Restoration of a very rusty Record No4 Plane - ASMR
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 сер 2021
- In this video I’m restoring a very rusty Record No4 plane with broken handles (tote). The Record plane is very similar to a Stanley No4, some might say it is a total rip off. During the depression Record were encouraged by the British government to provide home made products through placing large import duties on American products.
I’m quite happy with the restoration, I think the handles came out particularly well and the change of colour ties the whole package together nicely. My only slight disappointment was the amount of pitting caused by the rust, which I was unable to get rid of.

This is resurrection, not restoration! You have made this poor little piece of trapped rust become a work of art.
You deserve praise, encouragement, and respect. You have brought this old marvel to another "plain".
Hats off to you Sir. My deepest respects.
(I just love that beautiful English Racing Green- so much warmer than the original cold Record blue- which I don't like either)
Good lord there are too many videos of plane restoration. But really, good lord I watch too many. And somehow- this one is still near the top. Makes me want to take my sort of restored planes to a new level. But why.... my woodworking needs more work than my planes need paint!
Thank you for this. Keep em coming.
I think ive watch just about all of the plane ones and bench vice restorations
Can never have too many.
Looks great! But here's two tips for better performance while planing. Don't sandblast the interior ground surfaces of the plane body, those have to mate well with the frog to eliminate chatter. Also don't use the buffer on the plane sole, it needs to be dead flat especially around the throat for best performance.
Thank you for posting this. You have raised the bar in my tool restorations.
I have to say... this was an amazing transformation. I am getting back into wood-working after a 40 year absence... and am looking at older/vintage hand tools rather than the new power tools since the vintage tools are what I was taught to use. I have an old Stanley No. 4 plane that a neighbor is giving me that is almost as rusty as this one you showed. Hoping I can do as good a job in restoring it as you have done with this Record. Great video and thanks for sharing.
C'est du bon travail bravo encore
Outstanding job. I love to see hand tools brought back to their former glory. 👍
Landrover Green?
Absolutely!
The colour, they should have been.
Bravo!
Cleaning out a deceased estate and have picked up a number of
old tools, including planes.
I have enough projects, but this has inspired me to have a go.
Thanks
I have always been a fan of the brushed metal look, but good color choice. I love watching these videos; they tend to be calming and mind clearing, thank you for posting!!
Glad you like them!
That's one of the best restoration I have seen The handle and knob are fantastic the colour is spot on and it looks and works fine. Thanks for sharing your time and skill and remember stay safe and make more great videos 🍺🍺👍👍🇬🇧
Thank you very much!
The shaving call to action got me. Done.
Beautiful result, excellent work. ❤ed it!
Seen lots of restorations, from some of the best woodworkers! This is by far the best yet. Well done
Wow, thanks!
A most impressive restoration! Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Thanks.
Brilliant restoration, I like the colour. Particularly impressive new handle and knob.
Excellent work, it looks like it came out of the factory.👍🏽
Loved your process! Another antique tool saved from the scrap yard!
Excellent in every way and your humor and dedication to your craft kept my interest and focus throughout.
I love it, finally i found someone that did a serious restoration
Very impressive. You have given me the inspiration to go and haul out my old collection.
You should! Let me know how you get on
BRAVO, BRAVO! This had me mesmerised from start to finish. I'm just about to restore my first, a Stanley No.4 plane. Was watching this for tips, if mine turns out a half as good as this one I'll be a proud man. Excellent work fella.
I'm an avid consumer of plane-restoration vids and have to say, this is one of the best! What a transformation.
You could have glued the rear handle successfully using epoxy but that doesn't matter when you can demonstrate making such a superb replacement - one of the best hand-made plane handles I've ever seen, so major kudos for that alone!
I knew as soon as your caption said it that you were referring to lapping the sole with the frog and irons not fitted and I know the supposed truth that this is necessary, but actually this has been debunked numerous times. Guys have lapped empty plane bodies then later fitted everything, squiggled the sole with a marker and run the plane over abrasive and the marker that was immediately removed shows there was no change in the geometry. That's not to say it can't _ever_ happen, but it seems it's not normally an issue to do as you did initially. I don't know if I can post a link to it but one of the best demos of this if on the YT channel *Plane Collector* who also has lots of other great content showing his restoration methods in detail.
