Sonic's dialogue to Merlina at the end of Sonic and the Black Knight is not only well written, perfectly representative of his character, and delivered fantastically, but it's also a fantastic rendition of that quote from the Japanese Sonic 2 cover: "Don't sit there and waste your precious time. When you want to do something, do it right away. Do it when you can. It's the only way to live a life without regrets."
"Dark Age" Sonic has been my favorite Sonic since Unleashed. Unleashed is my favorite Sonic game, night stages included, but his character in both Unleashed and the Story Book games are my favorite interpretation of him because he feels like a slightly older Sonic who's still the same fun guy but matured enough to make his other emotions known.
YESSS i completely agree. IMO Griffith is my favorite sonic VA. He perfectly captures what sonic is all about. Hes not afraid to make sonic serious when he needs to be. When i got sonic colors and heard his voice change i hated it. Not to knock Roger or anything, hes a great voice but it doesnt fit sonic. They made sonic into someone who only speaks in quips one liners or jokes.
Vicious0 best interpretation because it doesn’t dated like Ryan drummond (still my fav though) or as tryhard funny as Craig smith (who mind you is a good voice actor but his sonic ain’t it.)
The Japanese version of Classic Sonic seems a bit more tame and insightful like Adventure-Black Knight Sonic. The Japanese Boxart even had some profound quotes that gave similar insight on his outlook on life.
Sonic And The Black Knight is peak shounen Sonic. Sonic Adventure 2 is peak punk Sonic. Sonic Boom (TV) is peak comedic Sonic. Sonic CD is peak silent Sonic. Overall, all era's of sonic bring something to the table. But at his heart, he's supposed to be a personification of the freedom, wildness, beauty of nature. To represent that you gotta keep running forwards to your next adventure, never looking back, bc life is short! And that's why Black Knight nails him the best.
5:06 hard disagree. I think Japanese is the best version of the character hands down. I whole reason I like Jason Griffith as Sonic, is because he’s been the only American actor to ever convey the very laid back version of the character, just as Japan portrays him
8:20 that’s an unfair argument. Sonic in Unleashed has other motives for going after Eggman but he’s definitely also doing it because Eggman is bad and it’s his job to save him; the whole game starts with him already fighting Eggman with no personal motivation before he becomes a werewolf or meets Chip. You also slide past SA1, Heroes and Shadow, all games in which Sonic goes after Eggman (or aliens) purely to stop them from doing evil/protecting people... hell even in the classic trilogy there’s little explanation for what Sonic does beyond saving the islands and stopping Eggman because he’s evil I hate the Meta era as much as the next guy but that’s a weird, contradictory reason to throw shade at it
That’s basically what I said in my comment! I explained it differently though saying that Meta Sonic also had purpose going out and doing his job like saving the flickies in Sonic Lost World.
4:40 that's how he is in Sonic Adventure. He subtly gets annoyed at Tails and makes fun of Knuckles. Sonic was only obsessed with friendship in Sonic Heroes
My head canon is that Sonic was more affected by Shadow's "death" at the end of SA2 than he lets on, and that trauma manifested as an obsession to fight together with his friends. He didn't want anyone else to sacrifice themselves so he insisted on team work.
About Sonic from X. Actually, he is a perfect capture of character described in JP manuals. He is free spirited, doesn't give a heck about authority, and such stuff
I love how you give the whole opinion warning at the beginning, only for your “pick” to not even be a version of Sonic you talked about in the video. *What a legend.*
IDW Sonic is honestly what I hate about Meta-Sonic thrown out the window. I would recommend reading it. He’s not only “just a guy who loves adventure” but he also has a serious and true heart when things get dire and serious like in the Metal Virus arc.
