he has his executioner right in front of him it could be many things,
it could be disbelief, it could be astonishment or perhaps curiosity and wonder over what may be the first living being to visit him up there on his lonely plateau.
But ultimately I feel like this could almost be a gesture of acceptance
I don´t know how much of a sense of Self the Colossi possess or whether they have any at all, but considering they reel back in pain when wounded they should possess at least some level of conscience so perhaps Wanders ascent to this stoic giant can also be seen as a kind of liberation
So these things are enough to make a game masterpiece?
@@umukzusgelos4834 I agree with the colossi atleast having some level of conscience, perhaps as much as humans do. Some of them looked pretty fucking angry when attacked like Argus and Malus displayed both curiosity and acceptance like you put it.
This other guy in another video made a fairly good point of why Malus was so aggressive to begin with: If you look around on top of his head you notice that you can actually see every single one of the 15 light pillars each marking a dead colossi. Malus was there witnessing it when they suddenly started to appear and he knew what it meant. He was there unable to move basically counting seconds to his turn. And when the 15th pillar appeared I think its understandable that he immediately opens fire when the player enters into his domain.
I saw that comment on another page yesterday and came to post it as well. Really drives the morbidity of this tragic game.
Killjoy45 holy shit and the sad music fits in well
And also because is in his instinct to do it. The colossus were made with the porpuse of protect the fragments of Dormin's soul, that's why they turn agressive with the player soner or later (except from Phalanx).
@@estrellaescobar5723
Quadratus is passive aswell if you do nothing.
Doesn't explain why he's so curious about you
I just feel sad about him, everytime you hurt malus he doesn't tries to attak or hurt you, he just put his hand over the injure like patching, and triying to heal himself, even looking at you with empathy and curiosity when you are in his hand, and not with anger or cruelty, he is not bad or evil he was just scared until, he looked at you noticing you are a human, and letting you live feeling empathy towards you
Notice how he shoots faster when you get closer. He's scared, he's panicking, he doesn't want to die like all of his brethren.
If he knew he'd die he wouldnt inspect you when you were on his hand.
BALDICANO, Donzel Romaire and then you fall off climb him again and he inspects you all the same lol.
Funny how this can be beaten in the span of 8 minutes when you know exactly what you're doing. I remember spending HOURS when I first fought him! Obviously I can beat him much faster now, but either way I loved every minute of it.
That's where Hard mode comes in. I believe I managed to get to hard mode 10 or 13.
Same here. I've beaten it on hard mode so many times that I know it like the back of my hand now.
Imagine if they made it be able to move about like the other colossus
chris herbert that would be scary and very hard his shaking is enough especially the physics of the fall damage and everything that would be a tough fight
Then his mechanics would be different and who knows maybe easier oer maybe harder.
Maybe he’d do a little twirl to show off his lovely dress
At 5:11, this could have been over for Wander, if Malus just closed his hand hard.
He would have also impaled himself
Well colossus are merciful creature
Argus was the main on who could have done that, Malus’ hand looks like he can’t exactly make a fist out of it.
Yea, he makes a fist in the first few seconds, but barely. Its not a tight fist, doe.@@hippityhoppitygetoffmyprop1000
This game is just incredible.
the battle ost for malus is called demise of the rutual.
Riku yoooo, nice! I love Kingdom Hearts
Rutual?
Zerei esse jogo que foi marco na minha infância quando eu tinha um ps2 e agora pude zera-lo no ps4 isso foi uma honra ter tido a oportunidade de jogar esse jogo obrigado team ICO
this colossus is very epic
Wander
This boss was really hard for me I was about to deliver the final blow but then he knocked me off and I died I haven’t played the game since
the best game of ps2
Monster Hunter Ehem
kappa
Springfield Pervert Shadow Of The Follow us wasn't even on PS2 LOL
George Christidis Wtf are you talking about?
Springfield Pervert Illuminati Music*
Great gameplay, congrats!
Thanks team ico for this game l really enjoyed it, it was a fun experience
I think you skipped the part where you fall off 37 times
This game fucked me up as a kid.