Thanks for your kind words! 👍
Interesting you say that about the lapping of the plane, I found when I went back to flatten it again there wasn't much of a difference (if any at all).
@@TheGardenWorkshopRestoration do what you think
Memorizing video and amazing restoration, especially the new handles!
OMG this is an awesome restoration video, so thank you so much for sharing your craftsmanship and talent
Amazing job, perfect restoration. Colour choice was good and it's a classic colour anyway so you can't go wrong with that choice. Fabrication of the wooden handles were perfect so over all, it's a 10/10 in my opinion.
Thank you very much!

I really like the green you've gone with. Not only does the paint have depth, but green goes well with the brown wood stain, and with the brass parts. Plus the white lettering looks good on it.
A fine job and excellent recovery. A+!
I think when the purists refinish their own plane, they can chose how they want to finish it. Until then, they should just enjoy this masterful work. Well done!
Agreed
Darwin good job @@joshuaward000
Nice. Work. Excellent attention to detail!
I have restored a number 4 plane. This restoration is however on another level. Everything has been restored to perfection. It's better than new.
You are very kind, I'm glad you liked it!
That was more enjoyable than I had any right to expect. Well done...the plane, and the sound, too.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it 👍
Great job and you did a heck of a nice job on the handles. I also wanted to say, you don't take a 'back seat' to anyone. You are a master at restoration.
I loved that. You’re a craftsman!
Tip for drilling holes on an angle: take a piece of scrap wood, draw a line on it, clamp it to the side of the work piece so it lines up with the hole you want to drill, line the drill up with the reference line as you go.
I really enjoyed that. Great job on the restoration. Love the colours. Thanks for sharing 😊
Hermoso trabajo, muy profesional.Mis felicitaciones!!!
I love the finish in green, incredible job!!!!
Lovely job. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this. I've done a few planes but never to this standard. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it
Absolutely incredible, what a brilliant restoration 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
Exquisitely done! Thanks for sharing!
Loved the way you got rust of the brass . Another top five for tumeric and PVA with a touch of iron fillings. Well done
It's your plane. Paint it any color you choose. The purist can paint their's record blue.
Most of my Restos go Kawasaki Ninja green. The colour hits you in the face & everyone knows its a custom .. just for me.
Well done. I like how you turned a stuff up with your handle into a win by thinking outside the box.
Glad you enjoyed it
A work of Art. Outstanding.
Wow! Thanks for sharing. This is restoration done to the max! I plan to restore a similar plane but it will only be to return to fully functioning state. A bit of old patina left over will make it look just perfect.
Beautiful job! Btw it's nice to see the next project at the end 👍
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. Putting the next project at the end certainly focuses the mind because I haven't done the restoration yet! 🤞
Excellent restoration job, well done 👏
Looks like it came straight from the shop.Stunning restoration and great choice of colour
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! 😄👍
A restoration to aspire to. Beautiful end result.
Just Beautiful! Much respect... as I just did my first plane.. and known first hand that.. it takes alot of work.. and I one was a simple Stanley 110..lol.. video just cant capture the time it takes.. yours is fantastic! Masterfully done!!!
Думаю что с момента продажи, много, много лет назад, этот рубанок не был так хорош как сейчас 😁 Гениальная реставрация 👌 Браво 👏❤️!!!!!!!!!
That green also looks great with those beautiful new knobs you made. 👍🏼
Thank you! Cheers!
Not sure how I came here but it is great. It is the best plane restoration I have seen. It requires knowledge on the use of the tool to restore it correctly. It is a perfect, better than new restoration but with technical details in mind. Perfect.
Sole flattening - ✅
Frog flattening - ✅
Blade sharpening - ✅.
Assembled correctly - ✅
Final result: a usable tool that actually takes some fine shavings.
Wow, thanks!
Wow that's absolutely amazing you made an absolutely fantastic job of that it's better than new.
fantastic restoration. there is nothing wrong making your tools unique to you using whatever color you want.
Very true!
Beautiful work, dude. Keep it up. I love it.
Parabéns pelo seu trabalho de restauração,SHOW.
Gracias. Excelente trabajo!!! Felicitaciones.