Here's how I look at him in the games. During the megadrive era Sonic was new to the world, mainly stuck to places familiar and close to South Island. He's a bit prideful, and kind of a loner during this time because he doesn't have many friends similar to him yet (*Game journalist squeals for some reason*). In the Adventure era he's like a naive teenager, ready for Adventure. He visits human cities with species unfamiliar to what he's use to back home, and interacts with new characters he wouldn't meet had he stayed close to home. His personality and the societies he's interacting with can clash at times, making him and his actions a little controversial in how he handles things. And having friends that he's known for a while, he engages a bit more in social aspects making him less of a loner (*game journalist froths at the mouth with anger*). Then from 2005 - 2009, he begins to mature. He understands human societies a little better now, and doesn't intentionally stir up trouble for himself with reckless actions, he's calmed down a bit. And he knows how to interact and deal with strangers a little better now, but can still sometimes find himself becoming hot headed. He tries to understand others a lot more, while also trying to sympathize with them (he had moments like this in the adventure games as well, but it was more prominent in this era specifically). All these 3 eras while having differing aspects that make them not the EXACT same, feels unified to the point where it just feels like Sonic at different points in his life. He still follows what he believes in for his own reasons, even if everyone looks down at him or tells him he's a fool. He frees himself of the shackles most people live with in their lives, and that can inspire others (just look at Tails). The 2010s era is like an alternate 'if' timeline for the Sonic you saw in those 90s Saturday Morning cartoon shows. This is going to sound cynical, but it feels like he's going through a midlife crisis, feels lost, doesn't understand what he should do with his life, and tries to be cool with the kids by shouting MEMES at the screen. Wants to relive the glory days so bad, that he throw away his future in favour of clinging to what he remembers his childhood as...even if it's just the surface level aspects (Green Hill, Generic looptie loops, 2D 2D 2D 2D!) . Basically suffering from symptoms you see from people who want to please others so badly and make them happy, at the expense of their own personal mental health. When they think it's working they go all the way with it, then when those same people get bored with them, well...I guess they regret what they've just done and become even more depressed. Essay finished.
Come on, we all know what the best version of Sonic is: The one with the scarf and bandages. (All Jokes Aside, Sonic Boom isn’t the best, but I think it’s still good.)
Good first video, it was entertaining and got points across well in a concise way. I like to think Sonic 1 to Black Knight is the same Sonic since he does seem to grow up and mature as the video explains. My favorite head cannon is that Sonics eyes went from black to green because of his exposure to Chaos Energy. Which the transition happened right after the game where he used the Super Emerald and went Hyper. Knuckles, Tails, and Amy's eyes changed for similar a reason.
1:24 I really have no clue what kind of Sonic fan I am as I was born in 2011, but I grew up with the classics and like most Sonic games. I do think that Sonic games did get worse starting with colors. I do like Mania and Generations though. I don’t know why but I don’t like Frontiers that much, it’s not horrible but definitely doesn’t make it in my top ten Sonic games. I also think that Superstars is ok, but I would’ve preferred a game closer to the style of Mania. My favorite Sonic games are Sonic 2 and SA2. Edit: Also by grew up I mean I started playing them around the age of 5.
The more mature sonic from the mid to late 2000s is my favorite sonic. Hes cocky but is more mature than his adventure counterpart which shows his character development. Hes great.
I have problem with what you say of Sonic lost world's Sonic stopping eggman just because bad guy using SA2 and Unleashed's plot as examples.. And that's because that examples are minority, Sonic will mostly stop eggman, not only for adventure but because his sense of justice, freedom, and golden heart, obviously would not let eggman do his things, the very classic Sonic games he doesn't have more reason than to free the animals eggman is capturing. Adventure 1 sonic and heroes sonic also don't have enough reason more than doing the good. Even in unleashed at the start, Sonic is fighting eggman just to stop him, rather than having any personal reason to it. So in lost world this is the case too, he starts to fight eggman again just because he once again wants to free the animals from eggman, which should be more obvious with the opening cutscene and the fact saving animals it's an actual mechanic this time.
I agreed with a lot of this episode and Meta Sonic does have issues however one part of the video was wrong that bugged me. The person in this video claimed that in Sonic Lost World Sonic just only went after Eggman because he’s a bad guy and it’s supposed to be his job yet it’s so far from the truth. Sonic went after Eggman because Eggman was stealing the flickies and he was trying to save them alongside Tails and got caught up in the adventure. Heck even in Sonic Generations he had the purpose to save his friends and in Sonic Forces he knew that his friends were in trouble but he got captured by Eggman and then Eggman took over. The only game that I could think about where Sonic went after Eggman because he’s a bad guy is honestly Sonic Colors. He and Tails followed Eggman and got to his amusement park because they knew him well enough to know that he was up to no good but then they got introduced to the Wisps and that’s when they had more of a purpose to stop Eggman. I also feel like Meta Sonic has shown in so many instances that he loves helping people and it’s not just an obligation. Although he does admit to Classic Sonic in Sonic Generations that defeating Eggman is like a job or something but it still stands he does it to help others. When something happens constantly in someone’s life and someone takes it as their full responsibility upon their own heart of course it becomes like a job can anyone blame Meta Sonic for saying that? At the same exact time can anyone blame Sonic for wanting to go after Eggman because he’s Eggman? He’s done that so many times in the past with Eggman that he’s a wise enough hero to know that Eggman is always up to no good. Meta Sonic has issues but at times he does need to be cut some serious slack from others and the way Splash Dash claimed that Meta Sonic just goes after Eggman because he’s Eggman sounded very biased to be honest, no offense.
