Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with going to the food bank. I often struggle with feeling embarrassed standing in line waiting for the food pantry. My husband and I are newlyweds living off one income. So we have to go at least once a month. Videos like this help with my shame because I know I'm not alone❤️
I try to take advantage of the food banks/pantries in my area to help my SNAP benefits go further. There is usually some things in what I get that I don't use. I don't let it go to waste, though. There are some people in my area that do enjoy what I am able to pass along to them. That's what I feel it's all about - passing the help along, not wasting what you have been blessed with.
I use what I can, and pass along what I can't. I love the little free pantries/ blessing boxes set up around, so I tend to put things in it we can't use.
I share with a friend who works irregular days, whenever she can find a few hours here & there, as well as for myself. There are a lot of retired seniors, as well as single moms, that use them too!!
God bless you, your little girl, and your new baby on the way. . the food bank is for ANYONE in need, sweetie, do not feel you owe anyone an explanation nor feel guilty in an way. You need to feed your baby girl AND YOU and that little baby growing inside of you!! Good for you, hun!! I admire the hard work you do AND all of the 🌈struggles you face, but still push forward. 💖💖💖
I loved volunteering in the foodbank. We made sure all the expected people received a big box of fresh fruit and veg, bread, milk, tinned goods as well as chicken or fish and other items available depending on household size. Unregistered people were assessed and then given some food to take home. Homeless people were given sandwiches, a drink and takeaway meals which were cooked by one volunteer - usually lentils/vegetables and rice. We had some donated clothes too which were taken by those in need i.e. mothers would try coats on their children then keep them. Good place to volunteer.❤
I agree. It doesn't matter how much you make. Poor, broke, middle and higher. We all trying to survive. No one is better then anyone. The only real high is God. Bless all. Remember you give bad energy it comes back and you give good energy its the same. You choice one and choice wisely.
Barley is good in a beef & barley soup. It puffs up a lot and takes longer to cook than you think. If it says 30 min it will take a good 45. The good thing about beef & barley soup is, you don’t need much beef. You can get one of those thin fast fry steaks for a couple bucks , cut it very thin , and cook it. Then add water, beef oxo , barley, potatoes , carrot , you can also add mushroom , green beans etc. It’s yummy and great for fall.
Hi Vanessa, suggestion, go to secondhand store and find a good general cookbook, like Good Housekeeping or Betty Crocker, you will find a use for all of your unfamiliar foods.
Pearl barley is amazing in vegetable soup. Carrot, onion, celery, potato, stock (any kind but bacon is amazing) and pearl barley. It really is a meal and so good with buttered bread.
Yasss boo, these places are Heaven Sent. I also showed my local food pantry and scored hundreds of dollars of groceries. Keep using it luv, that is what it's there for.
For the kidney beans you can leave them overnight soak in water so they will be more tender and will take less time to cook. Also there is something I do, is to dice and freeze if not all my vegetables a part of them so they last longer.
I’m so happy to see families getting the help they need by using their local food bank. As a community we should donate or help to raise money and items for our local food banks and then if we ever need to use them they are there for everyone.
Hi Venessa! I agree… the food bank is available for everyone that needs a bit of help. It’s a great resource. Also, unsolicited advice …😂 You may want to wait for a bit to potty train Penelope. I did potty train my daughter a few months before my second baby was born and she totally regressed. Ended up doing it again once the new baby was about 5 months. Anyway, just my experience. Much love ! Karen🥰
Pinterest is such a good resource for recipes! I cook from scratch so those dried beans are staples in our house. Slow cooker on low for 4-6 hrs if you have one. Soak beans overnight. Also if you can, replace water with chicken or vegetable stock for more flavor!
Hey there! Thank you for posting this video and kudos to you for going to the Food Bank for your little one. Sometimes we just need a little help along the way and that is a-ok!
We've used 2 different food banks in our area, a few times. Before we got EBT it was a struggle! Food is so expensive 😢 I never got diapers or wipes though so you are blessed! The only thing that wasn't fun was waiting in like for 3-4 hours. The best one in our area isn't exactly a well kept secret so A LOT of people go. It was always worth it! They would give several boxes of food.
I feel very fortunate to never have needed a food bank ( but my parents did). I help 2 single moms- they use a food bank, but I supplement them with things they may need- usually fruits and veg. They don’t take advantage ( been there, done that). I think if everyone that can afford to “adopted” a family, we’d be a better society.
