  • PTCA is a minimally invasive procedure used to open blocked coronary arteries and improve blood flow to the heart. The doctor will advise you to stop taking certain blood thinning medications and fast for 6 to 8 hours before the procedure. Depending on the condition, the surgeon makes an incision in one of the coronary arteries and inserts a catheter to inject contrast dye to detect the blockage via an X-ray. A balloon catheter is then used by the surgeon to treat a treatable blockage. After a few hours of monitoring, most patients can go home the same day.
