Great video. One quick story about Grant, when he was young and financially struggling. He had one asset a black slave. He was offered lots of money for that slave. This would of saved him financially. But Grant said no. He freed his slave and said I would never sell him because he is my friend..
I bought a copy of the Memoirs at a church book sale. What a page turner! I couldn't put it down. I wish I still had it. Maybe I do still have it somewhere. What a delightful description of a book that doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves. Thank you!
After the war, certain seized properties in the south were divided up with Grant giving some to those who had served with him. My family still has the original deed signed by Grant that was given to my great-grandfather.
I gave up on that book a quarter of the way in. If you're interested in warfare of that era, it's a must, but I'm not. Pages and pages of descriptions of troop movements and strategies, but little genuinely visceral writing.
General Grant and Mark Twain was the best historical team-up

Mark Twain, always being at the right place at the right time (like that comet he cared so much about)
Grant's _Personal Memoirs_ is a great read.

In Ron Chernow's biography about Grant shows that Grant all throughout his life never met a conman he didn't trust.
your videos are such an inspiration! i like Mark Twain, but didn't know of the Grant connection.

Thank you! I’m glad you like them 🙂
Wow! For Grant and Twain, and Wow! How circumstantial and wholly improbable! What a rale. I'm reelling.
That’s how I felt when I read about it, I never would have guessed those two even crossed paths, let alone in such a significant way.
Wow. Fantastic.
Fantastic video!
Thank you!
Yeah, but, who is buried in Grant's tomb?
No one, because no one is *buried* there!

First comment, also I would love you to be consistent, brilliant content 🤌❤️
Thank you! Yeah, it’s been proving difficult to be consistent in both shorts and longform at the same time, but I’m definitely working on it.