Here in the UK food banks are a god send for people. I personally/luckily haven't needed to use one but absolutely everyone supports food banks here in the UK and no one is made to feel ashamed for using one. If you need to use one then use one, no shame in that. If i needed to I 100% would.
Take a cup or so of the dried beans. Cover with water, bring to a boil, turn then off and let them sit for an hour. Drain. Refill with water. Add onion, garlic, bell pepper, some diced raw bacon or link sausage, if you have it, and bring to a boil, then simmer for a few hours. Serve over rice.
We love beans in our house but can't eat much of them because of side effects. We have tried soaking them overnight, beano etc... will this method help with issues? I screenshot your message I'm going to try it this way.😊
@@esteeb42it does help to get the gases out of the beans . Make sure you rinse them well . I put mine in the instant pot for 15 minutes then I rinse them well then I cook them . Hope this helps , either way you do it ❤
We love pinto beans. Cover with water and some baking soda.Rinse after a few hours and repeat. The baking soda and rinsing helps with gas.Put in a crackpot with some onion, bacon and garlic salt.Cook all day. Serve over rice and add salsa or hot sauce if desired.
In my opinion a food pantry is a form of a village. Food and clothes that would normally go to wate is being used and not thrown away. I always donate my kids old clothes as long they are in good condition. What sense does it make to throw away good clothes when someone else can use them after me. Same with food.
I was a single mom of 3 little girls. In my younger years I used the food bank. Now I’m 70 and financially stable, but I really appreciated the food bank when I needed it. 💖 Raising children is an important job. Best of luck to you for your future. You can put barley in soup.
We dont have expiry dates on foods except for sole sustenance foods like baby formula and liquid diet for feeding tube. They're best before dates and dont always mean much when stuff isn't handled properly at some point.
There should be no judgement on food banks or food assistance cards. If you need it you need it.times are hard for alot of folks and working does not always constitute having enough too buy food and pays as well.
First time seeing your video, it was great!! So glad there’s a place that people can get things they need. It’s so tough these days with high prices. But I bet there are many people that don’t either know about local food banks or if the are allowed to go.Ive never been to one but I think it’s awesome to have available to people. When I was in high school I volunteered & cooked at a local food pantry.I loved it!! I look forward to following your videos.
The beans you wash really well then soak them overnight and then cook them the next day. Easy recipe you could make is beans soup sort of like chili but if you don’t have meat then you could make it as chili. My kids like them straight from the can but there are a tons of ways to make them
Eat the custard like pudding, soak kidney beans 12 to 24 before cooking they are one of the hard beans that take forever, but then can be frozen and use in chilli. Peas and dumplings, soak, cook your peas in milk butter salt and pepper to all most tender then add drop dumplings on top if you like a dryer dumplings in middle let them cook 9 or ten minutes first before you add your lid, then add your lid cook low boil tem more minutes. Barley can be added to soup a 1/8 cup should work ,that's how I use it
no judgement here. I use one too. I could not get by if I didn't. I don't qualify for food stamps, I live on 900.00, too much for food stamps. I am retired. So I won't apologize. Other people are not living your life, bills. You do you. Hugs.
You can put the container of spinach in the freezer and take out what you need to put in eggs and other recipes. You can't use it in a salad once frozen though. I also voted for Penelope!