I don’t see what everyone finds so difficult about this colossi , in my opinion he was one of the easiest ones to kill.
I´m so bad at this battle it´s unheard of...
I think I may have fallen off his bloody stone skirt more then all my deaths in my playthrough
that one part were you have to shoot from his hand is so... urgh...

(fighting malus be like)
and malus gives me creeps
Ive never played but it looks quite easy to kill the colossus, am I wrong? It looks epic af but easy
Juanma Jg Not easy at all. Trust me. XD
xBoolin Hmm is this game available for PS4?
What monster?🤔
GOOD KILL BRO
pica
pentium 2 graphics better than PS4
pero que es un bot jugando ? jaja
This boss is fucking bullshit. Way too repetitive
este es el canal en ingles de dalas review :v
The eyes of Malus bother me. Once you're climbing on it, it's just confused. It only briefly enrages when you shoot or stab it. The rest of the time it just looks at you, wondering what you're doing.
i know right, he is also troll, when you climb on his right hand, he just stares like you like "im tired, do you want some sandwitches?" and then boom, he turns hes hand and you fall
Thomas Martin all the bosses in this game were basically minding their own business when some little shit decided to start killing them so he could fuck his dead girlfriend the collosus ARE confused
I agree, it was selfish of The Wander to think only of himself. But he was fooled tho when it was all said and done. And it did backfire, because he wouldnt even beable to see her comeback to life as the adult he was, but as a baby. Now that was a troll move.
Of course it would. If an ant climbed up your arm and started attacking you, which you hardly felt at all, wouldn't you be more intrigued than enraged? Your response likely wouldn't be "What the hell is it doing!? Get off me, you fiend!", more likely, you'd be like "Aww, look, it thinks it's people...".
Do you notice this colossus only use hand to body
Imagine if Wander dropped his sword before the final stab... Oh lord
With every deflect his sword takes is another risky chance to fuck up while staying balanced on a colossus
I never understood why the colossi with hands just didn't use their hands to grab him and pick him off of them
it probably would Make the game way to hard
not smart enough I suppose.
animeship123 exactly bro it is stupid they slow as crap
malus at the very least cannot bend over to grab him, he's stuck standing up.
animeship123 I know right but then he grab his head while he is dying
I like how when you fight every other boss you have this intense music, but now that made your way to the final boss the music turns sad probably to show off that what you’re doing is wrong and you should feel guilty. God this game is powerful
HI
It doesn't feel wrong to me. I fell off this Colossus 15 times and died twice. I also rage quit and haven't played the game since. So, I would be very happy to kill this Colossus.
@@moncalimarimoncalimari8964 Gameplay-wise.. yes, but the story of Malus is kinda sad by itself.
I played this while eating chocolate brownies to give me enough energy as the green screen wasn't sufficient enough. This boss is deep found it really difficult which made my skin go purple. Worse thing about it was that they know I know and that front door scene was just a ploy? So just a verbal forgiveness was enough without informing family members of such atrocities not an option?
Always felt sad after defeating each Colossus :( poor things
Ahmed360 same here
Ahmed360, me also. I felt sorry for them. The player/hero character in this game is essentially a murderer.
Ahmed360
Now, in Wander's defense, most of the Colossi actually tried to kill him on sight rather than wait to be hit by a bow and arrow and be stabbed in the leg.
So technically, most of the game was in self-defense.
@@autobotrenegade221 Because he was invading they home?
@@autobotrenegade221 Yes, you're right. I'll go and burglarize someone's home and shoot them because they were coming at me with a bat. It's okay, your honor, it was just in self defense.
He's LARGE!
He's in CHARGE!
And His name is John ce- er MARGE!
BANE?
HE'S A BIG GUY FOR YOU!
Wtf?
Only colossus to realistically react to being stabbed
Vegetarian Soylent-Green pretty sure all of them felt the pain from that sword.
every colossus reacts
@@Unknown-sv9fm They meant react like a person. He reaches for the spot thats in pain like most people do
Ya all of them just wiggling around trying to get rid of us
I don't think of Shadow of the Colossus as a game but as a playable movie. Its all just a story with no words.
