Trust me...it was!! I saw them in concert, layne was and is in a vocal league all his own.You could physically FEEL his vocals emanating from his chest. I was less than 30 feet from stage, you could hear his voice over the microphone
Someone in an interview said his voice was so powerful he could hear his acoustic voice apart from what was cpming through the speakers at a concert. Yeah that's loud
Layne had such a celestial voice, I’d always thought it was like ink, lucid and flowing. Jerry’s opening to this song is so hauntingly beautiful. And with the bass, drums, guitar… this will forever be my favourite song
Sure, reasonable people can disagree on matters of taste. This is transcendentally beautifully to me. I just listened to it 6 times in a row. The naked expression, the control, the style, the vulnerability, the aggression, the rage... so many words, but never enough to really describe it. I ache for more Layne Staley and the world only gets a finite amount. So grateful and so sad. I'm just stunned and amazed by him, even after so many repetitions.
Becuse grunge was the last type of music that conved emotion modern rap tries to make sad music but it fails to kurt and laynes and chris singing which made me cried
Layne & Jerry - 2 voices and 2 musical talents have rarely ever fit together so perfectly. This song is a masterpiece that will never age. If this came out on the radio today it would still blow everyone out of the water.
Layne's voice is mystical....magical!! AIC was just here in South Bend a few Weeks ago, and while they put on a decent show, it was a far cry from how they sounded while Layne was alive!! RIH LAYNE STALEY 1967-2002. ☮
The first time I heard this, my sister picked me up at the a/port in NJ, and this came on the radio, I literally, told everyone in the van to STFU! including my dad, so I could hear this song. I was floored by his voice. One of the few great memorable singers of all time. He is certainly missed
Unfortunately he got worse over time (if you could call it worse, he was still fucking fantastic) starting with the demos all the way through all the albums all the way to his last song with AiC. He was a better singer in Facelift than in Dirt because he could hit some notes better, and he sounded a lot better in Dirt than in the self titled.
Wow this isolated vocal track you can really hear how powerful Laynes singing is. He was a talented guy. Layne and Jerry harmonized very well together they were meant to sing together and that shows on every AIC album and EP.
Layne was the single best thing to come out of the "Grunge" movement and one of Rock's best voices period. I still miss his voice and lyrics. Irreplaceable.
kborn000 Yes! Yes! Oh but YES AIC is totally Grunge. . . everyone knows it's a toss up between Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Mother Love Bone, Screaming Tree's, STP, Soundgarden, Hole, Mudhoney ... oh I can go on, ok - but we all know AIC IS #1 so I'll stop. Try "Google'ing" it.
kborn000 Tad late for this post, but I agree. I've always thought they were more metal or rock at the very least. Either way, who cares what their genre was?
The whole thing is amazing. But starting at 2:35. it's god tier level. I remember reading a comment about an Alice in Chains video that said if dead men could sing they'd sound like Layne Staley.

He wanted his dope. He interrupted my conversation with Darrell and Darrell being the sweetheart he was, apologized for Phil, gave me a hug and left.
I've seen this band more than any other band (6 times, 5 with Layne, 3 with Mike Starr)... the thing that keeps bringing me back is how soulfull this band feels....and the harmonies they create in their songs. Its something that is hugely underappreciated and sorely missed in alot of music today.
Layne sings most of this song. Here, I'll break it down for ya - (Jerry) Know me broken by my master. Teach thee on child (Layne joins Jerry) of love hereafter. Then Layne sings the chorus. (Jerry) Drifting body it's sole desertion. Flying not yet (Layne joins Jerry) quite the notion. Layne sings the rest of the song. I can't believe this is a debate on who is singing what part. Besides that if you've listened to these 2 guys long enough, as I have, you can automatically tell who is who.
Layne just didn't sing. As my grandmother 👵 would say, "He could sang!!!" God, how I miss him. His voice was that of an angel 😇. I requested this song on the day he died. I remember it so clearly. Now I am sad. I really miss him. Been a fan since they first came out. I remember seeing them in the movie, "Singles."
As a trained vocalist I can hit most of his notes and inflections while singing Alice In Chains songs, however (and I can't stress this enough) it takes so. much. fucking. POWER and volume to belt out what he seems to sing so effortlessly. It's hard to overstate just how insanely good he was at what he did, you can feel the resonance in his voice from his more intense performances like Would to subdued tracks like Nutshell. Absolute legend in the pantheon of all time music greats, and Jerry Cantrell should be in said pantheon alongside him. Layne was a force🙏
@@tylerspeer963 nope, I don't have any recordings of myself singing. I wish to remedy that someday though I still love doing it but my circumstances have not aligned with making music over the years

Love sll the songs, but the fact his isolated voice is full of such harmony and greatness and can be listened to alone is testament to his passion , skill and talent. So glad i found there music. Makes life that little more enjoyable while here.
