    I bought this plane new it had blue colour on the body and the frog was red, in a corrugated white cardboard box with blue printing on it. A cousin of mine, now a retired Lt. Colonel, stole it from my workbench locker never found it again. It was in 1969 or 70 when I bought it for Rs 90/= only. A very handy tool for hobbyists. I still feel so bad about it, that was my first Stanley.

    I love reading the comments in a video like this. You got a rusty old plane from the cheaper end of the market into a better than new condition, it possibly looks better and almost certainly runs better. You did it all by throwing elbow grease at the job in hand instead of money and your methods worked. I admit to being a newbie to woodworking and I have only restored 3 planes thus far, and I have no idea what are technically the "right ways" of doing things, but if a plane planes and looks good when it’s finished that’s a success to me. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, or so they say. Yet people feel compelled to criticise in such a petty way, "Black is not a joyful colour"??? What the heck it that about?
    You did what you set out to do, restore the plane to how it looked new and to get it successfully working. I'd say the video was a roaring success. Thank you.

    Next time soak the rusty parts in Metal Rescue to get rid of the rust. It eliminates most the sanding and gets in all of the corners. It also doesn’t damage the paint.

    Great video. Just picked up my first plane, I believe it is the one you restored, but mine has a blue body. Love the final product, it looked and performed amazing. I hope mine turns out that well. Is the caliper paint more resilient/harder than spray paint?
    Just finished cleaning up a Makita 2030 I found. A machinist told me to use the Meguiars mirror glaze when sanding off the rust as it helps prevent the wet/dry paper from clogging. Let's just say it was a vast improvement over WD40 I was using.
    As this is my first plane, any tune up tips?

      Tom Buskey i haven’t spent more than $20 for anything a 5 or smaller. I did spend $50 on a 6 in great condition and $35 on a Miller falls jointer (#7 size) that I love.

    • @TomBuskey
      @TomBuskey 5 років тому

      @@BradsWorkbench I hear about these cheaper used planes all the time. I don't go to flea markets, yard sales or the like due to time. So I'm happy to spend a bit buying it from someone else who did do that and sells it to me on eBay or some of the used tool places. It's still cheaper than a fully restored one and I get to do the restoration myself. At the end of the day, I want something I can use, not put on the shelf. $35 for a #7 is a great deal! I have a transitional MF #7 that I use.

    • @BradsWorkbench

      Tom Buskey Tom Buskey definitely understandable. I enjoy the hunt and you’re right, garage and estate sales is where you can find them cheap. Shoot me an email and let me know what you’re looking for. Most I restore just back to workers. But really once you have a smoother, jointer, block, and a scrub, the rest are just collectibles lol. I use the same 3 for 99% of my work but I love having the other ones as well.

    Really fine job man. The handyman planes are kind of "infamous" for being hard to dial in and not as good as the "real" Stanley Baleys. IDK, I have 4 or 5 of them and they seem to work fin for my needs once tuned. I just redid a no. 5 (H1205) this weekend. Not to the same extent as yours. But one suggestion about the interface between the frog and the body: take the two apart and razor the paint off both. Then get a little valve grinding compound in between them and work the frog back and forth against the body being careful not to "rock" it This should flatten and polish the 4 points of contact (2 on the frog, 2 on the body). It doesn't have to be perfectly machined, but it makes a big difference in setting the plane up for smoothing and keeping it tuned over time. Also while the frog is off, you may want to consider removing the paint from the raised points of contact on the face of the frog (where the blade rides). Not a lot, but just enough for there to be metal on metal contact. The blade depth adjuster will function much more smoothly that way, with just a dab of 3-in-1 inbetween the frog and blade. Keep up the good work! Most guys would have taken one look at that sole and been "I'm out". Nicely done.

      Thank you for your insight! Had I have realized how much work it would take to flatten the sole I never would have started!

    this plane seems poorly designed, you might want to use some loctite on the threads of that bolt that holds the blade down but that isn't meant to be tight to it (since it has that clamp lever part) that or use a bushing or shoulder bolt, or make one if you're into that or want to get into it, getting a lathe would be a good thing, if you're careful, there is a lot of fun projects you can do on one, just be really careful and check everything before turning it on

  • @stevebowen809

    If your restore a plane DONT do it this way, never paint the handles, flatten with the frog installed and no paint on the frog bed it should be bare flat metal. However he did a nice job for looks only and its been saved for somebody to fettle.
