What people like you don't understand about meta is this - you don't NEED meta classes unless you are pushing high keys, but playing meta classes makes ANY key level easier. It's like asking two people to do a job with a tool, and then giving them a choice of using a great tool, or a worse version of the same tool.

Not always playing for score is something I’ve been doing a lot more this season. Playing a new spec in all new dungeons meant I realized as I got to keys over 20 the gaps in my skills on disc priest started to become obvious. The class simply requires to you be very in tune with boss abilities and when they happen. Being a little late on the ramp in a 17 tyrannical might be fine but can easily mean a wipe on even a 22

  • @Thomasburks

I've found the biggest factor in M+ is the percieved meta and the people you play with. If you're playing with randoms (LFG) you HAVE to be a meta spec otherwise it will be incredibly difficult. Playing with friends/guildies completely removes this. For perspective, I am a 470 ret pala, 2k score week 3, who almost exclusively pugs keys. My end of season goal is for +20s across all dungeons. I still get declined for +10s regularly, let alone 15s or higher. There will always be someone more geared than you, and so unless you're the meta class, players refuse to take you. Additionally, things like lust further mean some classes are so undesirable in keys. Ironically, it is usually the FOTM re-rollers who usually end up dying the most, failing mechanics and doing the least damage. BM hunters, Havoc DH's, Aug evokers and Rogues have been bottling my keys this season xD (also Ret is actually really freaking powerful in M+)

I did keys very casually since I started playing, doing weekly 20s for vault and stuff like that. However I always wanted to try and improve at m+. What jump started me was meeting someone that was really high rated that thought I was good and really helped jumpstart my season. Through a lot of hardwork and dedication I managed to get rank 1 title, and was actually like 80 rating above cutoff. A lot of the information in this video was very applicable to my journey through the season and I hope the people watching this don't just brush off this information with the thought of "oh I can't get into high keys now so this is useless information." With enough hard work you can easily do high keys and the things Tettles is saying in this video is going to be very relevant to you if you decide to push yourself to improve. I also can't stress how important finding a consistent set of friends that want to key with you is, that was probably the biggest thing that helped me because at a certain point, there's barely any keys listed in LFG for the level you want to do it at.

Up until Mythic 23-25, you can finish keys NO PROBLEM with any spec, regardless of whether they're META or not. I played the other day with an Arms Warrior (currently on lower D-Tier) and then with an MM Hunter (also lower D-Tier)... and bro, they nuked the mobs AND the bosses! And I think it was a +20 Everbloom and +19 Blackrook Hold
And yes, META DOES matter, but not as much as you'd think (from my experience at least). Like, you can be a Havoc DH, Assa or Outlaw Rogue and still wait like half an hour until you get accepted into keys (even assuming you have the right Rating, like 2k+ rating)... so don't think like "okay, I play a META spec, so that means that I'll 100% get taken into keys within a second" - it's not gonna happen, unfortunately.

If you have the highest io or near the highest io anyone's seen apply to their key and a good ilvl you'll likely get insta invited assuming they want/need your spec and aren't leaving an extra spot open for tank+dps or healer+dps pairs. 2900 is a great io to have right now but it's about average for enthusiastic pug pushers. The meta does NOT matter if you want to do mythic+. Any class and spec can do keys just fine. Yes, some have it easier then others on paper, but being comfortable with your class and spec is much more important then being a meta re roller.
Now, if you want to do it at the super high end then yeah it matters more, but most of the player base is not doing it at the high end.
Finding friends and networking has helped me out a lot. Doesn't have to be the same core 5 people. Even if it's just 1 or 2 people, that will carry a lot

Numerically I agree with you, also I can get invites on any tank to a ±20 since I can link them the last 5 titles, and my main RIO score is always Linked on my alts.
For the average person... ehmm no. You might be able to numerically do a form of content even at non competitive keys, but you will sit in queue for much longer, making the game less fun.
I understand what all of you are trying to say you dont need to meta slave for 20s, hell you dont need to meta slave for even 25-29 keys if ppl are pushing 30s, buuut you wont be invited.
If you are premading playing whatever, if you wanna enjoy the PUG life go meta. Sorry, this applies to anyone at any skill level who wants to play and enjoy M+.

