You say that magnolias were pollinated by scurrying beetles. Magnolias evolved around 96 million years ago. Flying insects including beetle evolved 325 million years ago. So while they were not pollinated by bees as bees did not exist then is it not more accurate to say either flying beetles and other pollinating insects? After all the bloom's sweet fragrances are carried on the wind which isn't so helpful for scurrying beetles which at least today are generally attracted to more pungent odours?