I’ve restored several old Stanley planes and appreciate the quality of your work. I don’t mind color change, just not sure about green. 😊
Beautiful restoration performed. I like your style and color choice !
Thank you very much!
Masterpiece brother. Keep up the exceptional tutoring....
I am trying to restore some old planes for my son. Unfortunately,I will not be able to go to the extent that you have, but it was fascinating watching and I did learn a lot. Thank you for sharing and keep up the great work.
It's your tool, you decided on what color you desire!
Great video!!!
The drill press/lathe was a great idea!!!
That handle and knob came out absolutely and insanely great!
Thanks! I'm glad you like it 👍
Very nice result … Good Job Sir 👍🏽
Great work, great transformation…the day I bought a 4-1/2 in similar condition….!
Thanks for the video
I watch many restoration channels but only subscribe to the very best, and today I discovered you and I have subscribed. Excellent restoration
That is a very kind thing to say, thankyou! ✌
“Subscribe” at the end. That was so cool. I recently restored a yard sale find.... a Stanley No. 4. Not nearly that bad to start and not nearly as nice a plane. But it made a decent plane for me to add to my shop.
One of, if not the best I've seen and I watch a lot of them. Beautiful work and attention to detail is top drawer. I subbed you.
It's your plane. you paint it any color you like. At least you'll recognize it a mile away. And you have a drill press. It's a step ahead of me. lol Great job!
Great job on the handles. As for color...your tools, you choose! I would paint everything in my workshop in shades of purple if I could :)
That was a beautiful job, I like the green paint
What a great restoration. Top job and nice choice of colour. Paul from the uk 🇬🇧
AWESOME restoration. Just the right amount of shine on the metal (brushed look looks great) and the colors look fine, as well. I was especially impressed with the making of the two wood pieces. Drill press lathe: use what you got and make it work.
Right on 👍
That is now a thing of great beauty; well done!
Good choice of colour, it looks period correct and gives the plane a touch of class!
Thanks a lot!
Absolutely Fabulous, well done sir.
Very, very, nice job. Thank you.
One brilliant restoration you did a great job friend, loved the way you made those new handles, look's really good should last for years, Stay Safe & have a nice day !!!.
Glad you liked it
Very cool. It’s yours, paint it any way you like. I think it works well. It’s just like a Christmas present
What an outstanding result! And your plane your colour choice.
It came out really nice. Well done. The wood an color choices are great. Cheers
You are very kind, Thankyou! 😃
I dig the green. That thing looks great!
Wonderful job! Greetings from Argentina!
Gracias 😃👍
Amazing colour choice!! Perfeito job!
Thank you! Cheers!
What a good job of restoring that plane. Very good.
Thank you George! 😃
Beautifully done. I like the deep green color. I don't think I'd worry about the flatness of the bottom. None of these planes were flattened when they were made. If you watch the Plane Collector video dated 01/18/18 (Lapping a bench plane fully assembled v. bottom only ) that myth was busted. You work was stunning!
Thank you very much! That is what I found out for myself, once I started flattening it again, it was already flat!
The green looks so good i think Record would have chosen the green over the blue once they saw your work which i think would have competed favourably. The best restoration i have ever seen.I'm pretty sure you flattened the sole once reassembled. I think you can buy them for around $300-$400, it still wouldn't be enough for the work you put in and the awesome result.
First of your videos I've watched, but it won't be the last. Amazing bit of work, looks like you've done this sort of thing before! I especially enjoyed watching the making of the new handle (I literally thought to myself at the beginning, "How do they make those handles?") Also enjoyed your improvisions with your drill press. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.
brilliant restoration, 10 out of 10.
😁
Colour looks great! Better than original to me. Amazing work
wowzer! that is a beautiful restoration 👏👏👏👏
Glad you like it!
Wow! Frikkin beautiful restoration! 💯💯💯
Great filming and lighting. Loads of editing. 👍👍👍
Awesome restoration. Looks like it had been at the bottom of a lake!
WOW that’s so beautiful.
Well done and well worth doing, Stewart, south west Australia.
Just beautiful well recovery
Excellent work!!! I recently refurbished one of these.
and many thanks for no distracting music!!