To those of you who are asking who this person is and how they ended up in your sub box... The person behind this is Turkey Tom obviously. Wait you want me to answer how he got in your sub box, well watch Rick and Morty to be intelligent enough to know yourself.
Japanese Classic Sonic is my personal favorite by far, and I don’t blame people for bringing him back with games like Sonic Mania to the point of ditching his American counterpart entirely, besides some references and occasional characters. Th American version is alright, but the Japanese art looks so good and the story/characters make more sense, which seems right anyways since that version of him is the original in its purest form. Sonic Origins helps reinforce my opinion further with that as well.
I thought Unleashed and Black Knight did a really good job with Sonic's character without just being "teen angst" or "hee hoo stupid joke every 5 seconds". On an unrelated note, I think Sonic and the Black Knight is underrated. There, I said it.
It's like trying to decide the definitive ice cream flavor. Each has its owb unique spin on it so just.... eat your ice cream. ... that said, really like the cd/mania look for 2d, a nice compromise between the cool and cutesy look. But i also have to give the live Ben Swartz design some respect. It really did a great jpb bringing the character to the real world without making him to jarring. These two designs just felt like really good compromises
Nintendo - here's how Mario shall work in 3D for all eternity. Sega - is this how we do it? No wait, let me try again, how about this. One more time. And again. Fuck it, let's just get a fan to remake the 16 bit ones.
Same here. I just find sonic's current design way too... long. Especially his spines. It's really awkward looking and combined with his lanky body makes him look pretty weak honestly. The fact that he looks like a smooth plastic toy doesn't help the spines either. They just look like gross, big, long tubes that are attached to sonic's skull. Yeah no thanks. I have no other complaints about the design though, I couldn't care less that his eyes are green or that he doesn't have a round belly. I just wish they'd get the proportions right. Keep in mind I wasn't born yet during the "classic era", my first sonic games were sonic heroes, shadow the hedgehog and ultimate flash sonic, and I watched sonic x and modern sonic fan animations when i was little. So nobody can accuse me of being nostalgia blinded. i just think modern sonic looks weird lol
My personal favorite sonic is Classic. I just prefer him because of his design. But I admit, since playing Generations recently, I think I'm starting to like Modern. I mean heck, I grew up with Sonic X, and even then, I still liked him. So I'm open to trying new things.
I think both are good in their own ways. I personally prefer Classic Sonic (grew up with Modern Sonic so no nostalgic bias) but I also really like modern (also nice Walten Files pfp, love that series especially since the new one is coming soon)
Modern Sonic's games such as SA1/2, Unleashed, Riders and Black Knight really helps exemplify his character. Which only makes the meta era that more disappointing in comparison.
The ending makes me think that Splash Dash was just really pissed because of Cybersell constantly disappearing, so he decided to take the matter into his own hands.
I recommend using the original japanese stories of the sonic games and not english ones i understand you maybe dont know japanese and that is why you dont use them but windii has translated lot of the japanese cutscenes. (unfortunately most of her videos were deleted but there are some repost i have made a playlist of most of the reposts on my channel.) but other than that good video. There are also a few retranslated mods you can use. And the voice acting is just way better.
IMO my opinion on Sonics character is that I think that sonic should merge the classic sonic design with the voice acting. I think he is a fun loving relaxed dude who when push comes to shove saves the day because he wants to go back to maxing, relaxing and doing extreme sports. He doesn't honestly care too much about robotnik, that's why he calls him egg man. Because he cant actually be bothered to remember his real name and it it infuriates the mad dr, making it funnier. Much like spiderman he is a fast talking mocker, who insults you and your plan while kicking the shit out fo you.
In my opinion, the perfect sonic would be unleashed sonic but with a bit more energy. The best sonic voice actor was Jason but the most sonicy (yes that’s a word now) voice was Ryan’s. Get one of them back and I’ll be happy!
I always liked Classic Sonic the best; perhaps it's because I played those games the most. The most I've seen of modern sonic is Sonic X, Adventure DX, Secret Rings, Heroes, and Shadow the Hedgehog.

... that said, really like the cd/mania look for 2d, a nice compromise between the cool and cutesy look.