However, after you watch some dungeon guides, use MDT to plan your route, learn when to LoS pull, and most important is knowing how big you can pull before getting deleted all comes in time. I used to be so nervous to queue up for a key, that feeling does go away - trust me! Now I find myself being like “wtf is this tank doing? Pull more!” When I do flip to my dps. It’s such an enjoyable role! You’re the leader, you control the run! It’s so rare that anyone says anything to me about my tanking, I silent run is a good run!

Organizing a consistent M+ group has significantly boosted my IO score, despite having only two DPS in my team. As the tank, the advantage of running with guildies is that they become familiar with my pull patterns. This synergy allows us to coordinate cooldowns seamlessly, and they can communicate their comfort level for pulling more mobs. Conversely, if I hear a distressed "fuck me" on Discord, I know to ease up a bit. We've reached a point where interrupt coordination and crowd control are second nature - everyone trusts that I'll handle the first interrupt on the orange cast.
This coordinated effort has greatly diminished the anxiety associated with tackling high-level keys alone. Now, it feels like a collective endeavor, leading to a surge in the number of keys I complete (already surpassing 100 this season.) The camaraderie makes attempting daring strategies more enjoyable. For instance, in a recent run through Everbloom, I pulled four packs at the start, only to discover nope, my limit is three. Despite the wipe, the team didn't hold it against me, and we still successfully timed the key.
While I haven't recorded gameplay yet, the idea has crossed my mind. Reflecting on dungeons through logs and discussions has become a valuable practice. Analyzing failures and seeking improvement suggestions from teammates has expanded my knowledge, especially regarding the challenges DPS and healers face during certain boss encounters and trash packs. This provides insights into aspects of the game that I, as a tank, wouldn't have been aware of otherwise.

The meta matters, but not in the way most people think. What matters is player skill. Even at the highest levels of play, the disparity between the tip and those running keys at 1-2 levels lower is very large. Much larger than what specializations provide in power. The best way to improve is to play a lot of keys and gaining a comfort-level given the particular dungeon and specialization you've picked. That's why the meta can matter, because people pick the meta, even where it doesn't really matter that much. It provides a positive feedback loop of getting to play more in more diverse networks, which feed into dungeon knowledge and skill.
Once you get more than 1-2 key levels from the tip, player skill dominates specializations and more than offsets it. Most of them happen to be playing the meta, for obvious reasons, but if you forced them to play different specializations, they would do about the same. You just have to look at a single heavy-handed nerf to a key specialization in the top play. One finger-snap later, and the composition is already adapted to the new state of affairs. There's some indication the same will happen this season, where VDH is swapped for ProtPal or Guardian Druid.

    • @Defenestrationed
      @Defenestrationed Рік тому +2

I'm going to point out that your first point wasn't true last season. The "god comp" was just straight clearing keys 2 levels higher than was possible before the patch. It eventually got to the point where it wasn't as big of a difference, of course, I'm just saying that it is possible that the meta comp is clearly more powerful than anything else even factoring in player skill.
Does this matter to a new player thinking they want to get to +20 for the first time? No - but to be honest what you're saying doesn't either. All Tettles is saying is that you will be able to play more and improve more if you play meta. If you are new all specs are capable of doing the content you would be interested in but that doesn't mean that the rest of the experience (finding groups) will be good or fun.
I also know there's discourse about how groups requiring meta for a +16 are bad and how they'd invite a 2k person of a bad spec over a 1k person of a good spec or whatever... which is true but if you are a new player you're going to want every possible advantage to be as attractive as possible to groups.
Note all of this is for DPS. Meta matters less for tanks / healers at lower levels where groups are more willing to invite whatever to get going but at higher levels will face similar pressures to DPS.

#6 If you absolutely want to play solo, play tank or healer.
Even being a CE raider and timing keys up 23s currently I still have difficulty being invited to even 18s as DPS just because you are competing against so many other players for those spots. I queued over 50 dungeons before an invite but swapped to healer or tank with no keys done as heals this season and instant invites. I’m also an experienced healer and tank so I know not everyone can just do that immediately but if time efficiency and playing solo is important to you it’s worth considering tanking or healing.
Oh and yes know a lot of people who complain suck and don’t know they suck but it’s still an important message to people struggling to get into groups for any reason.