Have you ever considered making a big batch of different meals, reserving some for a meal or two or three to eat right away and freezing the rest in freezer bags? I don’t suffer from any mental health issues, so I’m honestly not sure if that gets in the way of energy, learning, growing etc, but I will usually make a big crockpot meal, reserve enough for about 2-3 meals, place the rest in freezer bags and label the. I want to get into canning as I’ve heard food tastes better canned, but freezer is good if it’s not left frozen more than a few months. This is for made meals, not things uncooked. Also, another thing I love making is homemade pies, like chicken or veggie or steak pot pies. You basically cook the filling, place it in a freezer aluminum pan, place the crust on top and freeze, then bake it as normal when ready to use. I get the smaller tins, 4x6 at Walmart and that gives my son and I two meals. This does save money, but it also gives a break if you want homemade food but don’t feel like cooking. I’ve also been making my own bread products for a year now. You can freeze them to keep fresh and bake once a week or once a month. Same with cookies. If you make a batch of cookie dough, place them on a pan as if you’re getting ready to bake, but place in the freezer instead. Once frozen, take out and place in a freezer bag and just pull out however many you want to bake. I have so much fun in the kitchen and learning about food. Nothing wrong with a food bank or help with food costs, but it also might help you so you can get foods you know you’ll use. I know when my son was 2 I was just learning how to make simple meals, some of what you got would have overwhelmed me at the time as I just wouldn’t have been ready for it. Like the dried beans, today I could handle them because I’ve gained experience over the last 6years, but just learning the basics of food, sometimes we need the canned beans in the beginning. Also, you could cook the beans, then mash them into refried beans and put them on tacos. Sorry, long comment. So many ideas. When I watch grocery hauls, especially of people who are learning how to cook, I just want to come help. 😂 my creativity goes wild and I’m like, this is so my jam. 😂
@@heyvanessamartin if you’re interested in learning about homemade food and how to learn about Whole Foods (I had no idea how little I knew about food until 6 years ago), I can give you a list of some UA-camrs to learn from. We have used the food bank numerous times over the years 😊 when you need resources use them and never feel bad, so many people are struggling right now. We are moving soon due to the economy, got ahold of cheap land so it's 5th wheel camper time for us😊
I love you already. Idk how you ended up on my feed but I’m so glad the internet gets it. ❤ sending so much love to you and your babies. You’re not alone. Things will get better. It’ll be ok. ❤
My local food banks have been a blessing, when we needed it ❤❤❤. My husband got laid off the first week of January. He just went back to work a month ago. If we didn’t have our local food bank, we would have starved. God bless❤❤❤.
The extra help is for you and anyone else who can use it, should. That is what the food banks are for. Food is very expensive. I dont see how anyone can afford to buy groceries. I buy my food from the weekly grocery adds. I stock on non perishable foods, healthy and beauty products, cleaners, paper goods and laundry supplies. I lost my job and it is challenging. Glad i did stock up on items when i was working and that has helped me out. Take of you and your family.
I’m retired and we go to a food bank every other month, ours is a drive through, that’s the way one of ours is set up , really helps out!!! Make soups with the barley, rice and vegetables!!
I was a single teenage mom and was on welfare for 4 years while I worked and attended college. I believe all people should utilize these services while working towards financial independence. It put dinner on the table many nights for us 🙏
Barley is delicious. I love to mix it with bolognese snd make stuffed peppers with cheese on top, or use in soups. It can be used to make risotto too, it’s so versatile but can be just a simple side as well, just like rice :) i always buy dry beans, they are healthier. You can soak them overnight and cook them in a pressure cooker or on the stove. Kidney beans are great for chili con carne. That’s a really great haul! As you know, there is no shame, most single parent in the GTA or many parts of Canada would struggle on a single income. I think many people don’t realize just how expensive rents and cost of owning a house have become in Canada and how our real estate market is different than in the US.
The kidney beans you can rinse and soak before you use them in say like bean soups, chili that sort of thing and pearl barley I have used in place of rice in say soups and even cabbage rolls! So good in cabbage rolls makes them so nice and moist, if you need the food bank don’t be shy sometimes people need help you shouldn’t be judged for it take care girl! Lots of love your way to you and your babies!
Barley: if you have the meat, beef barley or chicken beat soup is AWESOME. You can also make lemon barley water as a soft drink. Very refreshing and healthy even for your little one. Especially good when a person has come down with a flu bug or cold bug. Just search the internet, it's all over the place for that. You can also fix barley with rice; instead of doing a whole pan of rice, do half and half.
I'm happy you are utilizing the food bank. That is what it is there for. Pearl barley can be costly. I make a beef and barley soup with it. It is delicious and very nutritious. Great video! I'm still voting for Penelope!
Barley is great in soups and dishes. Kind of think of its purpose similar rice just thicker and different flavor. As for the dry beans there are easy ways to soften them in the crockpot if you don't have time to hang out at the stove. Once softened you can freeze them in portions for future meals.
If you can buy a chicken a few carrots you can turn it into a dinner, chicken salad, sandwich, soup, bone broth. Freeze in small portions for you and the kiddos. Been there. In the morning the stores mark meat down half price. You will eventually find the rhythm of how they do it but the meat might be the day before the sell by date. I saved 37.00 on my last bill . I purchased chicken breasts, hamburger and meaty ribs that provided many meals. ❤❤❤❤
Never mind the smart arsed comments . Let me make you feel better . I had---- 8--- children by the time i stopped having children . YOUR DOING FINE WITH 2 My family are close .We always help each other. No matter what you stay posative . AND MOM YOUR DOING A GREAT JOB TO KEEP YOUR FAMILY TOGETHER.
Barley you can make beef and Barley soup .Very good haul.Godbless to you and your family. I know times are very hard nothing wrong with using the food banks that is what they are there for.
