That's awesome and brings back so MANY memories. My father had an old riding mower that sat in the garage for years. When I was 12 (1975 ). I decided to discover how it worked and what was wrong with it. I completely disassembled it and because the original manual was still around, I was able to order the needed parts (clutch assy and bushings) even the foot pads and decals. I repainted It and returned It to like new condition. I believe it was a Huffy brand. It was also when I learned how to rebuild a 5 horse B/S engine and set me on journey to acquiring many Briggs and Stratton service tools. 130902 I remember was the model number for that same engine used on your rebuild. Yeah, built to last. It took too long to build and materials would be too expensive now. Plus, if they break every 6 months they can sell you parts to fix it that will only last 3 months. It's an expensive bullshit cycle nowadays

I am hoping he just didn't film it when he did or something. And getting every dimple from rust and cast out would be nice but very time consuming. For a machine that will see heavy use and grass will probably sit on it often after a mow I do think the restore was appropriate. I am not sure if I will ever have the time to do anything close to this level unless it is a small project.
Just subbed, very nicely restored, this mower is a gem. I will tell you one thing you will never see, you will never see any mowers built today 75 years from now being restored like this, why, because everything that is made today is just junk. Look at how well built this mower is, the beefy ness of the material used, these things were made to last forever if properly taken care of. The junk that’s made today just makes me sick how we became a throwaway society. Guys like this that can fix things and make them work again are becoming very rare!

Terrific job! You should be proud of your work. May I offer a few suggestions: 1) There should be some oil applied inside of the part of the recoil clutch that goes over the crankshaft. In fact, there's a small oil hole on the top of this part, and there's supposed to be a small piece of felt inside to maintain some oil between the clutch and crankshaft. 2) I would have put more grease into the differential and transmission. What you did was probably fine, but more wouldn't have hurt. 3) I would have put a thin film of grease on the mower housing arbor shaft and axle shafts before assembly. Doing this will slow (but not eliminate) the onset of rust between these shafts and bearings and make future disassembly easier. 4) Always clean all rust and dirt off of the bottom end of the crankshaft before removing the lower part of the crankcase. In this engine, the crankshaft bearing surface is the same diameter as the external part of the crankshaft. Pulling the lower crankcase off without cleaning everything off of the crankshaft can score the lower crankcase bearing. 5) I'll never understand why so many people use WD-40 as a penetrating oil, which it is NOT! There are far better products available for this application. Again, great job and great editing. I enjoyed watching you work.