Viscious202 it doesn't give the full story so the players fill in the blanks
That's not bad storytelling it's visual storytelling, the best kind of storytelling, also leaving story elements to the viewer's discretion is also good storytelling, adds to mystery and interaction
@@liamcurran5612 That's not good storytelling, the story purposefully leaves out important plot elements.
"Who is this girl that we are traveling are a forbidden land killing giant monsters for?"
"How did we aquire this sword that lights up weak points on said giant monsters?"
"Who are we playing as?"
"Why is the land baren except for some birds and one specie of lizard?"
"Why does the ceiling talk to me?"
"Why does the plot start in the last ten percent of the story?"
And so on and so forth. I had fun playing the game, but I don't get why people think it has a good story. You don't have a reason to care about anyone in said story.
@@Cotton_Mouth yeah exactly
@@Cotton_Mouth lol what? Literally all that shit is answered or you can easily guess it from the information presented to you.
"Who is this girl we are traveling are a forbidden land killing giant monsters for?"
A girl named Mono who was likely sacrificed by the protagonist's tribe
"How did we acquire the sword?"
Wander probably stole it from the village before he left
"Who are we playing as?"
A young man named Wander (his name is in the manual and credits btw)
"Why is the land barren?"
Because everybody who built those structures and lived there are gone now and likely were wiped out
"Why does the ceiling talk to me?"
Because a) magic, and b) Dormin can't manifest as anything else other than a ray of light if you dont kill all the colossi
"Why does the plot start in the last ten percent of the story"
It doesn't
It's not some super complex story but it doesnt have to be, and in fact was deliberately made as minimalistic as possible by design. It's compelling enough to keep you invested and there is plenty of mystery surrounding the colossi and what exactly they were used for or what their relations to the people of the land were (noticed many of them are secured inside structures while i was playing). It did exactly what it was set out to do - keep you playing and thinking
that arrow to the shoulder had me raging. Took way longer than it should have
Dude, me right now. Literally rage quit like 4 times today because I couldn't do it.
That shot is so hard to hit on the fly
Glad to see im not the only one
I really dont like that part of this boss' design because i think nothing signals that this should do this - why shouod the player expect that to work if mechanically the other colossi dont- you do interact with them trough the bow and arrow but this bit doesnt seem like its part of the repertoire- its too specific
I would climb to that wrist of his, bring out the bow "where tje fuck is the aiming reticle? Wjeres the aim??????" And then fall now time to climb again
Its a great game but clunky as fuck
Stab the top of his hand he will be stunned and that will give you time to shoot his shoulder
Malus actually made me quit the game. The way he moves his hands made it almost impossible for me to climb onto his arm the whole fight.
Hamz If you couldn't beat Malus I don't know how you got to him. Pretty easy fight really.
Made do the same. Tip, stab his hand before you get out your bow. Will make him stay still for a bit
HamZ yah same here, the last colossus was just poorly designed. It’s so tedious and nothing is exciting about it - you find your way up for such a long time only to fall down again like wtf - I was so disappointed they didn’t save the best for ladt
@@strangeeric9760 I played it on PS3, I really don't follow.
Pulling my hair out right now trying to kill this bloody thing! I agree with the mechanics and the hand movements!... I'm this close to throwing my controller and quiting the game
I dunno why, but that moment at 2:41 is pretty cool!
It was cool because it was cinematic as hell.
i think its funny how malus inspects you while you are climbing him. Almost like a child looking at a pill bug.
A wood louse?
Malus overall seems to be like a child. It's afraid of you, yes, but it's also very curious and clearly not fully aware of what's going on. Makes its death so much sadder...
I wonder how many people are actually aware that you have to stab his hand to get him to stay still...
I just kept thinking 'holy crap is it going to start walking or flying or something!??
sotc was like the dark souls of my childhood
Damien no. Stop comparing everything to that trash game.
KuraudoSutoraifu7 the games not trash youre trash.
