- Eddie Murphy reveals why he intentionally dropped his iconic laugh and has a hilarious story about a fan who once asked him about it

Hearing him say “I don’t laugh like that anymore” is heartbreaking. There are few things more beautiful in life than an infectious laugh.
Yeah I thought so too. I wonder what his laugh is like now..
You nailed it by saying this
It probably became annoying to him. Ppl always mimic your laugh etc and you just want them to focus on your talent and take you seriously.
Nah i feel him, I had a weird natural laugh and I changed it cuz I got looks alot.
My pal says he loves my laugh coz it's a hearty, up from the belly, genuine laugh. Although I think he was buttering me up coz he asked for a tap after it, hmpf
A comedian with a laugh that generates laughs is a SUPER POWER!
A chic magnet guaranteed no wing man needed 😂
Yeah. Unfortunately people made him feel otherwise.
Nailed it
But he implied it bothered him because it was distracting from the work maybe.
He wanted us to laugh at his performance not just because of his laugh.
Like if you laugh because you like someone rather than their joke.
Stavros Halkias (@StavvyBaby)
I never thought his laugh was odd. It just seemed so joyful and genuine.
That's because it was. Watched Bevery Hills Cop 1 a few months ago and I couldn't help but smile and laugh the whole way through because of it.
YUP, I laugh at his laugh not because it's funny but because it's so joyful that you can't help but also feel joy.
@@thenonexistinghero Same. It's been on netflix for a bit and I love listening to that laugh of his. It's a shame if he felt he had to change it.
I love this man's laugh... No matter how you laugh sounds, it's yours, and no one should try to ruin that for you.
Exactly!
He was already famous. The laugh was just the signature.
It was the laugh
I agree 💯 the laugh was just the signature
Yeah he already famous …. Why I just say “thisss mf Eddie man”
It sounds he is saying he wanted to work for his comedy, not just laugh.
Ewe cliché clones are programmed backwards 👁️
It's a shame he felt self conscious about his laugh. It was genuine and unique.
*self conscious my friend

I miss the laugh and trust me he’s much more than the laugh and he’s not funny bc of the laugh he’s funny bc he’s a good story teller a good joke teller his timing is good he can do impressions I mean the man played 5 characters in one scene and he wasn’t even nominated an Oscar for it or even won one for it or even won a golden globe so he’s a legend he’s one of my childhood heroes

"I didn't know how to answer that - I think I'm still standing there." is such a great line 😂
That laugh was gold and contagious 😂🤎🤎🤎
Ya. Others around him genuinely find his laugh funny and hilarious. Eddie should work to overcome his insecurity especially since his main schtick is being a comedian
@@lordjaashin that's exactly it, his main shtick is comedian. it's not good for someone with solid acting chops and great storytelling as a standup to be suddenly pigeonholed by any hack comedian trying to do "an eddie murphy bit" in their spot by mimicking the chuckle in order to get a laugh from a basic comedy club crowd. it's like having your entire act being reduced to a catchphrase
@@ObjectorSnark dude, he makes fun of other people by doing their mimicry too. If he can't take it then he shouldn't dish it out for others
Eew, why are the hearts brown?
@slizzardshroomer9666 cause your not Like "us" that's why you dont like brown hearts
"i feel like i'm still standing there." oh man, what a relatable observation and feeling lol
I'm going to have to save that one
That hurt to hear. He was so hurt by that man's comment. You never know when a stray comment might have such an effect on another person.
@@zoyadulzura7490 So true! But if it helps, what i try to do is look for the blessing, benefit and/or advantage to what was said. The worse it is for me, that more important it becomes to find the terrific in the terrible. Simply because this balancing acts as a way for me to emotionally detach from the comment, bringing me back to the present so I'm not still stranded in the past (like Eddie mentioned 🤣)
OMG I loved that laugh! The fact that I didn’t even realise he dropped it proves no one was focusing on his laugh, we just laughed with him because he’s good at what he does. Eddie, please keep laughing and keep spreading your joy!
"Was that computers?" Ayyy lmao
Yes, the computers are laughing at us.
But can you blame them?
I'm surprised that question didn't make Eddie laugh!