The barley you can use it as a type of porridge, you boil it with a bit of sugar, lemon zest at the end, crushed wallnuts and a bit a cinnamon if you like
Vanessa my heart goes out to you I am so sorry that the father of your children does not want to pay child support my thoughts and prayers are with you 🙏❤️
The barley is for soups. I use it in beef soup and they gave you can tomato, dry kidney beans and dry peas so you need some chuck roast , potatoes, carrots ,onions, celery beef broth and there you go!
I used to give my kids warmed custard with banana for breakfast sometimes, they were not great breakfast eaters but always ate that, especially in the winter. Needs must sometimes right!

Yes absolutely!! Thank you so much for watching my video. Please don’t feel embarrassed. It’s a great resource ❤️❤️
Please don't feel shame. It's there for people that need help. God Bless you.
I use the foodbank. It helps out. No questions asked at my foodbank.
That’s great!! Totally helps and is a great resource for people.
Umm no stop having kids you can't afford
A little extra for you and the girls. ❤
Oh my!!!! Thank you so much!!!! This helps a ton ❤️❤️❤️

God bless you sweetheart that was extremely nice of you 🙏🏾❤️
I loved volunteering in the foodbank.
What a great variety! I’m happy you have this food bank option available to you!
This is how I look at Government funded programs...I've paid taxes all my life and if I need assistance for ANYTHING, I'd better GET IT!!!
I agree. It doesn't matter how much you make. Poor, broke, middle and higher. We all trying to survive. No one is better then anyone. The only real high is God. Bless all. Remember you give bad energy it comes back and you give good energy its the same. You choice one and choice wisely.
Use any service available to you!
Your job is to survive, be happy and take care of your little ones.
Good luck❤
Yes! Thank you! ❤️
That sounds super yummy! Thank you! ❤️❤️
Hi Vanessa, suggestion, go to secondhand store and find a good general cookbook, like Good Housekeeping or Betty Crocker, you will find a use for all of your unfamiliar foods.
Or use Google. Obviously access to the internet isn’t an issue.
I agree Anne. I know there's cooking channels on UA-cam, but it's nice to have book in hand. Have a beautiful Sunday 🌹
@@LauraMacMillan-el2kcbut the internet does go down and books are more fun or there are to me
Pearl barley is amazing in vegetable soup.
Carrot, onion, celery, potato, stock (any kind but bacon is amazing) and pearl barley. It really is a meal and so good with buttered bread.
That sounds so yummy! Thank you ❤️
Yasss boo, these places are Heaven Sent. I also showed my local food pantry and scored hundreds of dollars of groceries. Keep using it luv, that is what it's there for.
For the kidney beans you can leave them overnight soak in water so they will be more tender and will take less time to cook. Also there is something I do, is to dice and freeze if not all my vegetables a part of them so they last longer.
cream of mushroom you can make green bean casserole, barley IDK i think you can make porrage or soup
I’m so happy to see families getting the help they need by using their local food bank. As a community we should donate or help to raise money and items for our local food banks and then if we ever need to use them they are there for everyone.
Umm bo stop having babies you can't afford
Much love ! Karen🥰
Thanks for sharing!! Everyone is like do it now you will regret it!! And she’s showing all the signs of readiness too.
Pinterest is such a good resource for recipes! I cook from scratch so those dried beans are staples in our house. Slow cooker on low for 4-6 hrs if you have one. Soak beans overnight. Also if you can, replace water with chicken or vegetable stock for more flavor!
Great ideas! Thank you ❤️
That sounds yummy! Thank you! 😊
@@ColleenLind yes 🙌 pintos are the best !!! I’m in north Georgia so raised on pintos and cornbread and fried taters !!! 😜
You look to be a typical welfare recipient
First time seeing your video, it was great!! So glad there’s a place that people can get things they need. It’s so tough these days with high prices. But I bet there are many people that don’t either know about local food banks or if the are allowed to go.Ive never been to one but I think it’s awesome to have available to people. When I was in high school I volunteered & cooked at a local food pantry.I loved it!! I look forward to following your videos.
Ive been going to the food bank once a month, anything helps im so greatful and thankful ❤god bless you
The beans you wash really well then soak them overnight and then cook them the next day. Easy recipe you could make is beans soup sort of like chili but if you don’t have meat then you could make it as chili. My kids like them straight from the can but there are a tons of ways to make them
I think you should definitely go when you can. It sounds like the baby section is especially helpful.