There are people who are excellent vocalists. BUT, the voice is something you're born with. To be a great singer AND have a unique voice is _very rare._
Well before the chorus (Into the flood again..) & after the opening harmonized word (Would..) you're actually hearing lead guitarist/songwriter/backing vocalist Jerry Cantrell (at 0:24) who fronts the band today & still writes most of the music. Nevertheless, Layne's vocals in this song still show incredible, important to their sound & distinct-sounding he was. I'm glad they've moved on strong even if it's not quite the same & that they are keeping his memory alive, though it's true that legends never die & although DuVall is outstanding/big-ranged as well, he's no Layne but no one else is either. Of course Jerry's pretty much the lead vocalist now while DuVall trades off & harmonizes a little while playing rhythm guitar. At least they somehow still sound like the same band, especially with Jerry's presence! -Proud of them for today's stuff too. They're still awesome, even though Layne's talent is remarkable/irreplaceable; can never be heard the same w/o him.
Pure perfect genuine genius.....what a voice! So missed n cant imagine the accomplishments he would of achieved on top of all he had done if he lived......Layne!!!!!!!!!!! RIP BROTHER!!!!

Little known fact.....Layne was a huge Prince fan & even called him the greatest musical mind of his lifetime. Can u imagine Prince shredding guitar and Layne's vocals together? LSMS
..."try to see it once my waaayeeeeeee" 👌🏻that voice never gets old or tired...it's still a gut punch 👊🏻
1:38 holy crap layne is insane this line right here has goven me even more respect then i already have
This sends chills all across my body!
It sure does. Another amazing talent gone too soon.
actually, you're an idiot for saying that. being a drug addict has nothing to do with being what you consider an idiot.
Yes mine too-most of their songs do but this is on another level & hauntingly beautiful.
+sometimelater don't bite the bait.
Tobakilacion Well, then you're just an ignorant person.
I know I have said this before. Staley's voice can raise the dead.
I wish it could raise him...
Sunshine I believe and I am living proof of dead and still alive. Oh what financial backing could do for me and you.
cyn
you and both ... a thousand times over - **as I sit here shakin' my head sayin' why oh why oh why Layne, why?"** .. .. .. headed on over to Them Bones video.
Julie Jones Fuckin' A...
Sure makes me feel alive. Makes me want to sing...
I bet his voice was LOUD as hell.
deepcreep98 I remember seeing them open for ozzy in 92...layne brought down the house
Trust me...it was!! I saw them in concert, layne was and is in a vocal league all his own.You could physically FEEL his vocals emanating from his chest. I was less than 30 feet from stage, you could hear his voice over the microphone
Layne and Chris Cornell.....best rock vocalists ever. RIP
Someone in an interview said his voice was so powerful he could hear his acoustic voice apart from what was cpming through the speakers at a concert. Yeah that's loud
Bryon Pachunka and Robert plant in his prime
Anyone else hearing thst bass line in their heads the whole time ? 😎
Bass and drum
always
Damn right
Rip mike starr!!
😂😂
I'm just stunned and amazed by him, even after so many repetitions.
who's disagreeing? why are you putting that out there narc
Why do you think one disagrees with you? I feel they only resent . Please be well.
no bullshit, this gave me goosebumps. totally a different feel without the music
Jak Sinvaygus eerily beautiful vocals
No joke there bro!
Becuse grunge was the last type of music that conved emotion modern rap tries to make sad music but it fails to kurt and laynes and chris singing which made me cried
7 Star 150 exactly
.
Layne & Jerry - 2 voices and 2 musical talents have rarely ever fit together so perfectly. This song is a masterpiece that will never age. If this came out on the radio today it would still blow everyone out of the water.
iFarted
Yup simple as that
Always said that 💖
i like them both equally
Rock band.
@@mhanning3185 wrong it's grunge
Layne's voice is mystical....magical!!
AIC was just here in South Bend a few
Weeks ago, and while they put on a
decent show, it was a far cry from how
they sounded while Layne was alive!!
Your dad should have kicked you out of the van, but that's just my opinion.
StartabandRoxy shove your opinion up your ass little bitch
Never forget Mr. Andy Wood in your rant-
His voice is truley one of a kind.