But i also have to give the live Ben Swartz design some respect. It really did a great jpb bringing the character to the real world without making him to jarring.
These two designs just felt like really good compromises
Cd sonic is best sonic

A quote from Lamar from GTAV:
"He gets on my nerves too but that's part of the nigga charm man."
"Let's move on to DIC sonic"
That randomly got me
Nintendo - here's how Mario shall work in 3D for all eternity.
Sega - is this how we do it? No wait, let me try again, how about this. One more time. And again. Fuck it, let's just get a fan to remake the 16 bit ones.

What The Main 4 Versions Of Sonic Looked Like On Their 1st Appearance
The only thing he needs are
C H I L I D O G S A N D S O A P S H O E S
3:40 WHAT THE FUDGE LMFAO
Well that ending aged poorly
What do you mean?
Also Roger Craig Smith was an amazing voice actor.
@Foty829 oooooooh THAT ending. Whoops.
@@sackydzNG i didnt like his modern sonic .
@@sackydzNG He is a great voice actor...for characters who aren't Sonic the Hedgehog.
I wasn’t even alive or played classic sonic games , I grew up more with modern sonic , but I think classic sonic is the best to me
@@atomcrusher1236 I don’t think he’s weird I just think he’s too plain and boring, we need a more expressive sonic

im an addict for quality sonic content and this guy is my new plug
I wouldn't be suprised if Cybershell only came back because Mark said he wouldn't leave like CS did.
That Cybershell joke at the end killed me.
My personal fav sonic is the adventure and the cd or mania cutscene one
Edit: in my opinion every sonic is cool ngl
(Even the American box art one)
I'm late but I've now seen all 5 of your videos and I love you. Please don't abandon us like the legendary Cybershell.
May our Lord return one day.
Me after hearing Sonics look on life.
Amen brother, Amen.
1:57 the best quote from this channel
I liked story book sonic he had the best personality and character design.
2:02 never thought I'd see that (chocolate pudding) ad, good times (and tasty too).
I'm just sad you didn't even mention 1999 OVA Sonic. "STRANGE, isn't it?!"
How has it already been a year
The ending makes me think that Splash Dash was just really pissed because of Cybersell constantly disappearing, so he decided to take the matter into his own hands.
My favorite sonic is adventure 2 sonic he was cool as hell.
The most important trait Sonic needs to have in my opinion is being a free spirit and always moving forward
1. Modern sonic 2. Classic sonic 3. 06 sonic 4. Dreamcast sonic 5. Movie sonic 6. Dic sonic 7. Boom sonic
lmao at the cybershell joke, i even found out you had a sonic channel through his new stuff
Answer: Black Knight Sonic, and SA2 Sonic
IMO my opinion on Sonics character is that I think that sonic should merge the classic sonic design with the voice acting. I think he is a fun loving relaxed dude who when push comes to shove saves the day because he wants to go back to maxing, relaxing and doing extreme sports. He doesn't honestly care too much about robotnik, that's why he calls him egg man. Because he cant actually be bothered to remember his real name and it it infuriates the mad dr, making it funnier. Much like spiderman he is a fast talking mocker, who insults you and your plan while kicking the shit out fo you.
So nobody gonna talk about that sync 0:59
the music between the sections of the video killed me
May I ask what was wrong with Sonic Underground?
Bruh what a cliffhanger, 06-unleashed sonic is the best
marlo is better than segway
The description gave me dark generations flashbacks
9:06 you can tell this was built up anger that was released
Wow, was watching this video and didn't even notice it was the first due to quality.
For me the Adventure Era Sonic will always be the best.
WATCH OUT YOU’RE GONNA CRASH, A A H.
Sonic needs to have an heart of gold, but he should melt many rings
In my opinion, the perfect sonic would be unleashed sonic but with a bit more energy. The best sonic voice actor was Jason but the most sonicy (yes that’s a word now) voice was Ryan’s. Get one of them back and I’ll be happy!
I’m not even joking sonic man could possibly be the best sonic ever.
How did you forget about the #1 best sonic ever, Balloon Sonic?
Well that cybershell joke didnt age well
I always liked Classic Sonic the best; perhaps it's because I played those games the most. The most I've seen of modern sonic is Sonic X, Adventure DX, Secret Rings, Heroes, and Shadow the Hedgehog.
8:57 Tails’ face had me dying
What about OVA Sonic?
"Well your pick doesn't agree with mine. I personally think Underground Sonic is the best".
my favorite sonic is low-poly sega saturn sonic