What? Both games have almost the same narrative (no one explains you the situation with words or in a explicit way) but they're completely different. I don't understand your comparison.
Actually the from software director (the mind behind Dark Souls) said that it was Shadow of the Colossus what inspired him to make games, and proved that they could be considered as art.
@@KuraudoSutoraifu7 someone propably died too many times while playing Dark Souls ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Malus could have easily ended this by tearing wander apart with his hands.
This one kind of reminds me of the robot from 1999 The Iron Giant.
I prefer the ps2 version and ps3 version over ps4 version they just give an entirely different vibe that the ps4 version cannot capture.
Malus kinda reminds me of atoms the robot in real steel
Nope
It does actually.
Oh yes good shit I will never look at him same way as before
But someone now stands to get in thy way...
Make haste, for time is short...
Playing the ps4 version and I am so goddamn frustrated. Almost beat the shit out of the controller. Pretty ridiculous level- and not in a good way.
THANK YOU. I’m so glad I’m not alone
@@dashman8499 I literally just beat this guy.😭😷😩
2:42-2:50
Wander: NO!!! I DIDN'T COME THIS FAR TO BE A KENTUCKY FRIED CORPSE FOR SOME GIANT SKIRT-BOY!!!
LMAO
Malus' death animation looks like a dramatic reaction to someone getting roasted badly.
2:42 is funny to me for some reason.
I remember this fight being a lot harder because Malus was thrashing around constantly and gave me a VERY small window of time to attack. Maybe it was bugged or something.
In the PS4, Wander get recovery frames on the ground every time Malus shots you, in the OG PS2 and PS3 versions, you don't have recovery frames, so he could just stunlock you to death, and it made the fight way harder and fun that way imo
This is my favorite colossus. It always reminded me of the giant robot from the News of The World album cover by Queen.
You can't help but feel bad for him, the whole time you're on him he's completely hesitant to actually hurt you. It's like if Cronos from GoW III was the Iron Giant
I think Malus looks eerily similar to Chernabog from Fantasia.
Captain Landrover Never thought about that
But how?
@@bryanlettow4389 both of them are giant beings stuck to one place.
It makes me sad of how he dosent try to kill you when your on him and that sad music
imagine if malus started walking....
I just quit this game because of this fight. This game's controls are so bad i don't understand how it became a classic. I have a job and a life so i can't spend hours in my parents basement perfecting this. I stuck it out this far but this is autistic.
Just got the trophy for finishing in hard in less than 5h41m28s PS4 version, i must say falling from his head to the ground and getting killed by his proyectiles is one of the most devastating and stressful things i have ever experienced, ironically when i finished i did with less than 5h but still the pressure of not knowing is just horrible.
I did hard time attack in like 2 hours so I had the queens sword and then massacred the rest in the remaining 3 I had for that trophy. The cloak of deception can get you right to him as well.
Does anyone think this one is just a bit underwhelming? Love this game but for a final boss it was honestly easier than most of the other ones
I know they are slow but could they not think ahead and aim where he is going to go instead of where he is? Its all for the gameplay, though so I get why they did it this way. Wouldnt be very amazing if the colossi just squashed you like a bug lol.
Hung Phan singular - colossus plural - colossi
They also don't appear terribly strategic.
Is Malus meant to be a prisoner? It's legs are in a tube in the ground and he can't climb out of or move. The others are like wild animals but he seems to almost let him self be killed at the end.
This is bullshit, there must be an easier way?
It's not about selfishness, it's about love. This game is a fucking master piece.
looks like wander doesnt fly around on malus`s head when he shakes it a little
The boss music.....
This game is so hard.
haha go play dark souls
+dportal844 You noob
+THEBRUTALGAMER BR I hate difficult games man.
PLAY DARK SOULS HAHAHA
Shadow of the colossus is a cake
dark souls is soooooo easy ;)
I call bs because when I climb on his head in he exact same spot he thrashes for a full minute. This version is WAY more docile.