Its a shame that he couldnt get better.
If only Layne and Kurt were alive.
I agree, they were both some of the most unique performers we have ever been witnessed too.
Mezmerizing
Can you imagine how amazing it would've sounded if Cobain and stayley collaborated
And Chris Cornell
Unfortunately he got worse over time (if you could call it worse, he was still fucking fantastic) starting with the demos all the way through all the albums all the way to his last song with AiC. He was a better singer in Facelift than in Dirt because he could hit some notes better, and he sounded a lot better in Dirt than in the self titled.
Idc what anyone says, Layne is the greatest vocalist of all time. Alive or dead! 😭😭❤
I love alice in chains. My dad loved them but he died when I was 3. RIP Thomas V Noel 6/10/1981-5/11/2007
Colin Noel I am sorry for your loss - he was so young. Take care of yourself.
MsDoctorinthetardis thank you and god bless you
❤️❤️❤️
I love you, sorry for your loss.He had a great taste in music for sure ❤
What a legend! Rip
Same time period, but AIC wasn't "Grunge" music.
Oh please.
kborn000
Yes!
Either way, who cares what their genre was?
like chris cornell said, aic sounded like ratt until the seattle scene started evolving. but you can't deny layne's talent.
The whole thing is amazing. But starting at 2:35. it's god tier level. I remember reading a comment about an Alice in Chains video that said if dead men could sing they'd sound like Layne Staley.
I always felt 2:35 and on was the very climax of the song
One of the greatest voices ever. Forever will be missed.
Who is listening in 2021 and wishing we had him with us thru this fucked up time?
Holy shit! When layne comes in his voice sounds like something i can’t truly explain but so glad his talent was found and shared with the world. Rip layne
Haunting.......unmistakable as it is incredible. So sadly missed Layne.....
If I could choose one person to share a voice with it would be Layne even if I am a woman
Svinja Good choice.
Svinja WAYMENT. Wym "if"?
Ok piggy :)
Is svinja your name? because in my language that means pig :D
Your comment is dogshit like your soul. Go to hell
Excellent 🔥 layne staley forever ❤️
I miss Layne Staley and his voice brings tear to my eyes. He had a lot to say.
Thanks for the video. Good tribute to Andy Wood. Layne Amazing Voice. Rip. Never Forgotten.
Dude, you gotta put in the info part that Cantrell is singing the verses.
Yeah!.he really needs to put that in there and maybe which parts !! Because its not like none of us can tell... or tell the difference between the two! Lol
Believe it or not, some people can't tell... All the credit can't go to Layne.
Why? We all know what's what.
I think it wasn’t mentioned because most seem to understand that Layne is only singing the choruses here.
@@DavisBrendon29 Ya, but on the full recording Layne is singing the higher harmony to the lines that Jerry is singing in this video but we don’t hear them here!
My God!!!! -this is the most amazing thing I've ever heard, beyond the studio, beyond the radio or cd's, ect. This is spiritual!!!!! -thank you so much for posting. god bless you!!!
Hahah I said the same thing. More of an experience lol
I never get tired of hearing Layne's beautiful, amazing voice ❤
God this sounds just so raw! You can hear all the imperfections in his delivery but it still sound so God damn perfect! Layne, we all miss you!
Layne's voice was annoited with that special something legendary.
@@sixphilly1841 You mean my lips and they're enough.
Love How Layne does Vibrato
So hauntingly beautiful. ..
***** Lol.. Dimebag
***** I meant your profile picture hon? Looks like Dimebag Darrell
***** Are you kidding, I love Dimebag. Got the chance to meet him.
***** He was absolutely amazing. Very nice Texan man. Polite and funny. Phil on the other hand was loud and rude. I think he was using at that time and really didn't give a shit about the fan's. He wanted his dope. He interrupted my conversation with Darrell and Darrell being the sweetheart he was, apologized for Phil, gave me a hug and left.
***** Worcester Massachusetts USA. June, first 1996 The Centrum.
I can listen to this over and over again unbelievable
Absolutely stunningly beautifully sung. What a gift we had for such a short period of time.
Top 5 rock vocalists of all time
Layne Staley
Chris Cornell
Freddy Mercury
Robert Plant
Maynard James Keenan
Good list, but Eddie Vedder ought to be at #1.
You forgot Mike Patton
Phil Anselmo
who is chris Cornell and the last one?
And Jeff Buckley
Damn great voice grew up listening to this band and others. 90's rocked.
Best voice of all time. Damn.
My god... Love him and his voice so much...