@@MarcillaSmithwith the state of the world today and how sensitive we are as species no it’s not a surprise at all
only Eddie could say such a simple thing & make it so hilarious
That laugh was everything😢
This comment is basically the exact reason he changed his laugh. When you said it's everything that's an insult. He was literally more than his laugh and that laugh wasn't what made him funny.
@bradydavis5791 I don't think they meant it was everything as in the only thing. I think they mean it was an amazing part of him. I for one, have always found him funny and talented with or without the laugh, but I do miss the laugh too. It was iconic and so is Eddie himself.
Im also heartbroken hearing that thats the reason he got rid of it...here and there id make an impression of his laugh at work and ask my out of date coworkers if they recognise it
While I agree "that laugh was wverything" & the post right below saying that's the reason why Eddie changed it.
I feel that laugh was a signature:
Beverley Hills Cop 1-3,
Trading Places,
48hrs 1 & 2,
SNL original cuts : Mr Rogers World,
Bring it back Eddie! It's part of who you are and what we love about you!
@@deepin2uhe lost it, changed it 35 yrs ago
No one was laughing at him, they were laughing with him. That laugh genuinely made me smile.
That bit in Beverley Hills Cop where he's chuckling to himself, and Lisa Eilbacher's character briefly copies his laugh only to make him laugh harder, that was such a real moment that sums up EXACTLY what you just said.
I'm sure they laughed at him for it too.... people r shitty
@BG-nl3hy If I was making millions, I wouldn't give a shit what people are laughing at.
@@eddieprieto6511 talk is cheap
@@BG-nl3hy Exactly, so why care what other people say about you?
He was blessed with a contagious laugh. It’s a shame he considered it a bad thing afterwards.
I can relate, though. I used to laugh just like my older brother, who had a loud, obnoxious laugh that evidently rubbed off on me. I thought the laugh would always be mine, but then we no longer spent much time with one another. My laugh changed, and I miss how I used to make others laugh in such a genuinely happy way by my old laugh - which is lost.
Real comics don't want the easy/hack laughs...they want people to laugh at their jokes
I had a childhood friend who laughed exactly like Eddie Murphy. It was super weird.
@@MyAmazingUsername ok
@@twistoffate4791 I used to talk to this girl when I was about 20. She was 18. She had a really cute laugh, so I stole it. I know you're probably thinking that was weird of me to steal a girl laugh in the first place, but I thought it was gender neutral... I don't know... maybe I got too self-conscious, too.

Just the body language & the way Eddie says "Was that computers?" completely cracks me up LMFAO
That’s why they say a comedian isn’t just somebody who says funny things, it’s someone who says things funny. The greats like Eddie have an inherent sense of humor that comes through no matter what.
He’s still got it😂
That's what I was laughing at. I flashed to my younger data wedged we were listening to Eddie Murphy all the time. 😂😂😂😂

His laugh was awesome. I had a neighbor whom one year I gave him a hot wheels of his classic car. This man loved it and started laughing like Eddie Murphy. I never heard my neighbor laugh before. Made the gift giving so much better.

That laugh is sooooooo ICONIC he should never get rid of it. He is special and that laugh is apart of it.
Eddie Murphy using the phrase "Sotto voce" is golden all by itself!
I'm so sad he felt so self conscious about his laugh. I loved his laugh. It was so beautiful. It made me happy to see and hear him laugh it was so genuine and wholesome.
He was not self-conscious what he was , was not a puppet or a character for people to stop and and tell him in public to please do a laugh that is just naturally his laugh .. Had to become self-aware when he would laugh so he would eventually stop doing it that way. Because somehow the viewers can't separate these entertainers or actors from their jobs and their real lives what they are is exhausted of people who can't let them be outside of work their job bc its just what they do. Like everyone else , they work are employees.
@@Taygirl4Life That's him being self conscious. It sucks but part of being famous is that you are going to get those comments, right or wrong. My point so stands. His laugh was great, glad he felt self conscious enough to change it.

I think he just wanted to be known for his ACTING performance not just one aspect of who he "always/already was". I reckon its about Eddie taking pride in his work.
Just like how most comedians wait for laughter to die down before starting another bit--they want to know what they did to get a laugh (no freebies). Big respect!
Yes, but still, his laugh was part of his acting. Why change something about yourself that people like? That's not the only reason people like him.
Im so glad he talked about that because i was like why he dont laugh like he needs an inhaler anymore 😂
As much as he makes people laugh it just proves laughter is contagious. Laughter makes the world go around.

