I retired a couple years ago. Just started getting back into plants. I just planted a peace lily in LECA. Then I planted a black velvet acacia in pin. I hope they do well. I love listening to you. You have the most calming voice. I have problem with stress. Listening to you calms me. I am learning so much from you. Some people aren’t very nice. You repeat talking about soil as much as you want!
Thank you so much I really do appreciate that! 🫶 I'm so sorry about feeling stressed 🥹 I'm happy to be here and to help and I enjoy putting out these videos even though some people can be mean lol but it's all the amazing and nice people that I focus on!
I use the grow 3.0 poles just like the previous models. Having the vines grow on the outside. I’m choosing the 3.0 for plants I plan to do multiple chop and props on and use the 2.0 for plants I’m just planning on growing and extending. My interpretation of the 3.0 is so you can open to remove existing vines roots when you’ve chopped the vine without having to undo the whole pole. Maybe I’m wrong??? I also fill them with moss first but start clicking the clasps together from the middle.
Roots kinda grow all up and down the pole so I honestly don't really get the point. I dunno maybe it's just me 🙈 If one vines grows over top then it won't open and you end up cutting roots anyway?!
Glad to see you moving some of your Alocasia to Pon. The ones I moved recently are doing well, except my Hilo Beauty. It got very mad at me. My Thai constellation is also very happy in Pon. I will gradually move all my philodendrons and monstera over too as I need to repot. An added bonus is no fungus gnats!
I have my alocasia all in self watering with soil! They are living their best life. I have my babies in that same exact pot too. I love them. I also use cal mag too, for years. It’s great too!
Omg that silver stripe is gorgeous on pole. I had a Rio on pole but I sold it because my hanging basket was lush. I'm gonna start a pole again. I'm inspired
Hi🩷 I would recommend you do rinse out your pon because it is really dusty and it can clog up. You can also just flush it after you’ve potted the plant up for the first couple of waterings. That will also help the roots get used to a semi-hydro set up 😊
@@jacquelinedaniels87 I personally prefer to rinse it because otherwise, it becomes muddy at the bottom (in my experience). You also want to flush once in a while to avoid mineral buildup.
Thank you! I initially rinsed it with the first alocasia I potted into it because it looked dusty but someone commented I shouldn't rinse it and couldn't really find an answer for sure. I'll probably end up rinsing it through over the next couple waterings! I appreciate it! 🥰
right stringy moss 😂what is that about ! i've had that alot with my amazon orders lol annoying. Also im so happy you mentioned nutrients bc thats been whats holding me back from trying pon/leca i only use rain water and i add jacks houseplant food. cant wait for an update 💚
Thanks for all the plant tips, I’ve been enjoying growing my alocasia corms thanks to your advice. I use PON a lot and would suggest rinsing it, but if using straight away use warm water. I would think that maybe people popping plants into cold PON straight from rinsing could cause roots to shock.
Great video. I heard that square self watering pots were not good co pared to round. Doesn’t make sense to me but interested to see how that dragon scale does in that pot
Hey glad you're giving pon a go 😊 I do rinse it but purely for aesthetic reasons 😅 Please can you update when you next repot your pon plants to see what you think of the root growth xx
Please keep us updated on how the corms you propped in Fluval transition to PON. I have a bunch propping in Fluval that I’d like to transition to PON myself but other channels have said it doesn’t work well and to use perlite…
Interesting! I didn't think about the stratum not transferring well. I love experimenting though to see what happens. It's only been a few days and so far so good but I'll definitely keep everyone updated!
I've kept my Alocasia happy in a mix of moss, perlite and orchid bark. Interested to know if I could add Osmacote to it? 🤔 Got me thinking since you're planning to add it to pon.
When Wildfern uses these types of poles, she just adds from the top and uses a chopstick to pack the moss in. Might be an easier “hack” to get the moss in.
I prefer to build my poles with the moss first then close shut but these new 3.0 poles are a lot more flat so it's hard to add the correct amount of moss.
@@plantsbymelissa I completely understand. I prefer to do the same. Just thought it might help you get the moss in easier. The front closing poles look like a pain to me 🤣
They're called greening pins. I use them for my wire moss poles but they don't attach that well to the clear ones. I've been using orchid clips lately but this pin was already in the moss at the bottom so I just used it. I get mine off amazon, here's what I use: www.amazon.com/dp/B075Z7S9H5?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzmeli0992-20&creativeASIN=B075Z7S9H5&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.27D4Z5CKST4WL&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ons_d_asin
I can't see the fungus you are referring to on your silver dragon. I have a silver dragon which has 3 blooms and 2 new leaves. I would hate for it to get a fungus!?
The flooring looks great. So convenient for your plant room. Are you putting all of your alocasia in pon? Anthurium too? Just curious since they seemed to do so well in your regular soil mix.
No, not all of them. Just some sad ones that I had to cut back from a fungal infection and some smaller corms I grew out. So far I only moved two over but going to go slow because I'm not sure if I will even like it!
lol you got this! I don't really feel like they're hard plants to care for. Even if the leaves die back it will regrow as long as the root system is intact 😊
Are the 2.0 thiccly poles discontinued? I just had to order 3.0s. Also, what did you use to anchor the vine? I imagine the orchid clips don’t work as well on the 3.0 poles? Thank you for all you do! I’ve learned so much from you! ❤
They're in stock on amazon! They might have been out recently but I just checked this morning and I saw them on there. I used a greening pin but it doesn't work that well with the plastic ones. The 3.0 is supposed to clasp around the vine as it grows so you won't need a clip with them. www.amazon.com/dp/B0BQR6GVB3?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzmeli0992-20&creativeASIN=B0BQR6GVB3&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.27D4Z5CKST4WL&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d_asin&th=1
Your flooring is beautiful ! Melissa do you watch Sydney the Plant Guy? He was the first I saw that grew on moss poles. I don’t watch him to much anymore, but he’s experimenting on not using a pot!! He’s hanging them up outside. Since most of the roots on in the moss pole. But like I said I haven’t watched to much since so don’t know how it’s working for him. As usual your plants look great!😊
No, I do not. I get accused of copying him all the time and honestly it's ridiculous. I started my first moss pole in Jan 2021 and my inspo was paz_plantlife on insta. Craig milran is the first person I have seen do moss poles but all the copying claims need to stop. So many people grow plants climbing and they're not copying anyone.
@@plantsbymelissa no Melissa I didn’t mean it that at all, I just wonder if you ever watched him cuz now he’s not using pots at all. Thank you! No, I quit the BTI a couple weeks ago. I'm honestly not sure if BTI is harmful to nematodes but wanted to be safe anyway. So far, the gnats have really reduced. I'm going to order more soon and definitely make a video on them since I accidentally deleted the footage. I wished I got more sooner because I definitely didn't get enough the first time last summer. I've been really into beneficials lately to help with prevention!

Yes, they're on amazon! Maybe out of stock but I just check and they're available now :) I like these for ease of putting them together and you need stability when you extend them.