I've seen this band more than any other band (6 times, 5 with Layne, 3 with Mike Starr)... the thing that keeps bringing me back is how soulfull this band feels....and the harmonies they create in their songs. Its something that is hugely underappreciated and sorely missed in alot of music today.
Laine fuiste parte de la última generación de Rockers, y los recuerdos que tenemos de tu talento vocal es grandioso, gracias por haber existido.
Goosebumps...can't fathom its been almost 20 years
I have goose bumps. That voice...
My favorite vocalist of the 90’s!! Freaking incredible.
one of my favorite bands of all time. Layne Staley was pure talent. RIP LAYNE.
I love the throat clearing “ahemmmm” during the big, dramatic entrance into the last chorus hahahah
Stuff like that makes isolated tracks so much fun
Layne sings most of this song. Here, I'll break it down for ya - (Jerry) Know me broken by my master. Teach thee on child (Layne joins Jerry) of love hereafter. Then Layne sings the chorus. (Jerry) Drifting body it's sole desertion. Flying not yet (Layne joins Jerry) quite the notion. Layne sings the rest of the song. I can't believe this is a debate on who is singing what part. Besides that if you've listened to these 2 guys long enough, as I have, you can automatically tell who is who.
THANK YOU
Jerry sings the verses and Layne sings the chorus and outro.
Exactly. Not like they have the same voice
Yessss thank you!
Such an incredible incredible voice.
If I'm not mistaken, the two verses are actually Jerry Cantrel's voice, while Staley provided the harmonies and the chorus for this particular song
I still cry every time I listen to this! Ughhhh RIP to the greatest 🙌♥️
This song will never get old. Rest in peace Layne.
One of the top 5 vocalists of all time IMHO
I believe at this point it’s fact.
Also Go Pack Go!
As a trained vocalist I can hit most of his notes and inflections while singing Alice In Chains songs, however (and I can't stress this enough) it takes
so.
much.
fucking.
POWER
and volume to belt out what he seems to sing so effortlessly.
As an untrained vocalist, no one cares. I seriously doubt you can hit most of his notes and inflections. Check your ego.
You got a SoundCloud of you singing ?
@@tylerspeer963 nope, I don't have any recordings of myself singing. I wish to remedy that someday though I still love doing it but my circumstances have not aligned with making music over the years
Such a unique and beautiful voice box that will be missed! Man, sure would of of love to hear more of his songs.
Im so damm glad this exsist !! Damm kt lane wish you were still with us...
Killer! His voice carried a haunting quality the likes I’ve never heard before or since. 🙏🏻🤘❤️
Holy sh*t! That was freaking awesome. I'm speechless............ RIP Layne
You really get the power and emotion coming through in Layne's voice, definitely my favourite grunge voclaist
Passed the same year as my mum.. just a few months before
Sad, very sad, not that many years apart in age as well.
Also, his voice is truly incredible.
To be a great singer AND have a unique voice is _very rare._
hauntingly beautiful
Who do I beg for a vocal only track of "Nutshell" , "Sea of Sorrow" , "Hey" & "Bleed The Freak" ?
Hey?
@@TheAndreluizcarneiro very obscure I guess
Love, hate, love would be nice too
Great music and voice.....
Rest easy Layne & Mike
Glad I got to see him live!! Best KA rocker!!! Love AIC!!!!!
lucky you man
Que voz incrivel!!!!!
Intensidade, força, sentimento, suave, envolvente, visceral . Apaixonante🎉.
Cantrell is a great backup singer him and Layne's voice mix perfectly together Cantrell has a great singing voice period
2:10 *clears throat for the epic fade in
Just sad awesome and beautiful....
Pure perfect genuine genius.....what a voice! So missed n cant imagine the accomplishments he would of achieved on top of all he had done if he lived......Layne!!!!!!!!!!! RIP BROTHER!!!!
Staley and Cobain forever.
I'm the doggggggggggg who get's beat.
Staley forever.. Kurt wasn't talented enough to tie laynes shoes...
pt88gt One man's opinion.
pt88gt They 2 singer had different styles it's not a fucking football game of who wins or loses it's a game about who's music can move people and both Kurt and Layne did that!
tommy fuller
No shit bro. I agree 100%
This will always give me chills, i want this exact version played at my funeral
Fuck dude, I have a note written in crayon in my wallet that says exactly that
Omg!!!! I love it!!!💓💓💓. I'm telling you I love this man's voice to the max!!!🌟🌟🌟❤️🌹I ❤️you Layne!!!🌹❤️🌈🌻☀️🎵🎶🎵