You can tell now when eddie laughs hes definitely holding back and he's been holding his laugh back for years in public. I know when hes in private he laughs his regular way and I bet its like taking a deep breath!😂😂😂
Damn after watching this and reading your comment, I actually realised that he does hold back his real laugh! That’s mad!
Imagine he goes home, makes sure no one’s home and does the classic laugh to get it out of his system.
i hope he does get to laugh for real at home
i wish he didn't feel like he had to change it - but i get why he did
i just hope he's able to actually Enjoy things he thinks are funny, without having to "Perform" it, just bcz ppl are around 😑
your laugh? Is true self expression of yourself. From experience laughing feels 10x better than crying. Yes men do cry, if u got good heart. I do whimper wen I think bout my sons an grandkids, niece, nephews, good friends an their kids. I treat all younger as my children. I made mistakes so I try guide them away from they doing same...

Its crazy how many AMAZING interview moments he has given.
It was such an iconic laugh. It had a tongue in cheek flair to it.
I could listen to him just tell stories all day...😄
I love that laugh, bring it back!!!
My 11 year old son laughed and laughs like this since he was able to laugh. It’s adorable. Don’t change it for anyone, ESPECIALLY Hollywood.
I like the point he’s making about it being a strange thing having to change something as natural as laughing. He’s absolutely right. It’s a pretty interesting thing to think about. People don’t pick their laugh, the way they laugh is just the way it naturally comes out sounding. To change the way that something in your body naturally functions is something that would take a lot of will power, focus, and repetition. I’d like to hear him talk about how he went about changing it.
just remembering the feeling of how other people mock you for something is often enough negative reinforcement to make you catch yourself every time once you're aware of it
He didn't _have_ to change it, though. That's a fallacy.
Should keep it
You’re 60 years too late
Yes, it's definitely a huge part of the Axel Foley character that he should have kept. He laughed so much in the first movies that it seems weird that he doesn't laugh at all in the latest movie.
Im really happy hes still around, grew up watching his films. He looks good!
We all have a similar story about something that we felt compelled to change. 😢 I’m still drying to get back what I suppressed. Thanks for sharing😊
1, that laugh is ICONIC
2, I was told in elementary school that I had a speech problem because I would round my vowels. I had an English/Scottish/Irish kind of "twang" when I spoke, and I insisted on speaking properly. I was made fun of by all the other kids, so I actively started trying to hide my accent, which in turn caused me to begin stuttering. To this day, I sometimes still stutter... The accent only comes forward when my guard is completely down, like when I'm angry about something. Now that I'm grown and I realize how special it was, I regret trying to fit in when I was younger. I was always an outcast anyway, no matter what... And I alone chose to hide/kill that part of me that was unique. It still upsets me.
Never let anyone try to convince you to change.
When laughter is contagious. He was patient number one.😊❤
I was literally waiting for it in the film and it didn’t come 😢
Yeah he hasn't laughed like that in over 30 years
I was waiting for it.. I like movie but I was disappointed when I didn't hear the laugh..
Yeah, I was sad about that too. 😢 Like that is his signature on almost all of his movies. Especially on Coming to America, Beverly Hills Cop 1&2, Delirious, Pluto Nash, and I-Spy my top movies by him.
If you need a certain laugh to improve a movie….then, you really have the maturity level of a 5 year-old.🙄
That’s being generous.
He looks great. One of my favorite comedian actors
An old buddy of mine, his laugh sounds like a dolphin and he finds his own laugh funny. You can see the potential for a positive feedback loop.
We met in the military and he lived a few rooms down from me. One Friday night, I stood outside of his room and just told him jokes. Over and over again, he rested the urge to laugh, until I finally got him started. Within minutes, the entire floor was curious about the sound. A few moments after that, the on-call NCO, who had been napping in his office, came upstairs because my buddy's room happened to be directly above the guy's office.
"What on God's green earth is that noise?"
I point towards my buddy's room, "Oh, he's just laughing. He'll calm down in a few minutes."
"Jeez, I thought someone had dragged a dolphin into their room." This, inevitably, made him laugh harder. "Great, I just got him started again, didn't I? Was it you that made him do this in the first place?"
"Yes, sir."
"Don't do that again."
This man made millions of that laugh an he gonna sit here an tell us he stopped laughing like that. Cmooonnn maannnnn