Lo peor es que tenes que derrotar a este y 15 colosos mas para que un viejo tire una espada al agua y te derrote con el poder de los 16 monstruos adentro
For anyone who is struggling with the 5:49 shot, you can stab his hand with the sword and the colossus will stabilzate for you to shoot his shoulder, its a lot easier hope this help
You save me, thanks!!
Played this years ago and could not figure out how to get past the right arm. Never would have thought to shoot an arrow into left shoulder. Replaying now and am stuck there again so I had to look up this video.
Sahdow of colossus Undertaker vs edge wrestlemania 24 16-0 undertaker colossus deaman 25-2 wrestlemania 36 aj styles phenomenal colossus
This is so sad I don't know if I could bare to fight him. Or phalanx. Like we are definitely the villain in this game, like a tiny annoying mosquito
I cannot stomach.
so I'm watching this trying to figure out how to get from the hand to the head and my games music some how gets in sync with the videos music, sounds really cool tbh
honestly the way of getting onto his shoulder is pretty fucking stupid. who the hell could figure that out? especially since it's very difficult to even stand normally on that hand.
Kinda reminds me about that colossus that he is going to dance cause of what he look like
This game is very depressing
I killed malus with less stamina and health by eating the poisoned fruits
So is there a trick to staying on his hand? I've been trying for the past hour and can't stand up long enough to do what I need to do
Kyrant Stab the hand
all 16 collosus were created to seperate dormin yet the bridge connecting both lands were tied to it as well
man the colossus are not bad i fell bad
Bruh i didnt know when i get to him i must climb on that side
God, I would love another game that is like a prequel to this one, where you see the creation of each Colossi and they're purpose and meaning. Possibly encounter a more fleshy Dormin to chase around and fight down gradually trapping bits of his spirit into the Colossi themselves to give them life and trapping Dormin within the forbidden lands using the colossus' as 16 different keys/guardians to lock him up from wreaking whatever havoc he unleashed before.
If you want juste one reason why PS2 Sound design's better than the PS4 remake : 0:23 - 0:31 ^^
This boss fight is shit on ps4. They remodeled his wrist to make it thinner, and it’s nearly impossible to stand on your feet to aim with the bow.
You have to stab his hand before attempting to shoot at this shoulder. Otherwise he's just gonna keep moving it
Ale DG I totally forgot about that move. I was literally trying so hard to stand on his wrist and hand, fell down at least 15 times cause my stamina ran out. I was wondering why it was nearly so impossible to keep still and shoot... but when i shot his hand with an arrow by accident his hand became still and I was like.... oh... lol
Exactly what happened to me. I was so frustrated and felt so dumb afterwards. Although it could be argued that he doesn't have a sigil on his hand to indicate that weakspot like with the other colossi, so it's understandable why no one would ever suspect that.
Very true. It definitely left people completely hanging, LITERALLY lol. I remember defeating him on ps2 before so I thought I was screwed if they changed his behaviour in the remaster. Its a final boss overall, has to be the trickiest of them all but boy, I hate this colossus so bad
5:11 for those who are struggling with the hands ):
Love the game but boy are the controls and camera made by goofy from Disney... The most annoying crap ever... If I hear one more 'uh' in going to jump him if the nearest cliff. Raaaaaaaa :O
I can speak for everyone who's ever played this game by saying fuck this boss, fuck this boss entirely.
Love ur vids!!!
Epic game of all time
I fell too many times from that derpy hand trying to shoot a bow
William Fournier I'm stuck on that same part. ..it's driving me fucking crazy!
I never did it but right after I jumped from the left hand when he raises it right across to chest platform lol. Probably not meant to do it that way but it worked out. I cut it close on stamina stabbing his head.I think I was a better gamer overall during the ps2 days lol because I don't remember having an issue with the clunky controls. I just made it work haha
William Fournier yeah, I finished it the exact same way about an hour after I posted that. ..I tried about 10 times to jump from the first arm to his chestplate. ..I was so happy to be done...I really hated this boss fight. ..the camera was super, super aggravating. ..I must have fallen off him over 30 times.