Definitely!!
You do you. Hugs.
Thank you! ❤️
No judgement here girl! Go as much as you can and try to pay down on your debt ❤
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
You can put the container of spinach in the freezer and take out what you need to put in eggs and other recipes.
You are amazing!!! I could learn so much from you. Thank you so much for your tips I really appreciate it ❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@heyvanessamartin if you’re interested in learning about homemade food and how to learn about Whole Foods (I had no idea how little I knew about food until 6 years ago), I can give you a list of some UA-camrs to learn from. I know for me I used to think a sandwich was feeding my body. I lacked motivation until I started learning from others. If I ever decide to start my own channel, I’ll let you know.
Acre homestead is an excellent one to watch. Cook one day make 30 days of meals. Shes a sweet heart.@lisaerin85
@@JAYNEmM1962 I was going to suggest her to Vanessa as well. I was thinking farmhouse on Boone, but she’s pretty advanced for where Vanessa is. Acre homestead is more meal prep, great for beginners. Everyone else I watch is a bit advanced for someone beginning to learn. Vanessa, I think this would be a great channel for you to watch as her videos are long because she almost does a step by step meal prep with you as well as teaches.

Thank you so much 🥰
My local food banks have been a blessing, when we needed it ❤❤❤. My husband got laid off the first week of January. He just went back to work a month ago. If we didn’t have our local food bank, we would have starved. God bless❤❤❤.
Thank you! ❤️
Thank you! ❤️
Yes 100%!! Thank you for the great ideas! ❤️
I give to the foodbank, and I’m happy to see it is helping people like you. 💖
Girl
Do what you got to do the food bank is there for a reason! It’s tough and don’t ever feel bad using it!
Thank you! ❤️
Custard is good warmed up and put over cake or with tinned fruit or even just on its own! Pearl barley is good in soups and stews xx
I would never judge someone for having to go to a food bank. You never know when you could be in a situation that you would need to go to one!!!!
Thanks!! ❤️
You can also freeze spinach.
Great Haul! Dont worry about what other's think take care of your family!
Thank you 💗💗
I think you should take advantage of the food bank. Thats why it's there. We donate products all the time, Huggies and wipes. Thanks for sharing.
I agree! Thank you ❤️
Barley is great in soups and dishes.

Glad you like them! ❤️
Me too, I like the hauls :)
My church has a food bank. I love seeing those who need it, use it. Blessings to you and your children.
Thank you for making this video, many of us need help and are to afraid to admit it.. this brings me so much joy
Thanks for watching! ❤️❤️
Use pearl barley in stews and broths ,they swell and thicken it. A little goes a long way.Custard in for desserts ,try it warm with sliced banana 😋
I haven't seen a video from you in a few months and had no idea you had a new baby. Wish I g you all the best for you and your babies.
Oops! Just realised you haven't had the baby yet. Sorry.
Barley you can make beef and Barley soup .Very good haul.Godbless to you and your family. I know times are very hard nothing wrong with using the food banks that is what they are there for.
The barley you can use it as a type of porridge, you boil it with a bit of sugar, lemon zest at the end, crushed wallnuts and a bit a cinnamon if you like
Kidney beans you use for chili, barley is good in beef barley soup, peas in pea soup
Enjoy your videos. You are genuine and kind. ❤
Thank you so much! That means a lot! 🥰
Pearl Barley Beef soup. Ground beef onions, celery, beef broth and the barley,, add chopped potatoes and corn... yummy
I always cook my barley separately,no more than a 1/2 of cup since it swells so much. You can control the amount you add .
You can use barley as a substitute for rice😊 I think you can also make porridge and use it for baking😊
Vanessa my heart goes out to you I am so sorry that the father of your children does not want to pay child support my thoughts and prayers are with you 🙏❤️
Just found you today. Great haul. What a blessing
I visited a food bank too today.
The pearled barley can be used in place of rice or quinoa. Its packed with protein and fiber.
The dates are best but most non perishable are good months after the date
The barley is for soups. I use it in beef soup and they gave you can tomato, dry kidney beans and dry peas so you need some chuck roast , potatoes, carrots ,onions, celery beef broth and there you go!
I wish you the very BEST 💖
I used to give my kids warmed custard with banana for breakfast sometimes, they were not great breakfast eaters but always ate that, especially in the winter. Needs must sometimes right!
I’ve thrown some barley in the crockpot with a beef roast and peeled chunks of sweet potatoes, a little onion soup mix, delicious!
Sounds yummy!!