A healer... honestly they probably don't need to play other roles to know that people should be taking less damage.

This is an excellent video. I’d like to add tho. The thing about meta is, it doesn’t matter. The only reason it matters is for group invites/queues and not being invited to keys because of spec, and the top 1% of players who numerically are pushing such high keys it’s only possible with meta specs. Which is ultimately blizzards poor balancing.
I’ve said many times, I’d take a consistent / dedicated SV hunter over some reroller with an overinflated score because he switched to fotm every time.
With that point made tho, specs that are in Dire Shit and who numerically can’t keep up, (even if the player is incredible at playing the spec and there was nothing more they could do to improve really) is a blizzard problem, but it sure as hell does not help everyone listing 15-20s requiring certain specs because they saw it in the MDI.

In the moment you might feel there was nothing you could have done or things dont add up but as you slow ot down and see it unfold you can identify how it went wrong and how you can prevent it from happening or even just understanding how you can be equipped to counter the problems if and when they come up.

I just got into M+ and I'm having a blast as a solo player. However its pretty apparent that players want meta picks the higher the keys go - waiting upwards to 30+ minutes to get invited as an off meta class. I'm primarily a PVP player and the biggest thing for me improving is never about worrying about what the other players are doing and focusing on what you're doing and how you're benefitting your group or what you could have done better in each dungeon. 100% agree with reviewing your own VODS if you truly want to get better. It's easy to get caught up and say " the healer isn't healing me?!/the tank is in the wrong position!!1/ the dps isn't doing the mechanic properly!" - while all that may be true and be the cause of you failing your key. Who cares? Go again, out of your control. As long as you performed as best you could in the circumstances is all that matters. GGS!

However, I do understand wanting meta players. Unless you are playing at a high level it doesn’t matter but also playing at a high level in pugs SUCKS it’s just better to get a group you know and can communicate with. Since you can only bring 5 people, the class becomes increasingly important for stops, possible damage, and survivability. Preferably, you bring the player who happens to be on the best class.

Very good points, but I think for #1 I don't entirely agree.
The meta matters, sure. But, it is also a bit worrying to make it into a huge point, because people are not looking at statistics or information, but instead rely on the perception of the meta without understanding WHY. That's why it's difficult to get into pug groups as a non-meta spec unless you have way more rating/gear than everyone else. Which is very hard to do, if you're not the black and white 5 classes which are the best.
It's the exact same thing as group ratios for pug raids. People just take something that they've seen someone else do, and not understanding why try to copy it.
It's dumb, and it makes the game way less interesting and fun than it could be if people were actually thinking for themselves. The very lack of thinking reduces all of your other points to "are they meta class, if not we will not time key".
Unfortunately people aren't designed to be good at thinking. We are very good at coming up with shortcuts, boxes and other "thinking tools" in order to avoid thinking, because it costs a lot of energy to do so. And thus it's hard to do.
Great points though about how to improve, and I will definitely look at my own play differently after this, so this was very much appreciated 🙏

I disagree about not playing for score. For some people that is a goal, but in pugs it'll get you in more groups than not. You should work on your rating to show you know all the dungeons well and can play them. A good example....look at people with 2200-2500 rating putting up 20s; no one joins their group because they see a low score and not many 20s timed. Score does matter in pugs.

Just playing the game will help much more. Suggesting to new players that spending half their available time watching their own gameplay is kinda toxic, not everyone is a content creator and has that kind of time to put into a game that they play maybe a few hours a week. I feel like this pretty valid advise if you are one of those players who are pushing for titles, but only in the 20-30 range.

Meta is often referred to as "Most Efficient/Effective Tactic(s) Avaliable" even tho it is not proven that it is the actual pronouncination. "Meta" basically means, playing the comp/specc/class that is valued as "best" right now. Its based of optimizing time/value/effiencency when it comes to clearing certain objectives in games. In terms of M+ it means u play a certain specc-compilation to be as effective and smooth as possible in ur runs. These values are based off of the talents and buffs, certain classes bring to the table, but also survivability or flat dmg output are important for effective highkey runs. U might wanna check out MDI, a tournament hosted by blizzard, where the best of the best absoluty destroy high M+ keys due to their individual skill but also "meta-comps"
